Use the SSD as storage for your videos and playlist, mount it at a stable location, then have FFmpeg read the playlist and send the output to YouTube Live using the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep your current boot drive unless you have checked that your Raspberry Pi model supports USB boot and is configured for it. The exact encoding command and sustainable resolution depend on your Pi, source files, and upload connection; no single command or bitrate is right for every setup.
What the SSD does in this setup
The USB SSD holds the media files and a text file listing them. Raspberry Pi OS can continue running from its existing boot media. An SSD used for videos does not automatically become the operating-system drive: USB mass-storage boot is supported on compatible, configured Raspberry Pi models, and the details vary by model. See the Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation and getting-started documentation before changing boot media.
There are three separate parts to the job: reliable access to the SSD, a playlist FFmpeg can concatenate, and an encoder stream YouTube accepts. A working playlist does not prove the Pi can encode it in real time, and a running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving stable audio and video.
Prepare the SSD and media files
Identify the Pi, operating system, and drive role
Before connecting or formatting anything, note the exact Raspberry Pi model and operating system. Decide whether the SSD is for media only or also for booting. If it is media-only, leave the existing boot configuration alone. Formatting can erase existing files, so copy off anything you need before preparing the drive.

Connect, mount, and keep the mount location stable
Use your operating system’s normal storage tools to prepare and mount the SSD. This workflow does not have one universally correct filesystem, partition layout, or mount command: those depend on the OS and setup. Choose a stable mount location, then keep the video files and playlist paths consistent with it. If the drive fails to mount after a reboot, FFmpeg may report missing input files even though the playlist itself is unchanged.
Check the SSD enclosure’s power requirements and the Pi’s available USB power, especially if other peripherals share the supply. Raspberry Pi’s hardware guidance cautions that attached disks draw power; multiple disks may require externally powered hardware. A powered enclosure or hub is a conditional fix, not a requirement for every SSD.

Make a concat-demuxer playlist
Put the videos on the SSD and create a plain-text concat list. Each entry uses the concat demuxer’s file directive and a path to a media file, for example:
file '/mnt/media/video-01.mp4'
file '/mnt/media/video-02.mp4'
Replace the example paths with the actual stable mount path and filenames. If a filename contains an apostrophe, newline, or other special character, use the escaping rules documented by FFmpeg rather than assuming the example quoting will work unchanged.

The concat demuxer is not a transcoder that normalizes arbitrary files. FFmpeg states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. Check that the listed files have compatible stream structure, codecs, and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can lead to artifacts or gaps around transitions; if transitions behave badly, inspect source durations and compatibility before blaming the SSD.

Stream copy or re-encode
If every source file already has mutually compatible streams and meets YouTube’s supported ingest settings, stream copying may avoid an unnecessary encode. If not, the files may need to be re-encoded into a consistent output. The right choice depends on the actual codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio, and Pi model. The available guidance does not establish a universal Raspberry Pi encoding capability or a safe one-size-fits-all bitrate, so do not assume a particular board can encode any source at its original quality in real time.

Loop the input
FFmpeg provides -stream_loop as an input option; its placement and behavior depend on the input and installed FFmpeg version. Consult FFmpeg’s command-line documentation and the local ffmpeg -h full output for the version installed on the Pi. Test a short run and confirm the loop transitions before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Because the Pi model, OS, FFmpeg version, media formats, and desired output were not specified, a single ready-to-run command would risk prescribing incompatible options. Build the command around the actual inputs and the YouTube output settings below; verify option order against your installed version.

Set up YouTube Live ingestion
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output to use that RTMPS URL and key, with an output format and codecs supported by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) among its encoder choices.
- Use YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps, but that is platform guidance, not a claim that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a given resolution and frame rate.
- Choose a bitrate and resolution the Pi can sustain and your upload connection can deliver consistently. Confirm the appropriate values in YouTube’s current guidance and test with your actual source media; the evidence available here does not establish a universal bitrate for an unspecified Pi.
Option names and RTMPS URL/key formatting can change with FFmpeg versions and YouTube’s interface. Use the values shown in your Live Control Room, not a copied key or ingest address from another stream.

- Confirm the SSD is mounted and that every playlist path resolves from the Pi.
- Run the playlist locally or send a private or scheduled test stream before a public broadcast. Check audio, video, playlist transitions, and whether the loop restarts as intended.
- Watch YouTube’s stream preview and health indicators during the test. A process that has not exited can still be sending an unstable or unusable feed.
- Only proceed to the intended broadcast once the preview is stable and the Pi is not reporting storage, USB, or encoding problems.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot find a playlist file or video | The SSD is not mounted at the expected path, or a playlist entry is incorrect. | Check the current mount location and verify each listed path and filename, including capitalization and spaces. |
| Gaps, artifacts, or failed transitions between files | Input files may have incompatible streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata. | Compare the source media and review FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requirements; normalize incompatible media if needed. |
| The playlist ends instead of repeating, or loop behavior differs from expectations | -stream_loop is an input option, and behavior depends on the input and FFmpeg version. |
Check the installed version’s help and command-line documentation, then test the loop with the concat input. |
| YouTube does not show a healthy preview | The ingest URL/key may be wrong, output settings may not be accepted, or the connection may be unstable. | Re-copy the event’s RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check the encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance, and observe stream health during a test. |
| USB disconnects or storage errors occur under load | The SSD, enclosure, cable, or other attached devices may exceed available power or have an unstable connection. | Check connections and device power needs; if the setup calls for it, try a powered enclosure or hub. Raspberry Pi discusses disk power in its hardware documentation. |
| Video stutters or encoding falls behind | The selected output may exceed the Pi’s processing capacity or the upload connection’s sustained capacity. | Check the Pi model, source codecs and resolution, output mode, and upload stability. Try a less demanding configuration and test again; no universal Pi performance limit is established here. |
Or let it run in the cloud
