To insert a mid-roll ad break manually, open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn monetization on, set the live mid-roll option to Manual, then select a break while the stream is live. YouTube documents this workflow for live streams generally; it does not describe a separate procedure for streams that run 24/7.
Set the stream’s mid-roll mode to Manual
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s Edit → Monetization settings and make sure monetization is On.
- In the live ad settings, choose Manual for mid-roll ads and save the setting if prompted.
These are YouTube’s documented Live Control Room controls. The stream’s continuous or 24/7 duration does not change the documented steps.
Insert a break while the stream is live
When you want to offer a mid-roll opportunity, use the manual ad-break control in Live Control Room while the stream is live. You must trigger each break yourself. YouTube states: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.”
A break creates an opportunity for an ad; it does not guarantee that every viewer will see one. Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the stream, while viewers who receive one return when the ad ends or they skip it.

Choose between manual, automatic, and scheduled breaks

YouTube says manual or scheduled selection may have lower earnings potential than automatic mid-rolls. In January 2024, YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-rolls compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. That is YouTube’s comparison across those groups—not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Optional shortcut: Stream Deck
YouTube identifies Elgato Stream Deck with its YouTube plugin as an optional way to insert ads. It is not required: the Live Control Room provides the documented manual workflow. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a particular Stream Deck model as necessary.
