To compare two 24/7 YouTube streams fairly, compare their Estimated ad revenue in YouTube Studio for the same dates and the same scope—live streams, replays, or both. If they were available for different lengths of time, show both total ad revenue and a calculated ad-revenue-per-stream-hour figure. You need access to the channel’s Analytics; public views and CPM figures cannot establish another channel’s ad earnings.
Choose the right revenue metric
Use Estimated ad revenue when the question is specifically how much each stream earned from ads. YouTube’s broader Estimated revenue can include YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, so it is not an apples-to-apples measure of ad earnings. - Estimated ad revenue: the central measure for this comparison.
- RPM: creator revenue per 1,000 views after revenue share. It may include sources beyond ads, so it is not a substitute for Estimated ad revenue.
- CPM and playback-based CPM: advertiser costs, not the creator’s take-home revenue. CPM is based on ad impressions; playback-based CPM is based on playbacks that included an ad. A playback can show multiple ads, so the measures differ.
Do not multiply public views by CPM to estimate what a stream earned. A view is not necessarily an ad-bearing playback, and CPM does not represent the creator’s share.
Compare both streams in YouTube Studio
- Open Analytics and set the same date range. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and choose matching start and end dates for both streams. The Revenue tab can show earnings at channel or video level. Use Advanced Mode when you need to compare videos, groups, or periods, select metrics, or export a report. YouTube documents these options in Advanced Mode and its Analytics overview.
- Select Estimated ad revenue. Compare the two stream videos or matched groups. Add views, estimated monetized playbacks, ad impressions, and watch time as context where available. These metrics describe different things; none should be treated as a substitute for ad revenue.
- Match the content scope. Decide whether the comparison covers live viewing only, replays only, or both. Apply the same choice to each stream. YouTube documents a Live filter for breaking down ad revenue from live streams and live replays in its live-stream monetization guidance.
- Export and preserve the comparison details. Record the date range, selected videos or groups, live/replay scope, and whether the displayed figures are estimates. Include the time zone if it affects how you define the window. Advanced Mode supports report export.
Account for different stream run times
When one stream was available for more hours than the other, compare the total and a time-normalized figure. Calculate each stream’s ad revenue per stream-hour as:

Estimated ad revenue ÷ hours available
This is an analytical calculation, not a standard YouTube Analytics metric. Define “hours available” consistently—for example, the duration each stream was actually live during the selected dates—and disclose the basis. The total answers which stream generated more ad revenue in that period; the per-hour figure helps distinguish a longer run from a higher hourly result.
Read ad delivery metrics carefully
YouTube defines estimated monetized playbacks as video playbacks with at least one ad impression. Ad impressions count individual ads. A stream can have views without ads because ads are off, the content is not advertiser-friendly, a suitable ad is unavailable, or other audience, geography, and ad-serving factors affect delivery. Use views, monetized playbacks, and ad impressions to explain a result—not to infer earnings from views alone. Details are in YouTube’s metric definitions.

Live monetization may include pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads when enabled, but YouTube states that “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its guidance also says ads are turned off for embedded live streams when autoplay is enabled on an external site. These factors can make two streams with similar audiences produce different ad results.
Label estimates and allow for adjustments
Recent revenue figures can change. YouTube says estimated revenue may be adjusted for invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, and certain ad campaign types. Adjustments occur after one week and in the middle of the following month, when earnings are finalized. Mark recent figures as estimates and, when a settled comparison matters, rerun it after that adjustment period. YouTube says finalized earnings appear in Analytics after payments are added to AdSense for YouTube, typically between the 7th and 12th day of the following month. Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Comparing unlike date windows: Set the same dates for both streams and state the time zone where relevant.
- Mixing live and replay revenue: Use the Live breakdown where relevant and apply the same live/replay scope to both.
- Treating total estimated revenue as ad revenue: Select Estimated ad revenue rather than the broader revenue total.
- Using views or CPM to claim earnings: Use the channel’s Estimated ad revenue report; public views and advertiser-cost metrics do not reveal creator ad revenue.
- Ignoring unequal availability: Report totals and the clearly labeled calculated ad revenue per stream-hour.
- Comparing unsettled estimates as final: Identify the figures as estimates and rerun after YouTube’s adjustment and finalization period when appropriate.
