For a YouTube channel that should appear live around the clock, use an encoder to send a continuous feed to YouTube Live. A YouTube playlist organizes existing uploads for sequential playback; it does not turn them into a live broadcast. You can use both: run an encoder-based live channel and organize separate lofi sessions into playlists for on-demand listening.

“24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast or a complete replay. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so plan for monitoring, recovery and separate local recordings.

What is the difference between a YouTube playlist and an encoder?

Option What viewers get What it does
YouTube playlist Uploaded videos played in sequence; viewers can choose the playlist and watch sessions on demand. Groups existing YouTube videos. It does not create an encoder-fed live broadcast or live watch page. YouTube describes playlists as a way to combine videos viewers may want to watch as a series: YouTube Help: Create and manage playlists.
Encoder-based live stream A live watch page and, when enabled, real-time chat, with the feed presented as a broadcast. Sends an ongoing audio/video feed to YouTube using the live server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The encoder can be software or hardware: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

The distinction is about format, not whether your video file contains pre-recorded material. An encoder can send a prepared lofi mix as a live feed; the playlist remains a sequence of uploaded videos.

Which format should a 24/7 lofi channel use?

Choose an encoder for a continuous live experience

If your goal is one persistent live destination where listeners arrive at any time and can use live chat, use an encoder workflow. It sends the feed to YouTube Live, where you can monitor its status and respond if it disconnects.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Use playlists for separate on-demand sessions

Playlists suit distinct uploaded mixes, themed sessions or a catalog viewers can play in order. They are useful alongside a live channel, not as a substitute for its live feed.

Use both when the formats serve different purposes

Publish original sessions as separate uploads and arrange them in playlists, while operating a separate encoder-fed stream for the live watch page. Keep the distinction clear for viewers: an upload or playlist is not the live broadcast.

What you need before going live

  • Live access: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check current requirements in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • An encoder: YouTube accepts software or standalone hardware encoders. Its encoder guidance lists OBS among software supporting HLS output; HLS is one ingestion option and has higher latency than RTMP. Choose the ingestion method your encoder and YouTube Studio setup support rather than assuming a dedicated hardware unit is required. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
  • A prepared feed: Assemble the audio and visuals you have the rights to use, and confirm that the encoder can keep sending them continuously. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key supplied in YouTube Studio.
  • A continuity and archive plan: Decide who or what will notice a failure, how the encoder will reconnect, and where you will keep a local recording.

How to set up the live stream with an encoder

  1. Enable live streaming and check channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and follow the prompts. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated enablement period of up to 24 hours. Confirm there are no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days before scheduling the launch.
  2. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and configure the stream’s title, description, visibility and other audience settings. Review the current stream details and live requirements displayed for your channel.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, obtain the ingestion details and enter them in the encoder’s corresponding server and stream-key fields. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, share it publicly or expose it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Configure the outgoing feed. Set the encoder’s video, audio and ingestion settings to values supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your upload connection. Do not assume the same bitrate or resolution will suit every connection; check YouTube’s current table at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, then test the actual feed before relying on it.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Send the feed and wait for YouTube Studio to show the incoming signal. Check the picture, audio, title and public watch page before treating the channel as live. YouTube recommends setting up in advance and checking the live preview, audience accessibility and stream quality: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
  6. Plan reconnection and recording before leaving it unattended. Verify how your encoder behaves if the connection drops, test recovery where possible, and monitor local archive growth and integrity. YouTube recommends a local archive backup for long streams because its own archive may be incomplete.

Why 24/7 does not guarantee a full-day replay

YouTube’s current archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That 12-hour threshold is YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026, not a promise that every shorter stream will produce a complete replay. Do not rely on one continuous 24-hour broadcast as the only copy of the lofi session. Keep a local recording and, if you want durable on-demand listening, publish distinct uploads and organize them in playlists. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Clear music rights before broadcasting

Only stream music and visuals for which you have the rights required for the intended use. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Review the YouTube Terms of Service and confirm the scope of any license directly with every relevant rights holder; a license for one use, territory or format does not establish permission for a worldwide YouTube livestream.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder image, temporary interruption or termination, and archived streams can receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube instructs you to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; without that, a live stream can still be interrupted. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams. Check the copyright safety checklist before launch.

Monetization is not guaranteed by an always-on format

Eligible live streams may use ads and fan-funding features, but YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve. Monetization eligibility also depends on channel and content policies. YouTube’s policy applies to live streams and expects monetized content to be original and authentic rather than generic, repetitive or mass-produced. On July 15, 2025, YouTube said it renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is covered. An always-on stream, by itself, does not establish eligibility. See YouTube channel monetization policies and YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube Studio receives no signal The encoder may have the wrong server URL or stream key, or the key may have been changed. Compare the encoder fields with the current stream settings in YouTube Studio. Replace an exposed or outdated key and update the encoder.
The preview is blank, silent or poor quality The feed may not be reaching the encoder correctly, or its output settings may not match the source or YouTube’s supported guidance. Inspect the encoder’s input meters and output preview, then check the video and audio settings against YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Test again before leaving the stream unattended.
The live broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the stream connection may have dropped. Check Studio alerts and connection status. For a rights match, verify permissions and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. For a connection failure, inspect encoder logs and reconnect behavior.
The 24-hour broadcast has no complete YouTube replay A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use the local recording as the archive source. For separate on-demand sessions, upload them and use playlists.
Live streaming cannot be enabled yet First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, and the channel must meet YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements. Finish channel verification, check Live Control Room eligibility and allow the enablement period to complete before launch.
