To stream a prepared fireplace video continuously on YouTube with FFmpeg, loop the file with -stream_loop -1, send the encoded output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, and monitor the broadcast in Live Control Room. The loop option repeats the input; it does not restart a crashed encoder, restore a failed connection, or guarantee uninterrupted service. For unattended streaming, you also need a process supervisor and a plan for machine, network, and YouTube interruptions.
What you need before starting
- A fireplace video and audio you own or are licensed to use in a YouTube live stream.
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected to the internet for as long as you want the broadcast to run.
- A sustainable upload connection, the source file’s technical details, and the stream server URL and key provided in YouTube Studio.
You do not need a camera or microphone to broadcast a prepared video file. Your computer, network, and encoder are still part of the live-stream path, so a single FFmpeg process is not a complete 24/7 reliability plan.
Check rights for the video and audio
Use footage and sound that you created or have permission to use for YouTube live streaming. Keep a copy of the license and verify its terms cover continuous public livestreaming, any music in the recording, and the regions or platforms you intend to reach.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it can replace the live stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt it, or terminate it; copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also lead to termination. Even licensed content may be interrupted unless the rights owner allowlists your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder option. If live streaming is not enabled on the channel yet, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public post, source repository, screenshot, or command log that others can access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose access and audience settings. Set the visibility and audience details appropriate to the broadcast before going public. Keep the stream in the intended test or private state while checking the signal.
- Keep the dashboard available. Live Control Room provides the preview and stream-health feedback you will use to confirm the incoming signal and diagnose warnings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. Use the RTMPS server URL provided for the stream when your FFmpeg build and workflow support it. The server URL and key are separate pieces of connection information; use the exact values displayed in Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and its stream-key guidance.
Prepare FFmpeg settings for the source
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option means infinite looping. It must appear before the -i option for the input file it applies to. FFmpeg documents the option order and behavior in its command-line documentation. For file playback at the media’s native rate, use -re where appropriate; it is an input option too, so place it before that input’s -i.

There is no safe universal copy-and-paste command for every fireplace file. The correct output depends on the source’s codecs, frame size and rate, audio track, installed FFmpeg build, shell, and chosen ingest protocol. First inspect those properties and decide whether to copy compatible streams or re-encode them. If encoding, select codecs and a bitrate that your machine can sustain and YouTube accepts. Protect the stream key if you include it in a command or script.
Settings to verify against YouTube’s current guidance
| Setting | Practical target | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | RTMPS recommended | Use the matching server URL from Studio and confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. |
| Video codec | H.264 is a listed option | YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1; support depends on the ingest protocol and encoder combination. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 are listed options | Confirm the output includes the intended audio track and a codec accepted by the chosen ingest workflow. |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | Pick a bitrate appropriate for the chosen resolution and sustainable upload capacity; do not assume one bitrate fits every connection. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set and verify the encoder output’s keyframe interval. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Match the source where practical | Higher resolutions and frame rates generally need more bitrate and encoding capacity. YouTube recommends testing rather than assuming a setting is stable. |
These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; check the official settings page for requirements and supported combinations. The connection must have headroom above the outgoing stream bitrate to cope with normal variation. If the source requires transcoding, the computer must also be able to encode continuously.

- HD AND DIGITAL: All tracks filmed with HD cameras and professional digital audio equipment
- VIDEO LOOP: Our DVD were programmed to give you a continuous fire on your TV
Start the loop and verify the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg with the source file as the looped input and the YouTube server URL and stream key as the destination. Keep the input options, including
-stream_loop -1and any applicable-re, before the relevant-i. - Watch the FFmpeg output for connection or encoding errors, then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health status.
- Test with representative fireplace movement and the full audio track. Confirm the video does not freeze, the sound is present and acceptable, and stream health has no unresolved warnings.
- Only after the test is satisfactory, set the stream to the intended visibility and audience access in Studio and start or continue the public broadcast.
Plan the live broadcast and its recording separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be fully archived or remain available as one recording. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
What makes a stream genuinely unattended
-stream_loop -1 handles one thing: repeating the input file. It does not supervise FFmpeg, restart the process after a crash, reboot a failed machine, restore power or internet, or verify that YouTube is still receiving the stream. A long-running setup therefore needs an operating-system service manager or equivalent supervisor, defined restart behavior, logs, and alerts. The exact configuration depends on the operating system and installed FFmpeg version; verify those details before relying on an unattended deployment.

- Enjoy a real wood burning fire (not a gas log imitation)!
- Recorded to provide the highest spectrum of flame color.
- Dolby Digital Sound of the actual wood burning fire snapping and crackling!
- Fill the entire screen of widescreens and standard sized screens! (no annoying letterbox "black bars")
- Easy to loop any of the three phases (beginning, middle, end) or play all three in sequence.
Think through the failure paths before leaving it alone:
- Encoder exits: configure a supervisor to detect and restart the process, and inspect logs to distinguish a transient failure from a bad command or source file.
- Computer restarts: ensure the encoder service starts after reboot and has access to the media file and credentials.
- Network or YouTube disconnects: monitor the encoder and Live Control Room, and determine how your chosen FFmpeg build and supervisor behave on reconnect. A loop flag does not itself reconnect.
- Power loss or prolonged outage: a home computer cannot stream while it is off or offline; plan how you will learn about the outage and restore service.
These are design requirements, not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime. Test the recovery behavior in your own environment before depending on it.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or connection rejected | Incorrect server URL or stream key, stream not ready, or an unsupported transport configuration | Copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room, verify the selected RTMPS URL and FFmpeg support, and check the encoder output for connection errors. |
| Preview appears but health warns about bitrate or connection | Output bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity or the connection is fluctuating | Reduce output demand by adjusting bitrate or resolution, then test again while watching stream health. |
| Choppy or frozen video | Encoding load, unsuitable output settings, a source issue, or unstable connectivity | Check FFmpeg logs and system load, confirm the source plays correctly, and test a lower-demand configuration. |
| Video works but there is no sound | The source has no usable audio track, or the output mapping/codec is unsuitable | Inspect the source’s audio stream, confirm the intended track is included, and use a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3. |
| Broadcast stops when the file ends | The loop option is missing, placed after the input, or applies to a different input | Place -stream_loop -1 before the file’s -i and confirm the correct source is being looped. |
| Stream stops after hours despite the loop | FFmpeg, the host, power, network, or ingest connection failed | Review logs and Live Control Room status; configure and test supervision and restart behavior rather than relying on the loop option. |
| Live stream interrupted for a content match | Third-party content was detected, even if you believe it is licensed | Check the rights and Content ID status with the rights owner; ask about channel allowlisting and resolve the claim before restarting. |
