Run tmux on the VPS, start your verified FFmpeg command inside a named session, then detach with Ctrl-b followed by d. If your SSH connection drops, the remote tmux session can remain active and you can reattach later. This protects against a terminal disconnect—not an FFmpeg crash, a VPS shutdown, or YouTube rejecting the stream.
What tmux does—and what it does not
tmux is a terminal multiplexer: it keeps a terminal session on the remote host so you can detach from it and reconnect later. The tmux manual says a session “will survive accidental disconnection (such as ssh(1) connection timeout) or intentional detaching.” Read the tmux(1) manual.
- SSH disconnect: The tmux session can keep running while the VPS and its tmux server remain active.
- FFmpeg exits: tmux does not relaunch it. You can reattach to inspect output, then fix the cause and restart it.
- VPS reboots or shuts down: tmux alone does not start the session again. Configure a service manager for boot-time startup.
- YouTube stops accepting the stream: tmux cannot correct a bad stream key, unsupported media setting, or ingest failure.
Start FFmpeg in a tmux session
1. Connect to the VPS
SSH into the VPS using your usual account. Make sure tmux is installed on the VPS; installation commands vary by Linux distribution, so use that distribution’s package instructions if the tmux command is unavailable.
2. Create a named session
At the VPS shell, run:
tmux new -s youtube
This creates a session named youtube and opens its terminal. Start tmux on the VPS, not on your local computer.

3. Start your verified FFmpeg command
Run the FFmpeg command you have already checked for your input, installed FFmpeg build, YouTube stream key, and selected ingest protocol. There is no single safe command for every source and build. Keep the process output visible in the tmux pane so you can inspect errors if the stream stops.
Use the ingest details shown for the specific stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes an ingestion address for sending a stream and directs users to YouTube Help for recommended encoder settings; it does not establish one universal FFmpeg command for every source. 4. Detach without stopping the session
Press Ctrl-b, release the keys, then press d. This detaches your terminal from the session. You can now close the SSH client; the session and FFmpeg process can continue on the VPS as long as the remote host and tmux server stay up.

5. Reconnect and inspect
SSH back into the VPS and run:
tmux attach -t youtube
You will return to the session and can inspect FFmpeg’s output. Reattaching confirms only that you can access the terminal session; it does not prove that FFmpeg is healthy or that YouTube is receiving valid media.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive. You can use tmux for interactive administration and systemd to manage an unattended FFmpeg process. The systemd service manual describes service lifecycle and restart settings; configure and verify the unit on your own distribution rather than assuming a policy is enabled by default. Consult the systemd.service(5) manual.
Input interruptions and FFmpeg reconnect options
FFmpeg documents protocol options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their applicability depends on the protocol and how the option is set. Check the documentation for your installed build and the relevant protocol before adding options. These settings do not promise recovery from every YouTube output failure and do not restart an exited FFmpeg process. Review FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

VPS reboot and process restart
If FFmpeg must return after a process exit or host reboot, configure a service manager such as systemd with an appropriate unit, restart policy, and boot-time enablement. Test the unit on the target VPS: a restart policy and boot behavior are configuration choices, not tmux features.
Keep YouTube’s ingest protocol and settings straight
Use the protocol selected for your stream in Live Control Room; do not apply HLS requirements to a generic RTMP command. If you select HLS, YouTube specifies an HTTPS server URL and notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream.
For HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, no byte-range mode, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Its guide lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio support for HLS. Confirm HLS is actually the chosen ingest protocol before using those requirements. Read YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops
SSH disconnected and you are unsure whether FFmpeg is still running
Reconnect to the VPS and run tmux attach -t youtube. Read the pane output rather than assuming the stream is live. If the session is not found, check whether the VPS is running and whether the session was created under the same user account.
The tmux pane is open, but FFmpeg has exited
Inspect the final error output and any logs you configured. Correct the underlying input, network, command, or ingest issue before restarting FFmpeg. tmux keeps the terminal available for inspection; it does not relaunch the process.
The input source is interrupted
Identify the input protocol and check whether the relevant FFmpeg reconnect options apply to it. Do not assume input reconnect options will recover a YouTube output-side failure. Consult the installed build’s protocol documentation.

YouTube rejects or does not receive the stream
Check the current stream key and ingest details in Live Control Room, and verify that your command’s protocol and media settings match the selected ingest mode. tmux cannot fix an invalid key, codec, bitrate, or source-media configuration.
The stream does not return after a VPS reboot
That is expected if you rely on tmux alone. Configure and enable an appropriate service unit for startup, then verify its status and logs after a controlled restart.
