To keep a file-based YouTube Live stream running from a Debian VPS, pace the file in real time with FFmpeg, send it to the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg under a service manager and monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream health. A restart policy helps recover from process exits; it does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery or detect every stalled input or unhealthy ingest.
What this setup does—and what it does not
This guide covers publishing media already stored on your Debian VPS as a live YouTube stream. FFmpeg reads the file in real time, encodes or copies it as configured, and sends it to YouTube. The example below loops one file; it is not a camera capture setup, a generated feed, or a playlist manager.
YouTube treats the incoming video feed (liveStream) separately from the broadcast (liveBroadcast). You must configure the broadcast lifecycle in YouTube as well as keep the encoder process running. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.
Choose a Debian VPS for sustained streaming
Before renting a host, compare its sustained outbound capacity with your intended video bitrate plus audio and transport overhead. Also check the monthly transfer allowance, CPU capacity if you will encode in software, network route to YouTube, reboot controls, and provider support and uptime terms. These properties vary by provider, plan, and region; verify the terms for the specific VPS rather than assuming a short speed test predicts continuous performance.

Estimate transfer before choosing a bitrate
At a steady 5 Mbps video payload, transfer is about 2.25 GB per hour before audio and protocol overhead. If it runs continuously for 30 days, that is roughly 1.62 TB before overhead. These are arithmetic estimates assuming 24 hours of streaming each day, not a provider allowance or measured result. Higher bitrates increase transfer in proportion to the bitrate.
Decide whether the VPS will encode
The example uses software H.264 encoding through FFmpeg’s libx264, which consumes CPU. If the file already has compatible codecs and settings, a stream-copy workflow may avoid re-encoding, but the output still needs to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements. Verify the media’s codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio before choosing a workflow.
Install and inspect FFmpeg
- Connect to the Debian VPS using your normal secure administration method and update package metadata:
sudo apt update. - Install FFmpeg from the repositories configured for that Debian system:
sudo apt install ffmpeg. - Confirm the binary and build details:
ffmpeg -version. Package versions and enabled codecs depend on the Debian release and repository configuration. - Inspect the media file:
ffprobe -hide_banner /srv/stream/program.mp4. Check that the path exists and note the video and audio codec, dimensions, frame rate, and duration.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and credentials
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Configure its title, visibility, and intended start/end behavior there.
- Open the Stream tab or the scheduled stream’s Stream settings. Reveal and copy the current RTMPS URL using the lock icon, then copy the stream key.
- Verify that the endpoint begins with
rtmps://. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; its instructions explain the secure endpoint and troubleshooting at YouTube’s RTMPS setup help. - Keep the URL and key private. Treat the key like a password: do not commit it to a repository or place it in a world-readable unit file or public logs. Use a protected configuration or credential mechanism with access limited to the service account. If exposed, rotate it through YouTube’s controls.
Do not rely on an old endpoint copied from an online example. The account’s current Live Control Room settings are authoritative. If YouTube’s SSL error persists, check both protocol and server, and follow YouTube’s guidance about specifying port 443 when appropriate.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Stereo audio guidance recommends AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the matching codec and frame-rate row below, not a bitrate chosen solely because a VPS appears fast. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS can sustain the rate. The first command below is a conservative 720p30 H.264/AAC example, not a universal requirement. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP gives a 2-second keyframe interval. For a different frame rate, adjust -g and -keyint_min so the interval remains about two seconds. Leave network headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and variation.

YouTube’s SDR guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. Do not apply SDR assumptions to HDR: YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered when the encoder lacks needed RTMP capabilities.
Run a file as a live stream
For stored media, FFmpeg’s -re reads at the input’s native frame rate rather than as quickly as the server can process it. Put it before the input it applies to. The following illustrative pattern loops one file indefinitely and uses placeholders, not a real credential. Check the exact endpoint/key format shown for your account: some setups provide a complete stream URL, while others expect the key appended to the base URL.

Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the encoder, that the media is readable, and that the resulting stream is accepted by YouTube before deploying it unattended. Store credentials in a protected environment or credential file readable only by the service account; do not place a real key in shell history or a broadly readable service definition.

Looping and file boundaries
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, but it does not turn multiple files into a playlist. At the loop boundary, playback returns to the start of the same file; check the media’s ending and beginning for an acceptable transition. A multi-file playlist needs a deliberate input/concat strategy, with compatible streams and tested transitions. There is no one universal looping command for every playlist layout.
Test before leaving it unattended
- Run the command manually with the intended audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate. Use a representative section of the actual program.
- Open the broadcast preview in Live Control Room and confirm that picture and sound arrive correctly.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the feed. YouTube recommends testing before starting; see its encoder guidance.
- Stop and adjust the configuration if the preview shows problems, then test again before enabling automatic startup.
The YouTube Live Streaming API identifies issue classes including unsupported audio/video codecs, bitrate that is too low, frame-rate mismatch, keyframe-frequency mismatch, and insufficient incoming video that can cause viewer buffering. See the API’s stream status documentation.

For unattended operation, use a system service manager such as systemd to start the encoder after boot, run it as a dedicated unprivileged user, restart it when the process exits, and retain logs that an operator can inspect. Store credentials through a protected mechanism with permissions restricted to that service user. Validate the service definition and credential handling on the Debian release you target; paths, package builds, and service conventions can differ.

A restart policy such as systemd’s Restart=always can relaunch a process after exit, but it is not a guarantee of continuous service. FFmpeg may remain alive while its input stops advancing or the remote ingest is unhealthy. RTMP TCP keepalive is not application-level reconnection, a process watchdog, or guaranteed delivery. Review FFmpeg’s protocol documentation and test failure recovery rather than treating a successful service start as proof of an always-healthy broadcast.
What to monitor
- Service state and restart count.
- Recent FFmpeg stderr or journal output, including connection failures and encoder errors.
- Output bitrate, CPU and memory pressure, and disk space for media and logs.
- Whether the input has reached EOF or stopped advancing as expected.
- YouTube’s preview, stream-health messages, and broadcast state: scheduled, started, or ended as intended.
Troubleshoot common failures

Copyright, reused content, and broadcast rules
Only stream media you have the right to use, including its music and other embedded material. A technically valid FFmpeg feed does not establish that you have distribution rights or that a channel qualifies for monetization. Check YouTube’s current policies and the permissions for each asset before scheduling a continuous broadcast. Repeating a file also does not change its underlying rights or make it original content.
