To run prerecorded videos continuously on YouTube with a still image between them, send a live feed from an encoder such as OBS: create a YouTube stream, play a looping playlist, and place an image over the video when needed. OBS documents the playlist and image sources separately; its documented controls do not automatically insert an image after each playlist item. For hands-free intervals, combine each video and still-image interval into a rendered sequence, or use an automation workflow you have verified.
How the setup works
YouTube receives an outgoing audio-and-video feed from an encoder. You create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio, then connect OBS using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. OBS plays the videos; an Image source supplies the still. The computer running OBS and its internet connection must remain available for this local setup to continue.
First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, so enable it before the time you plan to go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Prepare the image and video sequence
Choose how the image will appear between videos
OBS’s VLC Video source can play and loop a playlist, and its Image source can show a still image. The documented controls do not establish a built-in setting to insert a chosen image interval automatically between every two playlist items. For a dependable unattended sequence, either render each video and its following still interval together into a single media file, or use a separately verified automation workflow. Otherwise, an operator can toggle the image source manually.

This is a limitation of the documented workflow, not a claim that OBS cannot be extended. Test the transitions before relying on them unattended.
Prepare your files
- Put the videos in the order you want them to play. If order matters, leave Shuffle Playlist off.
- Decide how long the still should stay on screen and whether audio should continue, fade, or stop during that interval. Include the intended audio behavior when rendering a combined sequence.
- Use an image sized and composed for your output canvas. OBS supports common image formats including PNG, JPEG/JPG, BMP, TGA, and GIF.
- Only use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast. Having a copy of a video does not by itself establish live-streaming rights.
Create the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create an encoder stream, or open Manage → Schedule stream to schedule a watch page.
- In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots or publish it. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not leave setup until the planned start time.
Configure OBS to play videos and show the image
- Install VLC before adding the playlist source. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies installing 64-bit VLC. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the video files in the intended order.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the sequence must stay in order. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat it. VLC installation and playlist controls are covered in the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
- Add an Image source and select the still file. In the Sources list, place it above the VLC source so it covers the video when visible. Resize it to fit the canvas. OBS explains source layering in its Sources guide and image setup in its Image Source guide.
- For manual intervals, toggle the image source on over the video and off when playback should show again. For unattended transitions, use the combined rendered media sequence or an automation workflow that you have tested; the source stack alone does not schedule transitions between playlist items.
- Open OBS stream settings and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Choose the RTMPS server option when available. Keep the key private and verify the destination in YouTube Live Control Room before starting output.
Choose encoder settings and test the feed
Match the outgoing stream to a stable upload connection; YouTube recommends testing upload speed, using representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. For straightforward SDR streaming, YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). It recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube Help says: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder. All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A 24/7 broadcast runs beyond that threshold, so do not count on the entire continuous stream being saved as one complete archive. If retaining the recording matters, plan a separate capture or segmentation method and check YouTube’s current behavior.
