You can keep a YouTube live stream running while mid-roll ads are offered by turning on monetization in YouTube Studio and choosing automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. The broadcast does not have to stop for an ad break, but YouTube does not guarantee an ad for every viewer—or uninterrupted viewing for everyone.
How to set up live mid-roll ads
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit → Monetization and switch monetization to On.
- Under live ad settings, select Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. For Scheduled, choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- If you use Automatic, you can select Delay ads in Live Control Room before an important moment. This pauses automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes and shows a five-second countdown before they resume. Manually placed breaks can still appear during the delay.
To reuse a default on future streams, monetized channels without rights management can set channel-level mid-roll defaults in Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s help page describes the default as On with automatic medium; channels with rights management currently do not have channel-level settings. YouTube’s live monetization guidance is the reference for the current controls.
Choose the ad mode that fits your stream

YouTube describes side-by-side mid-rolls as an option for eligible streams that can show an ad next to the stream with less disruption. It is not guaranteed for every stream, and streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance for the qualification.
What viewers experience during a break
The live broadcast can stay active while ads are offered. YouTube says, “If no ad runs, viewers will continue to watch your live stream.” Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching; those who see one rejoin when it ends or they skip it. So a 24/7 stream can remain live, but you cannot promise every viewer will see uninterrupted content, and you cannot force YouTube to serve an ad at every interval. YouTube Help also says it shows mid-roll ads at natural breakpoints during a live stream.

Scheduled ad intervals are repeating intervals, not a separate 24/7 mode or a wall-clock schedule. YouTube’s stream-settings guidance explains that scheduled streams can appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers may opt into notifications; it does not establish a special ad mode for continuous broadcasts. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers encoder and mobile streams, not webcam streams.

Use Automatic for hands-off timing
Automatic is YouTube’s recommended choice when you want the platform to seek natural pauses. If a high-value moment is approaching, use Delay ads in Live Control Room before it begins; remember that the control does not hold back manually inserted breaks.

Use Scheduled for a predictable rhythm
Choose one of the five available intervals when consistency matters more than having each break match the content. Do not describe a 12-minute interval, for example, as a guaranteed ad every 12 minutes: the setting controls timing opportunities, not whether an ad is served to each viewer.
Use Manual when someone is operating live
Manual placement gives the operator control over when to insert a break, but it is not a set-and-forget option. YouTube documents Elgato Stream Deck with its YouTube plugin as one way to insert ads. A Stream Deck is optional and pertains to manual insertion; it is not required for automatic or interval-based scheduled mid-rolls.

What the published revenue figure does—and does not—mean
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on live automatic mid-roll ads versus channels that did not. The comparison was published in January 2024, covered 207 countries, and is a historical average—not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. YouTube’s live monetization guidance gives the comparison and its scope.
