You can stream an MP4 to YouTube Live without re-encoding if its actual video and audio streams are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements. Use FFmpeg’s -c:v copy and -c:a copy to pass those streams through unchanged, and -re to read the file at its normal playback rate. An MP4 extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.
What “without re-encoding” means
MP4 is a container: it can hold different video and audio codecs. Check the streams inside the file rather than assuming that every file ending in .mp4 is suitable for live ingest.
FFmpeg’s stream-copy option copies encoded packets without decoding and encoding them again. It avoids an additional encode and its associated quality loss, but cannot filter, resize, or otherwise alter the media. It also cannot fix an unsupported codec, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval. Stream copy may fail if the output format cannot accept a source stream. See FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation.

ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4
Review the video and audio stream details, including codec, resolution, frame rate, and any multiple tracks. The command later in this guide selects the first video and first audio stream; change the mapping if those are not the tracks you want, or if the file has no audio. Check the FFmpeg version and local help if an option or muxer is unavailable in your build.
Compare them with the current ingest guidance
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. These are current YouTube recommendations accessed in 2026; check the live YouTube Live encoder settings before an event because recommendations can change. Listed formats do not guarantee that a particular combination can be copied into your chosen output unchanged.

For H.264, YouTube’s 2026 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Its AV1/H.265 recommendations for those same resolutions and frame rates are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube targets, not a measurement of your connection. Match output to your source and upload capacity; the guide also provides recommendations for other resolutions and minimum bitrates.
Get the YouTube destination URL and key
- Enable live streaming on your channel if it has not been enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming activation guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key. Use the exact values provided for the selected stream; do not assume a fixed ingest URL. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this workflow.
Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, recording, or source-control repository. If it is exposed, reset or rotate it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Run FFmpeg with stream copy
For a source whose video and audio are already compatible, use this template, replacing both placeholders with the exact destination details from Live Control Room:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv 'RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'
-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending the whole file as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents real-time pacing as useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming. Input options belong before the corresponding-i; see FFmpeg’s advanced options.-i input.mp4identifies the local source file.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream;-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream. Adjust these deliberately for alternate tracks or a file without audio.-c:v copy -c:a copycopies the selected encoded streams instead of re-encoding them.-f flvspecifies the output muxer commonly paired with RTMP-family streaming. This is an illustrative template, not a command tested against your file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube event. If the muxer or stream is rejected, verify the installed build and destination requirements.
Quote the destination string as shown so shell characters in the URL or key are not interpreted. Keep the key private even when using a local script.

Start, verify, and end the live stream
- Check that your upload connection can sustain the intended bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before the event; it advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Start the FFmpeg command and check that it continues sending data without an error.
- In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview, audio, representative motion, and stream-health messages. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then click Go live; sending an encoder feed does not itself replace that step.
- When finished, stop the FFmpeg process and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder workflow guidance.
When to copy and when to transcode
| Approach | What it does | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | Passes existing encoded streams through without decoding or encoding. | The source streams and timing already meet the destination and output-container requirements. | Avoids another encode, but cannot change codec, frame size, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe structure. |
| Transcode | Decodes and encodes media to new stream settings. | You need a different codec or must change a property such as resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval. | Requires encoding work and may introduce quality loss; choose settings that fit YouTube guidance and available upload capacity. |
If YouTube requires an encoded property your file does not have, stream copy cannot supply it. Re-encoding is necessary for that change. FFmpeg’s documentation explains the limitations of stream copy.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The stream is rejected immediately: Confirm that the server URL and key belong to the selected Live Control Room stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the output protocol and muxer match the destination requirements.
- Video is unsupported or black: Inspect the actual codec and parameters with
ffprobe; the MP4 extension does not identify them. Compare against YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Stream copy cannot transcode or filter an incompatible stream. - Audio is missing or rejected: Confirm that the intended audio track is mapped and that its codec is suitable for RTMP/RTMPS. The example selects the first audio stream and must be changed for other layouts; YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Playback buffers or stream health is poor: Test upload capacity, then reduce the target bitrate or resolution to something the connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommended bitrates are targets, not evidence of your available bandwidth.
- Keyframes are too far apart or resolution must change: Stream copy preserves the encoded structure. It cannot rewrite the GOP/keyframe cadence or resize the video; transcode if the change is required.
- FFmpeg reports an output or muxing error: Check your FFmpeg build, the selected tracks, and whether the output container can carry the source streams. A listed YouTube codec alone does not ensure that every combination is accepted by every muxer or ingest path.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Technical compatibility does not establish that you have rights to stream the content or that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and any other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization rules. Replaying a file as a live stream does not change the rights status of its contents.
