To restart an FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after power returns, run FFmpeg from a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Then verify both that the service is running and that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream: a Linux process alone does not confirm the broadcast is live.

What automatic restart does—and what it does not

A boot-enabled service starts the stream process when the Raspberry Pi boots. This is different from launching FFmpeg manually, which does not make it start again after a reboot. Automatic startup also does not, by itself, guarantee recovery from a camera or file problem, unavailable network, invalid stream key, or YouTube broadcast failure. Configure and test those parts of your setup as well.

Prepare the FFmpeg command

Start with the exact FFmpeg command that works when you run it manually. The service needs the same executable, input, output URL, paths, environment variables, and permissions. Your input might be a camera, a video file, or another feed; the right capture options depend on that source and the Raspberry Pi OS and hardware you have installed.

  • Confirm the FFmpeg executable path and the input device or file.
  • Check that the service account can read the input and any configuration files.
  • Keep the stream key out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs; restrict access to the file or environment configuration that contains it.
  • Do not copy an old raspivid command without confirming that its camera and capture software are appropriate for your current OS and hardware.

A community-maintained Raspberry Pi 4 project documents an FFmpeg setup with a systemd service, but its command and implementation are specific to that project; it is not a universal camera command or proof that every Pi can handle every stream workload: Raspberry Pi 4 live-streaming project.

Create a systemd service

Create a unit for your own command and adapt the service name, paths, account, and input to your setup. Have systemd run FFmpeg directly where practical, or call a maintained executable script. A shell pipeline in ExecStart is not automatically run by a shell; put a pipeline in a script or explicitly invoke a shell. The example project supports the general boot-start pattern, not a single unit file suitable for every Raspberry Pi OS release or input.

Set the service user, working directory, environment, and restart behavior deliberately. If Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a camera, or mounted storage may not be ready when the Pi starts, account for that in the service’s dependencies and retry behavior. Avoid a tight restart loop. There is no one retry policy established for all devices, so validate your choices on the target Pi.

Enable the service at boot and start it

  1. Save the unit in the appropriate systemd service location for your installation, using a name such as ffmpeg-youtube.service. Use the paths and command you verified in the previous section.
  2. Reload systemd’s unit definitions after adding or changing the service: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  3. Enable the service so it starts on future boots, then start it now: sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. Replace the example unit name with yours.
  4. Inspect its current state: systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  5. Read its recent output for FFmpeg errors: journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. Add -f to follow new log entries while diagnosing.
  6. Reboot the Pi and repeat the status and log checks. A service that works only when started manually has not yet passed the boot test.

The cited project’s documented installation sequence likewise copies its service file, reloads systemd, enables and starts the service, and uses status and journal checks to diagnose it.

Set encoder output to match YouTube and your connection

Use a streaming protocol and encoding configuration supported by YouTube, then confirm your Pi’s chosen encoding path and network can sustain it. YouTube Help says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” The guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not Raspberry Pi performance benchmarks. The cited YouTube page does not state a publication year.

Target video YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Choose the resolution and frame rate your source and encoding setup can maintain, not just the highest setting in YouTube’s table. YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Network disruptions can still break a stream. Test before going live and check YouTube’s stream preview and health; its guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring health during the event.

Protect and recover the YouTube stream key

YouTube describes the stream key as like the stream’s password and address: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not expose it in a public repository, screenshot, or log. If it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return after power loss

Symptom What to check Next step
The service is inactive or failed after reboot Service name, unit syntax, enablement, and systemd status Run systemctl status <service> and journalctl -u <service>; reload systemd after unit edits and confirm the service is enabled.
The service starts, but FFmpeg exits FFmpeg path, input path or device, file permissions, environment variables, and command arguments Compare the service’s command and account with the working manual command. Read the journal for the specific FFmpeg error.
It works when started manually but fails at boot Network, camera, or mounted storage may not be ready when the service starts Set dependencies and retry behavior appropriate to the actual setup, avoid a tight restart loop, and test after reboot.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube has no healthy preview Stream key, ingest configuration, bitrate, upload capacity, and YouTube stream health Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream, validate the key and encoder settings, and ensure available upload bandwidth includes the recommended 20% headroom.
The stream stops later even though boot startup worked Camera or input availability, changing network conditions, credentials, and YouTube-side broadcast status Use service logs and YouTube’s stream health to locate the failure. Boot enablement handles host startup; it does not alone guarantee recovery from every later failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or other changing feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not a camera-based live feed. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free first day.
