Yes. You can control a YouTube livestream running on a cloud computer from another computer. Use remote desktop software for full access to the cloud computer, or OBS Studio’s WebSocket interface for supported OBS controls without taking over the whole desktop. YouTube Studio handles a separate set of tasks, including stream settings, preview, and the go-live workflow.
Choose which part of the livestream you need to control
A cloud livestream involves two control layers: the encoder running on the cloud computer sends the video feed, while YouTube’s Live Control Room manages YouTube-side settings and the stream workflow. The right method depends on the action you need.

Studio access does not operate the cloud computer’s desktop or OBS scenes. Conversely, remote desktop or OBS WebSocket control does not replace checking YouTube’s preview and stream status.
Use remote desktop for full control of the cloud computer
Remote desktop software lets you connect from your local computer to the cloud computer and use its desktop. This is the flexible option if you need to interact with OBS’s full interface, change settings, or use applications beyond OBS.

- Configure access on the cloud computer. Install or enable a remote desktop provider supported by the cloud host’s operating system, then configure its access controls. For example, AnyDesk’s official instructions describe connecting with a remote device ID or alias and either entering an unattended-access password or waiting for the remote user to accept the session.
- Connect from your other computer. Open the remote desktop client, enter the cloud computer’s ID or alias, and complete the configured authentication or acceptance step.
- Operate the encoder. In the remote desktop session, open OBS or the relevant application and make the changes you need.
- Check the YouTube stream separately. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect the preview and stream status.
Exact setup steps and operating-system support depend on the remote desktop provider and cloud host; check their current documentation before configuring access.
Use OBS WebSocket for supported OBS controls
If you only need external control of OBS actions—such as switching scenes or sources—you may not need a full remote desktop session. OBS Studio includes WebSocket control by default in OBS Studio 28 and later. Compatible external tools and scripts can use it to control supported OBS functions.

- Check your OBS version. The built-in WebSocket interface is included by default in OBS Studio 28 and later.
- Configure the WebSocket connection in OBS. Use OBS’s WebSocket settings to enable and configure access for your chosen external client or script.
- Enable authentication and set a password. OBS recommends password protection. Do not expose an unauthenticated WebSocket endpoint to the internet.
- Connect a compatible client. Use the client or script to issue the OBS controls it supports, such as changing a scene or source.
- Monitor the actual output. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and monitor the stream’s audio and video; a successful control command alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving the intended output.
Use YouTube Studio for YouTube-side stream controls
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using an account with appropriate access to the channel. YouTube documents Live Control Room as the place to manage stream settings and follow the preview and go-live workflow. The encoder sends the feed; in YouTube’s setup steps, you wait for the preview and then select Go live.
Some actions require a particular channel role. For example, YouTube says a channel owner or manager is required to reset a stream key. If you cannot access a control, confirm that the account has the necessary channel permissions.

Protect access and monitor the stream
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like: they tell the encoder where to send the feed. Do not share or expose the key. If it is compromised, use YouTube’s reset process and update the encoder with the new key.
- Authenticate remote access. Use the remote desktop provider’s access controls and a strong password. For OBS WebSocket, enable authentication and set a password.
- Watch the outgoing stream, not just the controls. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live and keep an eye on audio and video quality during the event. Remote access should give you a way to observe the stream as well as send commands.
Troubleshoot common control problems
