You can’t use Vimeo’s 24/7 Extended streaming mode to simulcast to YouTube. Vimeo says Extended streams do not support simulcasting. You can use Vimeo to send a finite, scheduled live event to YouTube, or use a separate method for a nonstop YouTube feed. The right setup depends on whether you mean one uninterrupted broadcast or recurring scheduled events.
Can Vimeo Livestream run a continuous YouTube broadcast?
Not through Vimeo’s Extended streaming mode. Vimeo’s Extended streaming FAQ says this mode supports encoder-fed streams without time limits, but “simulcasting to other destinations is not available for extended streams.” Don’t expect a YouTube destination toggle in this mode.
Vimeo offers two workflows that are easy to confuse:
- Extended streaming: one continuous Vimeo event that remains active while it receives an encoder signal and must be ended manually. It requires the Enterprise add-on and does not simulcast to YouTube. Recording and DVR must be disabled, and the stream is not archived. See Vimeo’s enablement instructions.
- Finite event simulcasting: a scheduled or otherwise time-limited Vimeo event sent to YouTube through an integrated destination or custom RTMP. This can reach YouTube, but it is not Vimeo Extended streaming.
How to send a scheduled Vimeo event to YouTube
For a finite broadcast, Vimeo documents both direct YouTube account integration and custom RTMP. The Vimeo account must have an eligible Advanced, Premium, or Enterprise-with-Events plan, and the YouTube account must be verified for live streaming. Plan details can change, so check your Vimeo account and the current Live events FAQ before scheduling.

Option 1: Connect YouTube as a destination
- Open the Vimeo live event you want to broadcast.
- Go to Settings > Destinations and connect the YouTube account, following Vimeo’s prompts.
- Check the destination before the event. When the Vimeo event goes live, the integrated destination automatically sends it to YouTube, according to Vimeo’s YouTube simulcasting guide.
- Start the Vimeo event at its scheduled time and verify the broadcast appears on YouTube.
Option 2: Add YouTube through custom RTMP
- Schedule or open the YouTube live event in YouTube Live Control Room, then copy its RTMP URL and stream key.
- In Vimeo, open the event’s Settings > Destinations and add a custom RTMP destination.
- Paste the YouTube RTMP URL and stream key into the corresponding Vimeo fields and save the destination.
- Start the Vimeo encoder feed at the scheduled time. If the YouTube event was scheduled in advance, the incoming encoder signal may not publish it by itself: open YouTube Live Control Room and select Go live.
That final manual action is important: Vimeo’s RTMP workflow notes that a scheduled YouTube event can retain its credentials and event link while waiting for the operator to select Go live. Confirm the event is actually live on YouTube rather than assuming that a Vimeo signal alone started it.
What Vimeo Extended streaming does—and how to enable it
If your goal is a continuous Vimeo broadcast rather than a YouTube simulcast, Extended streaming is Vimeo’s encoder-fed mode for a stream without a set time limit. It is an Enterprise add-on. The Vimeo event remains active while the encoder supplies a signal and stops only when you end it manually; it is not recorded or archived.

- Open the Vimeo event settings for the event you want to run continuously.
- Open Production.
- Turn off Record event and DVR. Vimeo requires both to be disabled for Extended streaming.
- Enable Extended stream and save the event settings.
- Send an encoder signal to the event. Keep the signal running for as long as the event should remain active.
- End the event manually when the continuous broadcast should stop.
Vimeo’s Extended streaming FAQ explicitly rules out using this mode to simulcast elsewhere, including YouTube. Adding an encoder or a YouTube destination through ordinary simulcast settings does not remove that restriction.
Recurring schedules are not a 24/7 stream
Vimeo recurring events create separate scheduled occurrences, not one uninterrupted broadcast. Vimeo supports daily, weekly, or monthly recurrence. Each occurrence counts toward concurrent-stream limits, and Vimeo says the duration field is informational: it does not automatically stop the broadcast. The operator must end each occurrence. For a prerecorded finite event, Vimeo also documents an auto-start workflow using its web production tool. It requires a scheduled start, uses the browser’s time-zone settings when converting the time for viewers, and can fail if concurrent-stream limits are already occupied. It does not support external encoders. That is a separate feature, not a way to make an Extended stream simulcast to YouTube. Details are in Vimeo’s prerecorded-event scheduling guide.
Limits to check before planning a Vimeo event
Vimeo’s Live events FAQ lists these plan and policy figures; they are account terms, not guarantees of audience capacity. Confirm the current limits with Vimeo before a production:

- You can’t find YouTube as a destination in Extended mode: that is a product restriction, not a missing setting. Extended streams cannot simulcast. Use a finite Vimeo event for the documented YouTube destination workflow, or use another method for a nonstop YouTube feed.
- The YouTube event has an incoming signal but is not live: for a scheduled custom RTMP event, open YouTube Live Control Room and select Go live.
- YouTube is unavailable to connect: check that live streaming is enabled and the YouTube account is verified, and that the Vimeo account has an eligible live-event plan.
- A recurring event stops or overlaps unexpectedly: do not treat its duration field as an automatic stop control. End each occurrence manually and account for each one in Vimeo’s simultaneous-stream limit.
- A destination disappears or the broadcast becomes fragmented: Vimeo warns that turning a destination off midstream archives the event at that destination; turning it back on can create a new destination event. Avoid toggling a destination during a live event unless you intend to create a separate event on that platform. See Vimeo’s simulcasting guidance.
