Then check the source and network path into MediaLive, inspect input-loss and failover behavior, and separately check MediaLive’s output to YouTube. A slate or continuing output does not prove the source is healthy: MediaLive can keep encoding replacement content after video disappears.
The title alone cannot identify the cause. The relevant input type, channel class, output group, metrics, and YouTube error messages determine which branch applies.
1. Determine whether the failure happened at startup or during a running stream
Channel fails as it starts: investigate the input probe
MediaLive probes the first input at startup to detect the input and its sources. If detection fails, the input and channel can fail immediately; the configured input-loss replacement sequence is not a startup recovery mechanism. AWS lists possible causes including an absent input (especially with RTMP), a source that exceeds the channel’s specifications, or incorrect input settings. Confirm the source is publishing, verify the input configuration and source format, correct the problem, and restart the channel. AWS: Handling loss of video input
Channel was healthy, then lost video: investigate ongoing input loss
For a running channel, loss handling can replace missing source video on the output side while the channel continues encoding. Identify when the last good source video arrived and whether the channel’s output is showing replacement content, failing, or still reaching YouTube. These are different symptoms and may point to different fault boundaries.

2. Trace the fault from the source to YouTube
Check the stream path in order: upstream encoder or source, network path into MediaLive, MediaLive input and channel, MediaLive output, then YouTube ingest. This prevents a YouTube-side ingest warning from being mistaken for an input failure, or vice versa.
Check the source and MediaLive input
- Verify the upstream encoder is still publishing and that it is sending the expected source.
- Check that the source format fits the channel’s current specifications and the input settings are correct.
- Compare source health with MediaLive input metrics over multiple time windows. AWS identifies
InputVideoFrameRateas an input-health indicator; unstable values warrant checking the source and/or network. - For supported RTP or MediaConnect inputs, use
InputLossSecondsto assess loss duration. Consistent zero indicates health; repeated maximum values indicate an unhealthy input; values that rise and return to zero indicate recovery. - For a channel configured with automatic input failover, inspect metrics using the active-input dimension so you can tell which input is currently carrying the channel.
Metric interpretation depends on input type and channel configuration; not every metric described here applies to every MediaLive input. See AWS: Monitoring inputs.

Check MediaLive output and YouTube separately
In YouTube Live Control Room, review stream health and the timestamped error messages alongside MediaLive output status. YouTube labels red errors critical and yellow errors moderate; messages remain until the underlying issue is fixed. Its error guidance covers format, audio and video codecs, video-stream count, interlacing, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. Follow the exact error shown rather than changing unrelated encoder settings. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors
3. Understand what MediaLive does when input video disappears
A running MediaLive channel must continue encoding content. By default, when input video is lost, MediaLive repeats the last valid frame for 1,000 ms, encodes black frames for 1,000 ms, then sends a black slate indefinitely. Operators can customize the repeat and black-frame intervals and choose a slate image or color. AWS documents 32-bit BMP, PNG, and TGA as slate image formats. AWS: Handling loss of video input

Delivery of replacement content depends on output group configuration. For HLS, Microsoft Smooth, RTMP, and UDP/TS output groups, operators may choose whether replacement content is delivered or discarded. MediaPackage pauses delivery; other output group types always deliver replacement content. Check the affected channel’s output-group behavior before treating a slate as evidence that YouTube is receiving the expected program.
Do not confuse replacement timing with failover timing
AWS describes input-loss handling as potentially reacting to a missed expected frame; at 60 fps, one frame is about 17 milliseconds. That is distinct from automatic failover, for which AWS gives 1,000 milliseconds as a typical configurable trigger example. The first concerns replacement content; the second is a configurable condition for switching inputs. Neither number is a universal setting for every channel.

4. Configure or diagnose automatic input failover
Automatic input failover only protects against failures covered by a correctly configured alternate source. It is not the same as input-loss replacement content, and it cannot protect against a shared failure that affects both inputs.
Make the backup genuinely independent
For RTMP/RTP failover, AWS specifies that the paired inputs should carry identical content over different network paths. The pair must match in video, audio, captions, and metadata. AWS warns that the first input must have a different network path to MediaLive than the second; if both depend on the same encoder or route, a failure there can take out both. A single-input channel needs two sources for the pair; a standard channel needs four sources, two per input. AWS: Setting up automatic input failover with RTMP and RTP inputs

Check switching and recovery behavior
In AWS’s documented startup guidance for the described failover configuration, the active input switches after it has been unhealthy for 3 seconds, and a recovered input is marked healthy after it has remained healthy for more than 30 seconds. When the secondary input is active, failback depends on input preference: equal preference can leave the channel on the secondary input, while primary preference can switch back. Treat these as documented behavior for that configuration, not a promise that every channel is set up identically. AWS: Automatic input failover startup
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Verify YouTube’s ingest settings and stream key
Confirm the destination and credentials
Check that the MediaLive output destination uses the intended YouTube stream URL and the current stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as encoder credentials and address information; if it has been reset or replaced, update the MediaLive output configuration to match. YouTube provides a reset process for a compromised key or one that needs replacement. YouTube: Create and manage stream keys
Match encoder output to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and keyframes every 2 seconds, not more than every 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. That bitrate example applies to that codec, resolution, and frame rate—not every stream. Check the error message and match settings to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test with representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
6. Choose resilience for the failure boundary you need to cover
| Mechanism | What it addresses | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Input-loss handling | Controls what MediaLive encodes or delivers when input video disappears, such as a repeated frame, black frames, or slate. | A healthy alternate source and path; it may preserve output continuity without restoring the program feed. |
| Automatic input failover | Switches away from an unhealthy eligible input when a valid backup source and independent path are configured. | Protection from a shared upstream or network failure affecting both inputs. |
| Pipeline redundancy | Addresses MediaLive pipeline failure at the channel level. | Input failover. AWS says downstream handling must be able to accept and switch between two outputs for this resilience design. |
Choose according to the failure boundary, independence of backup sources and paths, downstream ability to handle redundant output, and desired automatic failback behavior. A second input that relies on the same encoder or network route is not independent protection. See AWS: Pipeline redundancy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. Troubleshoot common symptoms
- Channel fails immediately on start: Check whether the first input is present and publishing, whether its format fits channel specifications, and whether input settings are correct. Correct the issue and restart; do not rely on the running-channel slate sequence.
- Channel runs but viewers see black or a slate: Check source publication, the input’s frame-rate and loss metrics where supported, network path, and configured replacement behavior. If failover is intended, verify the alternate source and independent path.
- MediaLive appears to encode, but YouTube reports an error: Read the timestamped Live Control Room message. Check destination URL/key, format, codecs, video count, interlacing, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes as applicable.
- Failover does not switch or quickly fails again: Verify the pair is configured for the relevant input type, both sources carry matching content and metadata, and their paths do not share the point of failure. Review the active-input metric dimension and the channel’s failover preferences.
- Input appears recovered but channel stays on the alternate: Check configured input preference. In the AWS-described behavior, equal preference may keep the secondary active; primary preference may switch back after recovery.
