For a single YouTube stream produced on one computer, OBS is usually the simpler place to start. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, enter them in an encoder, and start streaming. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a cloud video-processing service to consider when your workflow needs cloud-side processing, configured live inputs and outputs, or managed channel operations. They are different kinds of tools, not direct equivalents.

That is a workflow-based recommendation, not a measured comparison of setup time or performance. There is no established India-specific OBS-versus-MediaLive benchmark here for latency, reliability, or price. Your decision should turn on the production you need to run, the AWS Region and configuration involved, and your actual network and operating requirements.

OBS or AWS Elemental MediaLive for YouTube?

Question OBS AWS Elemental MediaLive
Where does processing happen? In the creator’s local software and hardware workflow. In AWS as a cloud video-processing service.
Best initial fit A production built and operated on one computer, with scenes and sources managed there. A workflow that needs cloud-side processing, configured live inputs and outputs, or managed channel operations.
YouTube handoff Use the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room in the encoder. Configure a MediaLive output compatible with the selected YouTube ingest protocol and settings; do not assume a one-click YouTube integration.
Cost basis OBS hardware, electricity, and other local workflow costs are not established here. Charges depend on configured and running resources, inputs, outputs, characteristics, and features; idle resources can also incur charges.

Choose OBS when your computer is the production system

Use OBS if you are creating the scenes and handling the sources locally and need to encode that production for YouTube. YouTube’s documented encoder setup is direct: obtain the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, configure the encoder, and start sending the stream. Whether your computer, operator, and network can sustain the production is a separate practical question.

Evaluate MediaLive when processing belongs in the cloud

MediaLive is relevant when you need cloud-side video processing or a configured input/output workflow rather than simply an encoder on your desktop. It supports several live input types, but codec support depends on the input type. Confirm that your source protocol and codec match the specific input you intend to configure.

Do not decide from an assumed India performance advantage

The available official documentation does not establish an India-based latency or reliability comparison between OBS and MediaLive. Before adopting either for an India deployment, verify the intended AWS Region and its current prices, the network path and ingest endpoint, and the production requirements you actually have. Do not treat a general cloud-versus-local distinction as proof of better performance.

How to send an OBS stream to YouTube

  1. Prepare the local production. Build the scenes and sources in OBS and confirm the computer can encode them at the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.
  2. Get the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
  3. Choose the secure ingest URL where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. Copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming the visible default RTMP URL is already secure.
  4. Configure the encoder. Enter the copied server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Select settings that match YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your actual upload capacity.
  5. Start and verify the stream. Start streaming from OBS, then check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed and that the preview and stream status are as expected before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

YouTube encoder settings that matter

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Use the recommendation for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.

Setting YouTube guidance Practical note
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set the encoder to the recommended interval and verify it does not exceed the limit.
H.264 at 1080p30 10 Mbps recommended. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it.
H.264 at 1080p60 12 Mbps recommended. Check the current YouTube table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps listed. Choose a frame rate appropriate to the content and keep it consistent with the encoder output.

These figures are YouTube Help recommendations on the page accessed in 2026. They do not establish a bitrate or quality guarantee for an Indian internet connection. Leave sufficient upload headroom for the chosen bitrate and other network traffic; if the connection cannot sustain the feed, lower the output settings and test again.

HDR is a separate setup, not an SDR toggle

YouTube’s India-localized HDR instructions describe an OBS workflow requiring OBS 30.1 or later, a supported hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. The page describes HLS or RTMP(S) as options, with additional stream-key configuration and segment requirements for HLS. Check YouTube’s current HDR instructions and the capabilities of your actual encoder hardware before configuring HDR; ordinary SDR RTMP directions do not automatically apply.

What MediaLive changes in the workflow

Inputs and codecs must be matched

AWS lists live input options including CDI, HLS, Link, MediaConnect, RTMP pull and push, RTP, SDI, SMPTE 2110, and SRT caller or listener. The supported codec combinations vary by input type. For example, AWS’s supported-codec table lists H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP inputs; do not infer from that example that every MediaLive input accepts the same formats.

For YouTube delivery, configure a MediaLive output that matches the ingest protocol and settings selected for the YouTube stream. Validate the exact output format and group constraints against current AWS and YouTube documentation for the configuration you plan to use.

Redundancy has bandwidth and cost implications

AWS describes the standard channel class as dual-pipeline. Its source-assessment guidance says upstream bandwidth should be twice the anticipated maximum source bitrate for a standard channel, because it uses two pipelines. That is a planning requirement, not a promise that the channel cannot fail. Include the additional bandwidth and the resources used by the configured workflow in your operational and cost planning.

MediaLive pricing: estimate the actual configuration

There is no defensible single MediaLive price for this comparison without the AWS Region, operating hours, channel class, input and output details, and selected features. AWS says input charges depend on input type and characteristics such as codec, bitrate, and resolution; output charges depend on characteristics including codec and frame rate. Input specifications also affect billing and resource allocation, so overstating a source’s resolution or codec can raise charges, while understating processing needs can leave insufficient resources and degrade output.

MediaLive state Billing detail described by AWS
Idle channel An idle channel charge covers inputs and outputs. Idle unattached or stopped push inputs can also be charged; idle pull inputs have no charge.
Running channel AWS says there is no channel charge as such, but charges apply for each attached input and configured output. Output charges apply even if an output is paused; input charges apply to attached inputs even when inactive or not receiving content.
Feature add-ons May add charges.

AWS states that there are no contracts or minimum commitments for MediaLive, but that does not mean the service is free of usage charges. Check the current AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing page for the intended Region and precise configuration before committing to a cost estimate. No exact India-region calculation is established here.

Copyright, reused content, and stream-key safety

  • Use material you have the right to stream. A successful encoder connection does not establish that a video, song, performance, or other material is cleared for a YouTube broadcast. Check the relevant rights and YouTube rules before going live.
  • Do not expose your stream key. The key gives access to your stream’s ingest destination. Keep it private and replace it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
  • Review the channel’s broader content obligations. Copyright compliance and YouTube’s reused-content policies are distinct questions; owning a copy of a recording does not by itself answer whether your use complies with platform rules. Review current YouTube policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that continuous playback is automatically permitted.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Symptom Likely check Action
YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed. Server URL, stream key, or selected ingest protocol may not match the active Live Control Room stream. Copy the current URL and key again, confirm the correct stream is open, and use the RTMPS URL when supported.
The feed connects but buffers or drops. The local upload path may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the source/network path may be unstable. Check the encoder’s current output bitrate and network conditions; reduce output settings if needed, then verify the updated feed in Live Control Room.
Video quality or motion is not as expected. Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval may not align with the content or YouTube guidance. Check the exact YouTube recommendation for the chosen codec and output, use CBR, and keep the keyframe interval at the recommended 2 seconds without exceeding 4.
MediaLive rejects or fails to process a source. The codec may not be supported for the selected input type, or the input specification may not fit the source. Check AWS’s supported-codec table for that input type and configure the input to reflect the source accurately.
MediaLive costs are higher than expected. Inputs, outputs, running or idle state, paused outputs, input specifications, and add-on features can all affect charges. Review the current regional pricing page against the actual channel state and configuration, including attached inputs and configured outputs.
HDR output is wrong or unavailable. The encoder hardware, OBS version, HEVC profile, color format, color space, or ingest setup may not meet the HDR workflow requirements. Recheck YouTube’s current HDR instructions and the supported settings of the selected hardware encoder.
