Keep OBS connected to YouTube and change the video inside OBS. For individual files, use Media Source; for a sequence, use VLC Video. Switch scenes or let the playlist advance without ending the YouTube event or restarting the encoder. The connection can remain live, but a brief blank, frozen frame, or audio change is still possible, so rehearse the exact files and transitions before going live.

How the switch works

YouTube receives one encoder feed through the stream URL and stream key. OBS determines what appears in that feed. Changing the active OBS scene changes the content being sent; it does not require a new YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder setup is documented at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming, and OBS explains scenes and sources in its Overview Guide.

Here, “without interrupting” means keeping the same live encoder session and YouTube event active while changing the program content. It is not a guarantee of a flawless, frame-perfect handoff. File loading, decoding, audio routing, and computer performance can affect what viewers see and hear. YouTube and OBS recommend testing; neither promises that every scene switch will be artifact-free.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Create the event and encoder connection. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. The key is the credential OBS uses to send the feed to your YouTube event. Keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  2. Keep the same connection for the whole program. Start streaming from OBS and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room. Do not end the YouTube event or stop the encoder simply to change videos.
  3. Preview and check stream health. Before announcing the stream, verify that the picture and audio reach YouTube as expected. YouTube’s guidance covers encoder setup and stream-health checks in YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.

Choose how OBS will play the videos

One file at a time: Media Source

In OBS, add a Media Source and select the local video file. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; format support can depend on the system and file, so test your actual media. In the source properties, choose whether playback should restart when the source becomes active, whether it should loop, and whether it should hide when playback ends. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

If you enable Close file when inactive, OBS releases the file while the source is hidden, but OBS warns that showing it again can cause a short delay while the file reloads. If you need a quick switch, test with this option in the state you plan to use and consider keeping the next source ready rather than relying on a cold reload.

An ordered sequence: VLC Video

For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and add the files in the desired order. The source offers loop and shuffle controls; verify end-of-file and next-item behavior in a rehearsal rather than assuming it will match your intended schedule. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Details are in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Use Media Source when you want to control individual files and their appearance manually. Use VLC Video when you want a playlist to advance through its items. Local playback and decoding performance depend on the machine and files, so neither option should be treated as tested until you have run your own rehearsal.

Switch videos with scenes

  1. Create a scene for each program segment. In OBS, add a scene for each video or segment and place its Media Source or other intended content in that scene. Give scenes clear names such as “Opening,” “Video 1,” and “Break.”
  2. Set the transition. Use OBS’s scene transition controls to choose how the active scene changes. A cut is a direct scene change; other configured transitions may take time to complete. OBS describes scene switching and transitions in its Overview Guide.
  3. Switch the active scene, not the YouTube event. Select the next scene in OBS, or assign and use scene-switching hotkeys if you need hands-free control. The encoder remains connected while OBS changes its output.
  4. Rehearse the actual sequence. Test the same files, computer, source settings, audio, transition timing, and hotkeys you will use live. Preview in Live Control Room and check the watch page and stream health before relying on the setup.

If the next scene’s file is unloaded while hidden, it may need time to reload when activated. A holding scene with the next source already prepared can make manual segment changes easier to control, but still test the handoff under the conditions of the real broadcast.

Check audio and viewer playback

Test audio across each source and scene. Confirm whether the outgoing audio stops, the incoming audio starts, and any background music or microphone audio remains at the intended level. The correct arrangement depends on how the scenes and sources are built; there is no single audio-mixing setup that works for every layout. YouTube recommends testing audio and motion similar to the planned event.

A viewer may pause or rewind with YouTube DVR and therefore see an earlier segment after you have switched scenes. That viewer being behind the live edge does not by itself mean the encoder stopped. See YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot a bad handoff

  • Black screen or delayed video: Check that the intended source is visible in the active scene and that the file is playable. If OBS closes the file while inactive, the documented reload delay may be the cause. Test with the source kept loaded or prepare it before switching.
  • Frozen or stuttering picture: Check whether the file is still decoding and whether the computer can play it reliably. Rehearse using the same files and settings; a successful local preview alone does not establish how the full live setup will behave.
  • Audio disappears or overlaps: Check the audio behavior and levels for both outgoing and incoming sources, then test the transition in a private or otherwise appropriate rehearsal. Do not assume a scene change will mix audio the way you intend.
  • Hotkey switches to the wrong content: Review the assigned scene-switching hotkeys and rehearse the order. Clear scene names help prevent selecting the wrong segment during a live program.
  • Some viewers say the new video has not started: Ask whether they have paused or rewound. DVR viewers can watch behind the live edge even while the broadcast continues.
  • YouTube reports a stream problem: Check the encoder connection and Live Control Room’s stream-health information, rather than treating every playback issue as a scene-switch problem.

End the event only when the program is finished

When the broadcast is over, end the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as YouTube directs. A scene change is a content change; ending the event is a separate action. YouTube’s current guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming for the platform’s stream guidance.
