Researchers have reported dumping the CXP102064 MechaCon associated with early Fat PlayStation 2 hardware, a significant step for preservation and repair. The work does not mean every PS2 security chip has been reverse engineered, that every console can now be unlocked, or that a hardware optical drive emulator is ready.

What was reverse engineered?

The reported target is the CXP102064, a MechaCon chip used in an early PlayStation 2 hardware context. MechaCon—short for Mechanics Controller—sits between the console and its optical drive: it controls drive mechanics while also performing security-related tasks. The PS2 Developer Wiki lists MagicGate encrypted-file decryption and signature checks, authentication for protected memory cards, DNAS-related functions, console identifier storage, and disc-type and security checks among its responsibilities (PS2 Developer Wiki: MechaCon).

Tom’s Hardware reported on 16 September 2026 that researchers DiscoStarslayer and Libby had spent four years on the effort. The work included chemically removing the chip package to expose its die, optical dumping and analysis, and then a software method for extracting chip data. DiscoStarslayer credited Libby with finding the exploit that enabled extraction from the optical work (Tom’s Hardware, 16 September 2026).

Why this is not a universal PS2 breakthrough

“The PS2 security chip” is shorthand: MechaCon hardware has multiple families and revisions. The Developer Wiki distinguishes the SPC970 family from the later Dragon family. SPC970 variants use firmware stored in one-time-programmable or mask ROM, while Dragon chips have different behavior and integrated functions. The September 2026 report is about the CXP102064/pre-Dragon SPC970 context; it does not establish that every MechaCon version has been dumped or understood.

The Developer Wiki says a method to dump SPC970 firmware, except version 1, was discovered in September 2026. That statement describes a family-level development, not proof that every console layout is supported by every tool or that the reported CXP102064 work covers all hardware revisions.

What the available dumping tools do—and the risks

Different projects have different purposes and compatibility. PS2Ident helps identify console hardware and supports research involving ROM-chip and MechaCon NVRAM dumps; its documentation cautions that model and region data matter and that the full universe of PS2 models is not known (PS2Ident project). A documented SPC970 dumping project is more specific, and its warnings should not be generalized to every extraction method.

SPC970-MechaLIBerator documents a method to dump the 256 KiB pre-Dragon SPC970 ROM window. It reports validation on particular hardware and layouts, including SCPH-18000, a CXP102064-era board, and SCPH-39001, while explicitly excluding the earliest SCPH-10000/CXP101064 worker layout. Its documentation warns that low-level MechaCon and NVRAM writes can corrupt console data or require hardware-level repair, especially on unsupported hardware or if the process is interrupted (SPC970-MechaLIBerator project).

  • Identify the exact console model and board layout before treating a method as compatible.
  • Distinguish read-only identification or capture from procedures that write to MechaCon or NVRAM.
  • Follow the specific project documentation and backup guidance; an unsupported or interrupted low-level operation can cause damage.

How this differs from MechaPwn

MechaPwn is a separate software modification path for Dragon-family MechaCon systems. Its documentation limits compatibility to SCPH-500xx and later and warns that EEPROM data is factory- and model-specific, recommending a backup before experimentation (ConsoleMods Wiki: MechaPwn). That compatibility does not show that the new CXP102064 dump applies to Dragon chips, or that the newer extraction work is the same as MechaPwn’s update-behavior exploit.

Does the dump make a PS2 optical drive emulator possible?

Not by itself, based on the report. A participant quoted by Tom’s Hardware says the dumps do not contain enough information for a hardware optical drive emulator. The participant describes a possible MechaCon-replacement modchip that would still rely on the console’s DSP to read discs, but that is an assessment of a potential direction—not a confirmed product or roadmap.

A firmware dump is valuable technical material, but it is not automatically a complete replacement for the chip or a ready-to-use device. The report presents preservation, repair, and emulation as possible beneficiaries; it does not announce a consumer product that bypasses the original drive.

Why the work matters for preservation

Because MechaCon handles both drive control and security functions, understanding its firmware can help researchers document how the console operates and support future repair and emulation work. The PS2’s history includes modchips that bypassed copy protection and regional restrictions, as well as software or disc-based alternatives such as cheat discs and Swap Magic. That history provides context, but the September 2026 report concerns chip analysis and firmware extraction rather than a newly released consumer bypass product (Rodrigo Copetti, “Anti-Piracy and Homebrew | PlayStation 2 Architecture”).

For ordinary owners, the practical takeaway is limited: the breakthrough makes a previously difficult piece of PS2 hardware more accessible to study, but it is not a general-purpose procedure to try on an unverified console. PS2Ident and the documented dumper projects are specialist research tools, and their compatibility and risk profiles differ.
