Find out which happened before changing settings.
First identify what went offline
Record the failure’s local date, time, and time zone. Then check each part of the chain: the cloud host, the encoder, YouTube’s ingest and Live Control Room, and the public watch page. A watch page that looks offline is not, by itself, proof that the encoder process stopped.
- Encoder process: Is the encoder or streaming service still running, or did it exit or restart?
- Connection to YouTube: Is the encoder sending a feed to the intended YouTube server URL with the intended stream key?
- Live Control Room: Does YouTube show the stream as active, inactive, or unhealthy? Are there timestamped errors?
- Broadcast state: Was the broadcast scheduled, manually ended, or archived?
A YouTube encoder stream uses a server URL and stream key to send the feed. Check both in the cloud encoder configuration without exposing the key in screenshots, logs you share publicly, or support tickets that do not require it. YouTube’s encoder setup directions describe the stream workflow.
Read YouTube’s error and match its timestamp
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the health indicator and its timestamped errors before changing encoder settings. YouTube marks critical errors red and moderate errors yellow. Note the exact message and time; an error about bitrate or format calls for a different check than a loss of incoming stream data. Use that timestamp as the anchor for the rest of the investigation. Compare it with the cloud host’s system or service logs and the encoder’s connection logs. Look for process exits or restarts, scheduled jobs, virtual machine or container shutdowns, resource exhaustion, reconnect attempts, and network events. The exact host, encoder, and logs determine what those events mean; there is no provider-specific overnight timeout established for this case.
Fix connection losses and dropped frames
If the encoder reports dropped frames or repeated connection losses, investigate whether the connection to YouTube’s ingest server is stable and able to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That is a diagnostic clue, not proof that every cloud-hosted encoder has the same problem.

- Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point. This is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed fix. For a cloud encoder, use the host’s actual, sustained outbound capacity rather than the speed of your home connection.
- Try another ingest server if the encoder offers the option. Check whether the connection becomes stable, while keeping a record of the change and time.
- Inspect network configuration. Check the route, IP and network settings, firewall or security software, VPN, and any network-optimization software. OBS notes that some of its network options are Windows-only.
- Check the relevant network path and equipment. For a computer or network under your control, investigate Wi-Fi, router, cabling, hardware, and ISP issues; wired networking may help where applicable. For a cloud host, ask its provider about network events at the failure timestamp.
- Review encoder logs for reconnect attempts. Repeated retries or a disconnect at the same time as YouTube’s error can help distinguish an ingest-path problem from a stopped process.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting covers dropped frames, server selection, bitrate, network settings, and when to contact an ISP. Its suggested 75% starting point is not an overnight-failure diagnosis.
Fix format or bitrate errors one setting at a time
If Live Control Room identifies a stream configuration problem, change the setting named by the error rather than altering several parameters at once. YouTube documents H.264 video and AAC audio among the settings relevant to its stream-error guidance, and it warns about unsupported formats and incorrect bitrates. Confirm that the health indicator improves after each change.

- Check that the video format and audio format match YouTube’s documented requirements.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the error message and the encoder’s actual output.
- Verify that the cloud encoder is using the intended stream server URL and stream key.
- After changing a setting, watch the health indicator and encoder log long enough to confirm that the feed remains connected.
Use YouTube’s current stream-error help for the particular error shown; do not treat one bitrate or format change as a universal fix.
Check scheduled broadcasts and archiving
If the encoder reconnects but the broadcast remains offline, check the broadcast’s state and setup workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup directions include waiting for a preview and clicking Go live for a scheduled broadcast. Verify whether the broadcast was scheduled and whether the required live-start action was completed.

YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That archive rule is worth checking when reviewing the broadcast state, but it does not establish why a stream failed overnight. Match the archive or end time to the encoder and Live Control Room evidence rather than assuming the 12-hour rule caused the interruption. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- Failure and recovery times, including the time zone.
- The Live Control Room health state and exact timestamped error.
- Whether the encoder process stopped, restarted, or attempted to reconnect.
- Relevant host, encoder, and network log entries.
- Any setting changed and whether the next stream remained healthy.
If the feed and settings looked healthy immediately before the failure, send the cloud host the timestamps and relevant logs. If the problem is on a network you manage and OBS’s connection checks do not resolve it, OBS recommends contacting the ISP. Avoid sharing the stream key when escalating.
