Use FFmpeg’s periodic progress output to inspect what your encoder is producing, then check YouTube Live Control Room to see how the platform is receiving the stream. These are separate views: FFmpeg’s local bitrate and frame counters cannot prove what YouTube received or what every viewer played.

1. Choose a YouTube target before starting FFmpeg

First identify the resolution, frame rate, and video codec you intend to send. YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists recommended video bitrates by those three factors. The figures below are YouTube recommendations for ingest, not guarantees of network capacity.

Ingest format H.264 video bitrate AV1 or H.265/HEVC video bitrate
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are video-bitrate recommendations; audio and transport overhead add to the total stream traffic. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the stream total. Leave room for network variation rather than treating the video figure as the full upload requirement.

YouTube’s current help page describes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings before going live because platform recommendations can change.

2. Add periodic progress output to FFmpeg

FFmpeg can emit program-friendly key/value progress blocks. Add these options before the output whose encoding progress you want to inspect, while retaining your actual input, mapping, encoding, and YouTube output arguments:

-stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1

-stats_period 1 requests an update cadence of one second, and -progress pipe:1 sends progress to standard output. FFmpeg documents that progress information is written periodically and again at the end; blocks terminate with progress=continue or progress=end. Its ordinary -stats display is another option, with a documented default update period of 0.5 seconds.

FFmpeg options normally apply to the next input or output, so placement matters. If a wrapper or script reads standard output, make sure it can parse the progress blocks and route other logs appropriately. The canonical FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly, and installed builds can differ: check ffmpeg -h full or documentation matching your version if a field or option is unavailable.

3. Read bitrate and frame telemetry carefully

Bitrate

Compare the local bitrate reading against the target for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. The documented br and avg_br fields are defined for FFmpeg’s -vstats video-statistics format, in Kbit/s. Do not assume every FFmpeg build, encoder, output mode, or progress block exposes those same fields in the same way. Inspect the output produced by your installed build and distinguish a momentary reading from a sustained trend by recording timestamps.

A configured bitrate and the bitrate currently reported are not necessarily identical at every instant. For diagnosing a live stream, look for persistent divergence rather than treating one update as a verdict. Local bitrate also does not include every part of the end-to-end delivery path.

Dropped or duplicated frames

Some FFmpeg progress output may include a drop_frames field, but its availability and meaning depend on the exact build and output path. Frame-rate synchronization can itself drop or duplicate frames: cfr can do so to reach the requested constant frame rate, while vfr can drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps. The passthrough mode passes frames with their timestamps. The separate -frame_drop_threshold option concerns how far behind frames can be before being dropped.

A nonzero local counter is not by itself proof of an Internet problem; it may reflect output synchronization behavior. A zero counter does not prove that no packets or frames were lost after FFmpeg sent them. Likewise, -r is not a universal dropped-frame detector: as an output option for encoded video it can duplicate or drop frames to reach a constant frame rate, but in stream copy it only signals a frame rate to the muxer.

4. Check YouTube’s view of the stream

Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health panel, its messages, and the preview. YouTube’s platform-side status is distinct from FFmpeg’s local telemetry; use both rather than assuming either one describes the complete viewer experience.

  1. Before the event, confirm the expected ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate, then compare the intended video bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for that combination.
  2. Start FFmpeg with progress reporting and note timestamps for bitrate or frame-counter changes.
  3. During the event, check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and watch the preview.
  4. If FFmpeg appears stable but YouTube reports a bitrate or connection issue, check outbound bandwidth, shared-network congestion, and connection interruptions.
  5. If both the local output and YouTube preview look poor, inspect FFmpeg errors, CPU load, and the source audio and video as well.

5. Troubleshoot the mismatch you see

  • Local bitrate stays below target and encoding struggles: Check encoder errors and CPU load, then review the source, codec and preset, resolution, and frame rate. The host may not be able to encode that configuration in real time.
  • FFmpeg looks stable but YouTube reports poor health: Check actual outbound bandwidth and whether other traffic is sharing the connection. Make sure upload capacity exceeds the complete stream total, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect the stream configuration.
  • FFmpeg reports dropped or duplicated frames: Review input timestamps and cadence, output -r, and -fps_mode behavior. Do not infer network loss from that counter alone.
  • FFmpeg and YouTube preview look healthy but viewers report problems: Compare reports from different connections and inspect viewer playback or device conditions. Encoder progress cannot diagnose every viewer’s network and playback path.
