Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Wowza-to-YouTube stream has video but no sound, find the first point in the chain where audio disappears: the source and encoder, Wowza ingest or processing, Wowza’s YouTube output, YouTube ingest, or viewer playback. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and timestamped stream-health errors before changing unrelated settings. The steps differ between Wowza Video (the cloud service, sometimes called Wowza Streaming Cloud) and the separate Wowza Streaming Engine software.
First, identify which Wowza product you use
Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Engine are separate workflows; do not use one product’s screens to diagnose the other.
- Wowza Video: The YouTube Live external service/output is configured from the stream’s Components area. Check the Wowza preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview. In Wowza’s described workflow, YouTube performs the transcoding. Wowza Video: stream to YouTube Live.
- Wowza Streaming Engine: A YouTube Live stream target is configured in the application, and an incoming source stream is selected for delivery. Confirm the source includes audio. Wowza Streaming Engine: stream to YouTube.
If you are unsure, check the product name and interface you are signed into. Streaming Engine’s Incoming Streams screen is not the right diagnostic screen for a Wowza Video cloud stream.
Trace the audio from source to viewer
Check sound at each available checkpoint in order. A visible picture or an “active” status does not prove an audio track is present.

Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
- Source and encoder: Listen to the encoder’s output, or review a local recording if available. Confirm the intended microphone, mixer, desktop audio, or other source is selected, unmuted, and routed into the encoder. Check encoder errors and CPU load. YouTube recommends reviewing a local archive when diagnosing source or encoder quality problems; if encoder output sounds healthy, investigate the outbound connection. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Wowza input or preview: In Wowza Video, check the stream preview. In Streaming Engine, inspect the incoming stream’s status and details. If audio is already absent here, focus on the source, ingest settings, or processing—not YouTube playback.
- Wowza output and YouTube preview: Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and its Health Indicator and timestamped messages. If Wowza’s preview has sound but YouTube’s does not, investigate the Wowza output target and YouTube ingest. If both are silent, return upstream. These checkpoints narrow the fault but do not by themselves prove its cause.
- Viewer playback: If the Control Room preview has sound, test another viewer device or player and confirm its volume and audio output. If the problem occurs only for one viewer, the issue may be in that playback path rather than the stream’s source.
YouTube’s guidance says, “Your encoder is sending no audio.” It also notes that some encoders have a checkbox to turn audio on and that YouTube’s pipeline requires audio on all videos. YouTube Live streaming error messages.
Check the audio format and track count
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, compare the encoder’s audio output with YouTube’s documented settings and the exact error shown in Live Control Room. The settings page lists AAC or MP3, recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, and lists recommended audio bitrates of 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. Those are recommendations; a specific error may impose a narrower requirement. YouTube encoder settings.

- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
- If YouTube reports Incorrect stream format, its error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio.
- The same guidance says the ingestion stream must contain one audio stream—not zero and not multiple—and supports no more than two audio channels in that guidance. If the encoder is sending multiple audio tracks or an unsupported channel layout, adjust its output to match the specific error.
- Do not apply RTMP/RTMPS recommendations automatically to a different ingest protocol. Check the requirements for the workflow and protocol in use.
The general encoder settings and a specific Live Control Room warning address different cases. Follow the exact, current error message rather than treating one setting as a universal fix.
For Streaming Engine, verify ingest protocol and codec
Streaming Engine supports different audio codecs depending on the input protocol, so first establish whether the source uses RTMP/RTMPS, MPEG-TS, or another protocol. Wowza’s YouTube workflow requires the incoming video stream to include audio. If the source encoder cannot provide an audio track, Wowza’s guide describes adding one to the video-only source before delivery to YouTube. Wowza Streaming Engine YouTube workflow.

For an MPEG-TS input, Wowza documents a specific missing-audio troubleshooting path involving unaligned AAC audio packets. Do not apply that remedy to RTMP, Wowza Video, or another ingest type without first confirming the protocol. Wowza also identifies an “UNKNOWN” audio codec as a possible indication that the source has no audio; unsupported source codecs or disabled encode blocks can also be clues when troubleshooting transcoding. These are possibilities to investigate, not proof of the cause. Wowza Streaming Engine troubleshooting.
Test a change before the event
- Make one change at a time so you can tell which setting affected the audio.
- Run a short private or unlisted test using audio and movement similar to the planned event.
- Check the encoder output, Wowza preview or incoming-stream details, YouTube Live Control Room preview, and stream-health messages.
- Confirm sound before going live, then continue monitoring audio and video during the event. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before a live stream. YouTube live-stream guidance.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| The local recording or encoder output is silent | Check source selection, mute state, routing into the encoder, encoder errors, and CPU load. Verify the source signal before changing Wowza or YouTube settings. |
| The encoder has sound, but Wowza’s preview or incoming stream does not | Check the selected input, ingest protocol and codec, and any relevant processing or transcoding errors. For Streaming Engine, inspect the incoming stream details. |
| Wowza’s preview has sound, but YouTube’s preview does not | Check the Wowza YouTube output/target and the Live Control Room’s timestamped health errors. Compare the actual audio track count, codec, and channels with the error guidance. |
| YouTube’s preview has sound, but a viewer does not | Test another device or player and check local volume and audio output. Determine whether the fault affects all viewers or only one playback path. |
| Only an MPEG-TS Streaming Engine input appears to lose audio | Check Wowza’s MPEG-TS missing-audio guidance for AAC packet alignment; do not use this protocol-specific path for a different input type. |
The symptom alone does not establish that a microphone, interface, cable, or encoder needs replacement. Diagnose the point where audio first disappears before considering hardware changes.
