To show a title card between prerecorded videos in a YouTube Live stream, make the card a video segment, place it between the clips, and join the sequence with FFmpeg. For mixed source formats or a card you need to generate, the flexible route is a filter graph that normalizes the segments and uses the concat filter. If every segment—including a pre-rendered card—already has compatible streams, the concat demuxer may avoid re-encoding. Then encode to YouTube-compatible settings, connect with the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and test before the event.
The examples below are adaptable patterns, not tested commands for arbitrary media files. Inspect your inputs and FFmpeg build, and verify the resulting feed in YouTube before relying on it live.
Choose how to make and join the card
Use the filter-based approach when you need to create a title card, control its duration, or normalize clips with different properties. Use the concat demuxer only when all files are already encoded with compatible stream parameters; it cannot create a card that does not exist as a compatible media file.
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Generated card and concat filter | Text-based card, precise timing, or clips that need normalization. | The assembled output is encoded again. Corresponding video and audio streams must be made compatible at the concat point. |
| Image-backed card and concat filter | A designed still graphic that you want to turn into a timed segment or layer over a background. | Set the image duration and match dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio behavior to the other segments. |
| Concat demuxer | Clips and a pre-rendered card whose streams and parameters are compatible, when you want to avoid re-encoding. | Less flexible for generating a card within the same processing graph; incompatible streams can prevent a clean join. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ: concatenating video files. For filter and source syntax, see the FFmpeg filters documentation.

Build a card segment and assemble the sequence
1. Inspect the inputs and your FFmpeg build
Check each clip’s video dimensions, frame rate, time base, pixel format, and audio stream properties before building a filter graph. The concat filter joins corresponding streams, so normalize the properties that differ. In particular, decide whether every segment will have audio. If the clips have audio but the card is silent, create silent audio for the card with matching channel layout and sample properties, or deliberately design the graph to handle the audio streams consistently.
For a text card, FFmpeg can use a color source with drawtext. Check that your build includes the filter and its FreeType support (for example, with ffmpeg -filters or the build configuration). Font selection and text shaping can also depend on optional libraries and build settings. If using a designed still, FFmpeg’s overlay filter can layer an image over a video or generated background; the image still needs to become a timed video segment for the sequence.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
2. Set the card’s duration and appearance
Choose the card’s resolution to match the program output, then choose a deliberate duration. Make text legible against its background, leave safe margins, and check that the title is not cut off at the edges. These are design decisions rather than universal FFmpeg or YouTube requirements.
A filter-graph pattern is to create a timed color source, draw text on it, and connect that segment between the program clips with the concat filter. The exact filter inputs, stream labels, and options depend on your files and FFmpeg build; do not paste a generic graph without mapping and normalizing the actual streams.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
3. Normalize and concatenate
At the concat filter, align the video dimensions, frame rate or time base, and pixel format as appropriate. For audio, align sample rate, sample format, and channel layout. The ordering should be clip one, card, then clip two; repeat that pattern wherever another interstitial belongs. If you use a still image, give it the intended duration and ensure its video and any audio streams match the rest of the sequence.
The concat demuxer is a different option: list the existing media segments in sequence only when their streams and parameters are compatible. A generated card must first be rendered as a matching media segment. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for its format details.

4. Encode the finished feed for YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For its H.264 recommendations, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60; these are platform recommendations, not universal requirements. Choose the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s current table, and make sure your available upload capacity can sustain it. Guidance can change; check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before streaming.
The encoder pattern is: feed the concatenated output to an encoder configured for your chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframes; encode audio as AAC or MP3 if your stream includes audio; then send it to the ingest endpoint. Exact command options depend on the encoder and FFmpeg build you use.

5. Connect securely and test in Live Control Room
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the planned broadcast. Prefer the RTMPS URL shown there when supported; YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.
- Supply the endpoint and key to your encoder without publishing the key in a public command example, screen recording, source repository, or other exposed location. YouTube treats the key like a password and an address for the encoder connection.
- Start the encoder and check the incoming preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. YouTube advises testing before starting the live stream and recommends using audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Monitor stream health during the event.
- When finished, stop the encoder feed and complete the end-stream flow in Live Control Room.
Troubleshoot common problems
drawtextis unavailable: your FFmpeg build may lack the required support. Checkffmpeg -filtersand its build configuration; use a build with FreeType support or prepare the card as an image and turn it into a segment.- The concat filter errors or the join is unstable: inspect corresponding streams and normalize video dimensions, frame rate or time base, and pixel format; for audio, match sample properties and channel layout. If the inputs are already compatible, the concat demuxer may be an alternative.
- The card breaks audio continuity: make the audio topology consistent across segments. Add matching silent audio to a silent card when the graph expects audio on every segment, or explicitly construct the graph for segments without audio.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: check that you used the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, that the encoder is using the selected RTMP or RTMPS endpoint, and that the key has not been mistyped or exposed and replaced.
- The preview shows connection or stream-health warnings: compare the actual codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Test again with representative motion and audio, and make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
Copyright and stream-content checks
A title card does not change the rights status of the video or audio between cards. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s rules and the permissions that apply to your clips and music. Replaying prerecorded material as a live feed is not itself a substitute for meeting YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. For a practical preflight, see the copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start a free day.
