Short answer: You generally cannot change the files in a concat playlist and expect a running FFmpeg process to reload it. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer as reading a prepared list in sequence, not as a live playlist control. To switch videos while publishing continues, keep FFmpeg’s output process running and change the media supplied to it upstream—then validate that the sources, streams, and timestamps work together.
Can you change an FFmpeg playlist while it is running?
Not reliably by editing the concat script. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a script and presents its listed files in sequence; its documentation does not describe detecting edits to a script that a running process has already opened. Treat a concat script as the input sequence for a process, not as a live control panel. FFmpeg documentation
That distinction matters: changing the list on disk is not the same as changing the media already flowing through FFmpeg. If you need a different video without stopping the publishing process, put selection or scheduling before FFmpeg’s continuous input instead of relying on a live reload of the concat file.
Use a concat playlist for a fixed sequence
For a sequence you can prepare in advance, create a text file with one file entry per input, then pass it to FFmpeg using the concat demuxer. The basic pattern is:

This is a pattern, not a complete YouTube command: the available sources do not establish current YouTube ingest settings or whether any particular reconnect or restart behavior preserves a YouTube event.

Check compatibility before using stream copy
The concat demuxer expects compatible inputs. FFmpeg states that files must have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps using file durations, so an incorrect duration can produce artifacts. Do not assume that placing unlike files in one script will make them compatible.

- Compare the streams and codecs in each file, as well as their time bases.
- Check that each file’s duration is accurate; timestamp adjustment depends on it.
- If dimensions, codecs, time bases, or audio/video layouts differ, normalize the inputs or use a filtering and re-encoding workflow appropriate to the sources.
Keep publishing open while changing what plays
For live selection, separate the scheduler from the publishing process. An upstream producer or scheduler chooses the next video and supplies FFmpeg with one continuous media stream; FFmpeg remains responsible for publishing that stream to the destination. This is an engineering pattern based on FFmpeg’s input/output pipeline, not a documented concat live-reload feature or a universal command recipe.
- Choose the switching layer. Use a producer or scheduler that can select the next source while maintaining a continuous feed to FFmpeg.
- Keep the publisher’s output process in place. Avoid treating edits to the concat script as a signal to FFmpeg to switch inputs.
- Validate transitions with the actual media. Test stream layout, codecs, timestamps, and audio/video continuity. Normalize or re-encode where required rather than assuming stream copy can reconcile differences.
- Test the complete destination workflow. Confirm behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and target streaming setup before relying on it for a live broadcast.
The exact scheduler, handoff mechanism, and output command depend on the source files and workflow. The cited FFmpeg material does not establish a single supported recipe for dynamically replacing YouTube stream content while preserving an event or uninterrupted viewer playback.

Choose the right FFmpeg concat method

Stream copy
-c copy avoids decoding and encoding, which can make a compatible fixed-sequence workflow more efficient. But it cannot apply filters, and it may fail if the target container needs information missing from the source. Stream copy does not normalize mismatched inputs. FFmpeg command-line documentation

FIFO output
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer separates encoding and muxing with a queue and offers configurable handling for certain output problems. It operates on the output side: it does not choose the next video, change the input playlist, or make a concat script reload dynamically. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation
Test the installed FFmpeg version and the actual files
Online FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision. If your installed build is older, consult its local documentation and test the exact command against your files before using it in a live workflow. FFmpeg documentation
For YouTube-specific ingest, event, or reconnection behavior, check current YouTube Live documentation directly. The FFmpeg sources cited here do not verify whether a particular switch, restart, or recovery method preserves a YouTube event or uninterrupted playback.
Troubleshoot playlist switching
- Editing the script does not change the current video: the concat demuxer is not documented as reloading an open playlist. Use a scheduler or producer upstream of a continuous FFmpeg input, or prepare the sequence before starting.
- Artifacts appear at a file boundary: check input compatibility and file durations, since timestamp adjustment depends on duration. Normalize sources or use an appropriate filtering and re-encoding workflow if their streams differ.
- Stream copy fails: verify that the sources and target container are compatible.
-c copycannot filter or reconcile incompatible inputs. - Output-side buffering is mistaken for playlist control: FIFO queues output and can handle certain output problems; it does not select a new input file.
- A YouTube event disconnects or playback is interrupted: do not assume a specific FFmpeg switch or FIFO setting guarantees continuity. Verify current platform behavior and test your complete setup.
- A command behaves differently on your machine: compare your installed FFmpeg version with the documentation you are using and consult the local documentation for older builds.
