Verdict: AWS Elemental MediaLive can encode live sources in the cloud and send configured outputs to YouTube, but it is not a turnkey 24/7 prerecorded-video channel. You must design the source, channel, output, schedule, redundancy, and billing configuration—and verify YouTube’s current ingest settings separately. It is most compelling when you need configurable cloud encoding; for a simpler always-on channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an easier cloud-run alternative.
What MediaLive does—and what it does not
MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding service. It processes an input into configured live outputs; a channel can have multiple inputs attached, but it ingests from one at a time. You can use the channel schedule to switch between inputs. That makes MediaLive an encoding and switching component, not a complete channel operation: you still need to provide a suitable source, configure delivery, and manage the destination platform. AWS’s channel workflow documentation describes this model.
For an always-on YouTube channel, the key question is not only whether MediaLive can encode continuously. It is whether your source plan can supply valid content continuously and whether the output, destination, and operating costs fit the channel. The cited AWS documentation describes the building blocks, but does not establish a tested end-to-end recipe for a continuously looping YouTube playlist.
Can MediaLive keep a YouTube channel live 24/7?
It can be part of a continuous live workflow when a channel has an available source to encode and a correctly configured output destination. It should not be assumed to turn an arbitrary collection of video files into an unattended, endlessly looping YouTube stream. AWS distinguishes its supported input types: MP4 and TS file inputs are for VOD, while RTMP Pull can be used for live or VOD input. Check the AWS live and file input matrix against your actual source design.

Sources and scheduled changes
A channel can have multiple attached inputs, and its schedule can switch inputs. AWS also documents scheduled image-overlay actions. A schedule can be updated while the channel is stopped or running. These capabilities can help orchestrate planned changes, but switching inputs is not the same as a built-in looping playlist of uploaded videos.
Loss of source video
AWS says a running channel must always be encoding content. For source video loss, MediaLive can be configured to emit replacement content or, for an RTMP output group, pause delivery. With pause behavior, the underlying RTMP connection remains open. This is configurable handling of source loss—not automatic restoration of the missing source. See AWS’s source-loss guidance.

How the YouTube output is configured
MediaLive’s RTMP destination settings require destination details supplied by the downstream operator: protocol, address, port, application name, and stream name or key. AWS’s RTMP destination instructions explain the generic fields. They do not establish YouTube’s current ingest endpoint or recommended stream settings; confirm those in YouTube’s current live-stream setup before configuring the output.
One or two destinations
An RTMP output group has one output by default. AWS’s destination guidance specifies two destinations for a standard channel and one for a single-pipeline channel. A standard channel runs two independent pipelines that process identically. To benefit from that redundancy, the source and destination sides also need to support the two paths; a dual pipeline alone is not an end-to-end availability guarantee.

Resilience: useful, but bounded
Standard-channel pipelines provide resilience within MediaLive by independently processing the same content. The benefit depends on configuring both sides of the workflow for redundant paths. It does not establish a guarantee for the source, network, RTMP destination, YouTube ingest, or the overall channel’s availability. Treat pipeline redundancy as one layer in a larger reliability plan, not as a promise that the stream cannot fail.
What does an always-on MediaLive channel cost?
MediaLive charges depend on configured resources and their states, including inputs, outputs, features, codec, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, channel class, add-ons, and AWS region. AWS states that a running channel itself has no separate channel charge, while its inputs and outputs are billed. In particular, a configured output can still incur a charge while paused if its channel is running. Idle channels and unattached or idle push inputs have separate billing rules; idle pull inputs are not charged. Consult the MediaLive billing guide and price the precise configuration and region using the AWS MediaLive pricing page.

AWS’s on-demand model bills running inputs, outputs, and add-on features by duration, rounded up by the minute with a 10-minute minimum. The pricing page advertises up to 75% savings versus on-demand for a 12-month reserved pricing offer. That is AWS’s maximum advertised saving, not an estimate or guaranteed discount for a particular channel; compare the commitment against your expected usage and configuration.
AWS also publishes a Live Streaming on AWS cost example for a one-hour event, 1,000 viewers, and a US East (N. Virginia) deployment. It includes packaging and distribution services as well as MediaLive, so it is not a MediaLive-only estimate or a representative bill for an always-on YouTube channel. Use the deployment guide only with its architecture and assumptions in view.

Alternatives for keeping a YouTube stream running
| Option | Operating model | Fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube; upload, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. | Always-on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with a free first day. Designed for uploaded-video programming rather than camera-based live production. See StreamNeo. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | Managed cloud encoding stage using configured sources, channels, schedules, and outputs. | Consider when you need configurable cloud encoding and can design and operate the full source-to-destination workflow. Pricing varies with configuration and region. |
| On-premises Elemental appliance | Encoding hardware operated at a production facility or remote venue. | AWS positions this category for cases where cloud latency is unacceptable or connectivity is limited. It is a distinct alternative, not a required MediaLive accessory. See the AWS FAQ and AWS comparison. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube rather than build a configurable encoding pipeline, StreamNeo’s workflow is three steps:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live production. Start the free first day.
Who should choose MediaLive?
- Choose MediaLive when you need a managed cloud encoding stage with configurable inputs, outputs, schedules, and pipeline options, and you can engineer the continuous source and destination workflow.
- Consider StreamNeo when the requirement is specifically to loop uploaded recordings or a playlist on YouTube without keeping a computer running.
- Consider on-premises encoding when your production constraints make cloud latency or connectivity unacceptable; compare total costs only after matching workload, redundancy, and distribution scope.
Before committing to an always-on design, confirm the input format and continuity plan, YouTube’s current ingest settings, the number of outputs and pipelines, regional rates, and what should happen when the source fails.
