You can keep a white noise or rain broadcast live on YouTube by sending a looping, rights-cleared audio-and-video program from an encoder to YouTube Live. You need an eligible channel, a computer running encoder software or a hardware encoder, a reliable internet connection, and permission to use both the sound and visuals. A live feed that stays online is not the same as a complete 24-hour replay: YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so plan separately if viewers need a recording.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and methods.
- An encoder: software on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder. It sends the audio and picture to YouTube; it does not create rights to the material you broadcast.
- A continuous program: a rain recording, white noise, or other ambient audio paired with a still image or looping video.
- A dependable upload connection with spare capacity, plus a plan to monitor the stream and recover if the encoder, power, or network fails.
Clear the sound and visuals for live use
Use recordings and visuals you created yourself, or materials whose licenses explicitly permit livestreaming and archiving. Check the license terms for the actual use, territory, duration, and any attribution or distribution requirements. “Royalty-free” by itself does not guarantee that a particular license covers a continuous YouTube broadcast or its replay.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt a broadcast, including when you believe you have a license; YouTube notes that a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Keep documentation of your permissions and ask the rights owner to confirm any allowlisting needed. Rights must cover both the live feed and any archive. Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Confirm eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live. If live streaming is not enabled, follow YouTube’s verification and activation prompts, then check that the channel has no current restriction preventing live access. Eligibility and activation can take time, so do this before your planned launch.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, choose an encoder-based stream and enter its title, description, visibility, and schedule as appropriate. Scheduling ahead gives you time to configure and preview the feed before viewers arrive.
- Copy the connection details. YouTube provides a server URL and a stream key in Live Control Room. Enter them in the corresponding server/URL and key fields in the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Build a continuous program. Set the ambient track to repeat, or create a playlist of sounds. Pair it with a still image or a looping video. Check that the audio repeats cleanly, that there are no silent gaps or abrupt peaks, and that the visual source also continues rather than ending after one play.
- Configure output and inspect the preview. Choose a resolution and bitrate that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance emphasizes spare upload capacity, a preview check, and monitoring rather than prescribing a single setting for every creator. Review the audio and picture in the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. - Start the encoder, then verify the live state. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and reports no unresolved stream issue. Start or manage the broadcast there according to the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Keep the key private after setup.
Make an overnight or continuous stream more reliable
A 24/7 broadcast is a maintenance task, not a set-and-forget guarantee. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s bitrate; its streaming tips specify 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and advise accounting for primary and backup stream bitrates. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee against outages.

- Use a stable network connection and avoid competing uploads or other heavy traffic on the same connection.
- Before launch, test the full audio-and-video loop and watch the Live Control Room preview. Check that the sound is audible, the image is present, and the encoder remains connected.
- Monitor the feed after launch and periodically thereafter. A computer, encoder, power supply, router, internet service, or YouTube can fail; do not promise viewers uninterrupted playback.
- If using a backup encoder, configure and test the handoff before relying on it. YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. Include both primary and backup bitrates when calculating available upload capacity.
- For a computer-based encoder, plan for power and network interruptions and unattended software issues. Backup power may improve resilience, but size it to the equipment and the runtime you actually need.

Plan the replay separately from the live broadcast
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one stream running for 24 hours or longer will be preserved as a complete replay. Do not assume that keeping the live feed online also creates a full-day archive.

If a replay matters, check current Live Control Room behavior before going live and consider ending and scheduling separate segments that are each under 12 hours. Segments give you clearer archive boundaries, but they break continuous viewing during the transition. Confirm that the chosen workflow meets your replay needs; archive availability is separate from the encoder’s ability to keep sending a live feed. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Understand monetization limits for ambient loops
Eligible channels may enable live ads and fan-funding features, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Do not build a budget around assumed ad delivery or earnings. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

YouTube’s monetization policy update dated July 15, 2025 renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. Reused-content decisions apply at the channel level. A minimally changed rain or white-noise loop may therefore create a monetization risk even if you have permission to use the audio and visuals; copyright permission and monetization eligibility are different questions. Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has no live restriction in the previous 90 days. Complete any activation prompt in YouTube Studio and allow time for live access to become available.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Compare the server URL and stream key in the encoder with the values in Live Control Room. Check the encoder’s connection state and network access. If the key was exposed or may be wrong, reset it and update the encoder.
- The broadcast disconnects or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity and competing network traffic, leaving the recommended 20% headroom and accounting for any backup feed. Inspect the encoder and Live Control Room status; test a backup path rather than assuming it will take over.
- Audio or video is missing in the preview: Check that the correct audio and visual sources are selected, that the loop has not ended, and that the encoder is sending both. Verify the preview before making the stream public.
- The live stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Review the matched content and confirm the license covers livestreaming and archiving. If licensed material still triggers a match, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for the channel.
- The 24-hour replay is incomplete or unavailable: The automatic archive condition documented by YouTube is for encoder streams under 12 hours. Check current Live Control Room behavior and use planned segments if a complete replay is important.
- Ads do not appear or monetization is unavailable: Ad delivery is not guaranteed, and eligibility does not override the inauthentic-content or reused-content policies. Review channel eligibility and make sure the material offers sufficient original value rather than relying on a minimally altered loop.
