Create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key; configure the source and MediaLive workflow; then start the feed and verify YouTube’s incoming preview before beginning the broadcast. MediaLive transcodes and delivers the feed—it does not provide the content source or, by itself, guarantee that the whole chain stays available.
What you need for a continuous stream
A MediaLive workflow has three practical parts: an upstream source, a MediaLive input and channel, and a downstream output. AWS’s How MediaLive works documentation describes this ingest, processing, and delivery model. For a 24/7 broadcast, every part—and the network links and credentials connecting them—must remain usable for the duration.
- A continuous source: for example, a camera and production system, an always-on computer running an encoder such as OBS, or another live feed. The source must continue sending content; MediaLive does not create a program or loop an uploaded video on its own.
- A MediaLive input: the connection by which MediaLive receives the source, such as an RTMP push or pull workflow.
- A MediaLive channel and output: the processing configuration and delivery path to YouTube.
- A YouTube stream: its server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An availability and cost plan: including what happens if the source, network, channel, or YouTube connection fails, and how you will preserve the content if you need a complete recording.
Do you need OBS?
No. OBS is one possible upstream encoder when your source is on a computer; it is not a requirement for MediaLive. Use an encoder or feed that can supply the input type you configure and remain available for the broadcast. A camera may need a production system or encoder between it and MediaLive, depending on how it outputs video.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or load a previous one, then copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
- Enter those values in the MediaLive output configuration. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, code, or public configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before relying on it again.
- Keep Live Control Room available to check for an incoming preview after MediaLive starts delivering.
YouTube’s Help page, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, documents connecting an encoder with the stream URL and key. Channel-specific live-stream eligibility and current encoder requirements can change; check the current YouTube Studio guidance for the account you will use.

Create a MediaLive input
Choose the input method based on network reachability and which side should initiate the connection. RTMP push is common when the upstream encoder can connect outward to MediaLive; RTMP pull is an option when MediaLive can reach the source endpoint. Push is not mandatory for every design.
RTMP push
- In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, create an RTMP push input and associate an input security group.
- Configure that security group to allow the upstream source’s public egress IP address or addresses. Prefer a narrow allowlist of known addresses rather than broad access.
- Use the input destinations MediaLive generates in your AWS account. Do not substitute sample endpoints or IP addresses from a guide.
- Configure the source encoder to send to those destinations. A standard-class input has two destinations, and the source must send to both; a single-pipeline input has one.
AWS’s MediaLive User Guide, Create an RTMP push input, notes that the source must already be pushing when the channel starts. Include that dependency in your start procedure.

RTMP pull
For a pull workflow, configure the upstream RTMP source URL or URLs and any required credentials in the input. Confirm that MediaLive can reach the endpoint through the relevant network and firewall rules. Here the connection is initiated from MediaLive toward the source, so the network access and credential requirements differ from push.
Configure the channel and YouTube output
- Create a MediaLive channel and attach the input you created. Select the channel class—single-pipeline or standard—based on your availability requirements and whether you can supply the necessary independent paths.
- Add an output group that matches the YouTube ingest workflow you intend to use. AWS’s Public Sector walkthrough, Live streaming to Facebook and YouTube with AWS Elemental MediaLive, demonstrates an RTMP(S) output configured with a YouTube stream key. For a specialized 4K/HDR workflow, an AWS Media Blog article dated 2021-04-14 describes HLS ingest. That example is not the only route for ordinary streaming.
- Set video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence to match your source and the current YouTube ingest specification. The specific values depend on the intended format and current platform requirements; do not copy settings from an old or specialized example as universal defaults.
- Save and review the input, channel, output destinations, and stream key before starting. Limit access to the key and avoid including it in public logs or screenshots.
The AWS 2021 HLS article gives an example using 4K, 59.94 fps, and 20 Mbps. Those are example settings from that dated 4K/HDR workflow, not general current recommendations. Check current AWS console options and YouTube requirements for the output path you choose.

RTMP(S) or HLS?
Use the output path supported by your chosen YouTube workflow and the requirements of your video format. AWS’s older Public Sector tutorial shows RTMP(S); the 2021 AWS Media Blog article describes HLS for a specific 4K/HDR ingest setup. HLS can involve additional packaging and configuration decisions, so do not select it solely because a specialized guide used it. Verify that the protocol, codec, and packaging are currently supported for your account and destination.
Choose the right level of redundancy
AWS recommends two-pipeline processing for MediaLive resiliency. In a standard channel, the two pipelines work independently while performing identical processing. That adds redundancy inside MediaLive, but it does not make the full workflow resilient unless the source and downstream paths are also planned accordingly.

| Choice | What it means | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-pipeline channel | One MediaLive processing pipeline; simpler, with less MediaLive pipeline redundancy. | Use when the availability trade-off is acceptable. Identify what happens if that pipeline fails. |
| Standard, two-pipeline channel | Two independent MediaLive pipelines perform identical processing. | Provide two independent upstream sources and two downstream outputs, and account for the standard-channel charge. |
| RTMP push input | The upstream source initiates delivery to MediaLive. | Allow the source’s public IP address or addresses in the input security group; for a standard-class input, send to both generated destinations. |
| RTMP pull input | MediaLive connects to an upstream source endpoint. | Make the endpoint reachable from MediaLive and configure any required credentials. |
| RTMP(S) output | An output path demonstrated in the AWS Public Sector YouTube walkthrough. | Configure the destination and stream key, then verify the current YouTube ingest requirements. |
| HLS output | An output path described in AWS’s dated 2021 4K/HDR example. | Use only when it fits the intended workflow; recheck current console and YouTube requirements rather than treating that example as a general recipe. |
Redundancy is an end-to-end property. Two MediaLive pipelines cannot prevent an outage caused by a single source, a single network link, missing credentials, or an unavailable destination configuration.
Start the workflow and verify the broadcast
- Confirm the source is ready, the input can receive it, and the channel and output configuration are saved.
- For RTMP push, start the source first so it is sending to the MediaLive input when the channel starts.
- Start the MediaLive channel and check that it reaches Running. Watch the input and output status for errors.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that an incoming preview appears and check its audio and video.
- When the feed is ready, begin the public broadcast using the controls for your YouTube workflow. The exact sequence can vary with input and output type; AWS’s social-streaming tutorial uses a different start order for its example, so do not assume one sequence applies to every design.
- Monitor the source, MediaLive, network, and YouTube status throughout the stream. Have an operator or monitoring process ready to respond to a failed source, rejected feed, or required restart.
Plan for long-running streams, recordings, and recovery
A continuous broadcast needs a plan for interruptions and maintenance, not just a start button. Decide who will monitor it and how the source will resume if it stops, how you will handle a rejected YouTube feed, and how you will restart or update the channel without losing track of the public broadcast.

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving to create one complete VOD for a stream that exceeds 12 hours. If you need a full recording, arrange separate recording or plan to segment and restart the broadcast. Preserve the original source or recording independently of YouTube’s automatic archive behavior.
Estimate the cost of running MediaLive 24/7
There is no single reliable hourly figure for every 24/7 configuration. AWS MediaLive charges depend on the region and the resources and settings used. AWS’s MediaLive User Guide, Pricing in MediaLive, explains that running input charges apply to every input attached to a running channel even if the input is inactive or not receiving content; output charges depend on output configuration. A standard two-pipeline channel and a single-pipeline channel have different rates, and idle resources can also incur charges.
- Estimate the region, input type and count, output configuration and count, channel class, codec, resolution, frame rate, and any add-ons in the current AWS pricing tools.
- Include the full time the channel and attached resources will be running, not only hours with viewers or active input.
- Allow for related infrastructure and operational costs in your architecture; the MediaLive estimate alone is not a guarantee of the full system cost.
An AWS Public Sector walkthrough published around 2020 gave a $1.26-per-hour example for a 1080p, multi-destination setup in selected US regions. It is a historical example, not a current price or a sound estimate for a different configuration. Use current AWS pricing information for your account’s region and exact design.
