Start by checking three points in order: the Wowza source and output are active, the Wowza RTMP target uses the URL and stream key for the correct YouTube live event, and YouTube’s Live Control Room shows an incoming preview. A preview means YouTube is receiving the stream; you may still need to start the event separately for viewers. These checks narrow down where the connection is failing, but without access to your account they cannot identify one cause for every missing stream.
Wowza says “Wowza Streaming Cloud is now Wowza Video.” Current Streaming Cloud customers retain functionality in the UI and API, though the interface has changed. The steps below describe the current Wowza Video external-service workflow.
Check the stream path in order
Use the checkpoints below to locate the first part of the workflow that is not working. YouTube receipt, shown by its incoming preview, is different from starting the broadcast for viewers.
- YouTube event: A live event exists for the channel, and its Stream Settings provide the URL and key you intend to use.
- Wowza source and output: The source is running and the intended output rendition is present and active in Wowza Video.
- RTMP target: The saved external-service target points to the selected YouTube event’s current URL and key.
- YouTube receipt: The event’s Live Control Room displays an incoming preview.
- Public broadcast: After the preview appears, the event is started using YouTube’s live-event controls.
If a checkpoint fails, focus on that stage and verify its settings before changing unrelated configuration. The documented steps establish a troubleshooting sequence, not a definitive diagnosis for an individual account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches#1 Best Overall

Verify the YouTube event and credentials
In YouTube Studio, make sure the channel is set up to broadcast live, then create or select the event you want to use. Open that event’s Stream Settings and note its primary stream URL and stream key. If you plan to use a backup URL, note that too. Wowza’s guide identifies YouTube Studio live-stream setup as a prerequisite.
Use the settings for the intended event, not credentials copied from another event. If you select a different YouTube event, compare the Wowza target with that event’s own Stream Settings.

Configure the Wowza Video RTMP target
In Wowza Video, open the live stream and its Components or output list, select the intended output rendition, and choose Add external service. Choose RTMP, give the target a recognizable name, and enter the YouTube details as follows. The current Wowza guide was updated February 24, 2025.
| Wowza target field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Primary URL | The selected YouTube event’s primary Stream URL. Wowza says to omit the rtmp prefix and trailing slash from URL fields. |
| Stream name | The selected YouTube event’s Stream key. |
| Backup URL | Optional. Use the event’s backup URL if desired; omit the rtmp prefix and trailing slash. |
| Username and password | Leave both blank, as directed by Wowza’s guide. |
Save the target, then start the Wowza stream or source according to your existing workflow. The relevant current instructions are in Wowza’s guide to live streaming to YouTube with Wowza Video.

Check Wowza, then YouTube Live Control Room
Confirm the Wowza source and output
First verify that the source is active and the intended output exists. Check the current interface’s equivalent of the stream preview or status. Older Wowza instructions describe checking Wowza’s video preview before moving to YouTube; their interface directions are legacy, so do not assume every control is in the same place today.
Look for YouTube’s incoming preview
Open the selected event in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Wowza’s current guide says that a preview appears automatically when YouTube receives the stream. If it does not appear, the full path is not yet verified. Recheck the saved target against the event’s current Stream Settings and confirm the Wowza source and output are active.

- Cat-6 UTP (Unshield Twisted Pair) ethernet cables for connecting networked devices such as computers, printers, routers, and more
- RJ45 connectors ensure universal connectivity; 250 MHz bandwidth
- Low signal loss with a transmission speed up to 10 gigabit per second
- Snagless plug design helps prevent damage when plugging/unplugging cable
- Gold-plated contacts and bare copper conductors improve signal integrity and resist corrosion
Start the event for viewers
An incoming preview confirms receipt; it does not by itself mean viewers can watch a public live broadcast. Once the preview is available, use the event controls in YouTube to begin broadcasting. The legacy Wowza workflow also distinguishes a received preview from clicking Go Live.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What to verify next |
|---|---|
| No Wowza preview or the intended output is absent | Confirm the source is running and that you selected the intended output rendition. The current UI may differ from older Wowza instructions. |
| Wowza is active, but YouTube shows no incoming preview | Compare the saved RTMP primary URL and stream key with the selected YouTube event’s current Stream Settings. Check that the target is saved and attached to the intended output. |
| YouTube shows a preview, but viewers cannot see a live broadcast | Use the event’s YouTube controls to start broadcasting; receipt and going live are separate steps. |
These checks follow Wowza’s required target fields and documented preview checkpoints. They are not a published mapping of every symptom to a single failure code.
