Find where the connection is breaking before changing settings: check the encoder, your network, IBM Video Streaming ingest, and—only if YouTube is in the actual broadcast path—YouTube’s live diagnostics. A disconnect can come from any of these points; the title alone does not identify the cause. Record the time of the next interruption, then compare the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame indicators with the platform monitoring available to you.

First, identify which part of the stream is disconnecting

Trace the route your video actually takes. In one setup, an encoder sends to IBM Video Streaming and IBM handles the audience playback. In another, YouTube is also a destination—through a relay or a separate encoder output. Those setups need different checks. If YouTube is not in the broadcast path, YouTube diagnostics will not identify why the encoder lost its IBM connection.

  1. Note the time. Write down the start and end time of each disconnect, plus any encoder or platform error message. Use the same time zone throughout.
  2. Check the encoder first. Look at its connection status and dropped-frame indicators around that time. If the encoder itself reports a lost connection or rising dropped frames, investigate its workload and network before changing platform settings.
  3. Check IBM’s monitoring and network tests. IBM’s ECDN network test options include traceroute, ping, ingest and port-1935 connectivity, ECDN, FLOT, and broadcast tests. Use the results as clues across the route; no single test establishes every possible cause.
  4. Check YouTube only if it receives this stream. Compare the same time with YouTube’s live diagnostics. If IBM is the only destination, focus on the encoder-to-IBM path first.

Is your upload connection causing the dropped frames?

IBM recommends using wired Ethernet when possible and keeping the stream’s target bitrate at or below 50% of the available upload bandwidth. That margin helps leave room for normal variation in the connection; a speed reading by itself does not prove that an uplink is stable throughout a broadcast.

  • If you are on Wi-Fi, try a wired connection as a diagnostic. A Cat 6 cable is one possible cable choice, not an IBM requirement or guaranteed fix.
  • Avoid a congested or heavily shared connection when possible. If other traffic competes for upload capacity, pause it or test at a quieter time.
  • If frames drop or the stream stutters, reduce the bitrate or resolution and observe whether the connection stabilizes.
  • Compare the encoder’s dropped-frame indicators with the interruption time. A network test can help locate reachability or path issues, but it should be considered alongside encoder and platform evidence.

Does the encoder have enough processing headroom?

High-definition or high-bitrate encoding needs sufficient CPU or GPU resources. As a diagnostic, close other demanding work on the encoding computer and compare the encoder’s dropped-frame indicators during the next stream. If performance improves, reduce the encoding workload or bitrate to a level the machine can sustain.

IBM recommends lowering resolution or bitrate when dropped frames or stuttering occur. Do not increase resolution as a first response to a disconnect: higher settings can require more bandwidth and processing capacity without addressing a weak link.

Verify the IBM ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open the selected channel’s Broadcast Settings in IBM Video Streaming.
  2. Verify that the RTMP URL and stream key shown for that channel match the values configured in the third-party encoder. Check for accidental whitespace or a value copied from another channel.
  3. IBM supports RTMPS for secure ingest. If you choose it, make sure the encoder is configured with the corresponding secure ingest URL and key.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Someone with the URL and key may be able to publish to the channel. Avoid posting screenshots or logs that expose them.

IBM API documentation describes channel and temporary streaming keys. Do not assume that the API’s temporary-key behavior applies to every key shown in the dashboard; verify the key and its intended use in the workflow you actually configured.

Use an IBM-compatible encoding profile as a baseline

For most IBM cloud-transcoding applications, IBM’s documented starting point is one 720p input with the settings below. These are vendor recommendations, not a diagnosis of your specific disconnect. Match the source frame rate and avoid raising resolution unless the encoder and uplink can sustain it.

Setting IBM-recommended starting point
Resolution 1280 × 720
Video bitrate 1,200–4,000 kbps
Audio AAC-LC at 128 kbps
Audio sample rate 44.1 or 48 kHz
Frame rate 25 or 30 fps; match the source frame rate
Video codec/profile H.264 Main
Keyframe interval 1 second for this listed HD recommendation

Change one setting at a time and note the result. A lower bitrate or resolution may reduce load, but if the URL, key, firewall, or ingest path is wrong, changing the video profile will not fix that underlying issue.

Ask the network administrator to check firewall access

IBM’s EU-cluster guidance calls for outbound TCP port 1935 to IBM IP ranges for RTMP, with additional ports for secure ingest. The IP ranges and port requirements are cluster-specific: do not copy EU-cluster addresses into a different region’s firewall rules. Ask the administrator to confirm the cluster used by your account and apply the corresponding IBM guidance for that cluster.

If YouTube is in the path, check its diagnostics separately

Use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance to inspect encoder errors, codecs and audio, source feeds, and consistency between primary and backup frame rates. If YouTube receives a separate output from the encoder, check that output as well as the IBM connection; one destination can fail while another remains connected. If IBM is the only output, prioritize the encoder-to-IBM route rather than treating YouTube playback symptoms as proof of an IBM ingest fault.

Common symptoms and what to check next

What you observe Next checks
Encoder reports dropped frames or stuttering Test a wired connection, check upload capacity against the target bitrate, reduce bitrate or resolution, and compare encoder load.
Encoder reports it cannot connect to IBM ingest Verify the selected channel’s Broadcast Settings, RTMP or RTMPS URL, stream key, and firewall access for the account’s IBM cluster.
IBM appears to lose the broadcast, but the encoder stays connected Compare timestamps with IBM monitoring and network-test results; check IBM’s status page before changing unrelated encoder settings.
YouTube reports an error while IBM remains connected Check the YouTube output path and YouTube diagnostics. Determine whether YouTube receives an IBM relay or a separate encoder output.
Disconnects recur at different times without a clear encoder error Keep a timestamped log and compare encoder, network, IBM, and—if applicable—YouTube evidence. Send that record and screenshots to IBM support.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than diagnosing this IBM broadcast path, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative workflow for uploaded-video YouTube streaming, not a repair for an IBM encoder, network, or ingest problem. Start your free StreamNeo day.
