You need to solve two separate things: have the device reopen the YouTube stream after restart, and have its browser or app allow playback with sound. Set up the first through the device’s startup options, then test the second—because YouTube’s Autoplay setting controls what happens after a video ends, not whether YouTube launches at boot. Whether sound starts unattended depends on the device, browser, account, and current playback policies.
What “automatic after reboot” means
A radio stream can be a live broadcast or a playlist of videos. They behave differently: a live broadcast may end or become unavailable, while a playlist can advance through its videos. Neither is guaranteed to resume seamlessly after a device restarts.
There are three separate steps: the operating system starts or signs in to the device, the device opens YouTube or the stream page, and the app or browser permits audible playback. Configuring one does not automatically configure the others.
Set the device to reopen YouTube or the stream page
On the device that will play the stream, use its supported startup behavior to open the YouTube app or a saved browser page after restart or sign-in. On a desktop, this usually means setting the browser to open a specific page or pages at startup. The exact controls vary by operating system and browser version, so use the current instructions for the device you have rather than assuming one menu path works everywhere.

A Raspberry Pi forum discussion from 2020 describes adding a YouTube address to Chromium’s “Open a specific page or set of pages” startup option. Treat that as a community example, not current, universal setup guidance: Raspberry Pi Forums: Get youtube to autoplay in Chromium.
For an unattended device, account for sign-in as well as startup. If the device waits at a login screen, it may not open the browser until someone signs in. A saved page also cannot guarantee that the broadcast will still be available at the same address after reboot.
Understand YouTube Autoplay and browser sound autoplay
YouTube Autoplay is for the next video
YouTube’s Autoplay switch determines whether another related video plays when the current video ends. YouTube documents controls on computers, mobile devices and TVs, and notes that the setting can differ from one device to another. Check it on the device that will actually play the stream. It does not launch YouTube after a reboot. See YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
A browser may open the page but keep it silent or paused
Browser autoplay policy is a separate layer. Chrome allows muted autoplay, but playback with sound may depend on prior interaction with the site or, on desktop, the user’s media engagement with sites. That engagement is based on the individual’s past media use, so results can differ between profiles and devices. Chromium’s guidance is to provide a Play control when autoplay is rejected—not to assume playback succeeded just because the page loaded. Read Chrome’s autoplay policy and the Chromium autoplay guidance.

- Driver-less design for Windows 8.1 / 10 (32/64 bit) or up, Mac OS 10.9 or up, and Android 6.0 or up operating systems, Chrome OS
- Compatible with Raspberry Pi Zero, Raspberry Pi Zero W, Raspberry Pi Zero WH, Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, Raspberry Pi Zero 2 WH, Raspberry Pi Zero 2 WHC
- Built-in DC power port, supports 5V power adapter, a power cable included; It only powers HUB and NOT the host; It charges the added USB device such as keyboard & mouse
- It has limited Android compatibility. Android users, before you buy, be sure to look if the device has a (grayed out) "Ethernet" menu in Settings under WIRELESS & NETWORKS. Most probably it will just work then
Chrome’s developer documentation lists chrome.exe --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required as a flag for locally testing a site as though the user were strongly engaged. It is a developer-testing option, not a reliable general-purpose fix for consumer YouTube playback or operating-system startup restrictions.
Test the complete restart sequence
- On the device you intend to use, configure its supported startup behavior to open the YouTube app or the chosen stream page after restart or sign-in.
- Check YouTube Autoplay on that same device if you expect a playlist to advance when a video ends.
- Restart the device while signed in, then confirm it has a working network connection.
- Check separately whether the page opened, whether the intended live stream or playlist is available, and whether sound began. A page that opens successfully may still be paused or silent.
- If the page opens but does not play, try Play once and review the browser’s playback or site settings. Test again after browser or operating-system updates, since unattended behavior may change.
For a playlist embedded on a page
If you build a page with YouTube’s embedded player, the IFrame Player API’s autoplay=1 parameter requests initial playback after the player loads; its default is 0. The player documentation also covers playlist and loop parameters. These settings affect an embedded player only: they do not make the operating system launch a browser after reboot or override browser autoplay policy. YouTube also says enabling autoplay causes playback data collection and sharing when the page loads. See YouTube Embedded Players and Player Parameters.

Choose an approach for your device and stream
| Approach | What it addresses | What it cannot guarantee | Maintenance to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device startup plus a saved YouTube page | Reopening the app or page after restart or sign-in, if the device supports that setup | Audible autoplay, continued availability of a live broadcast, or successful sign-in | Startup settings, login state, browser or OS changes, and network access |
| YouTube Autoplay | Playing another related video after the current video ends | Launching YouTube after reboot or overriding browser sound policy | Check the setting on each device; preferences may differ |
Embedded player with autoplay=1 |
Requesting initial playback when an embedded player loads | Launching the device or browser after reboot, or bypassing playback policy | Keep the page, player parameters, browser, and content available |
Troubleshoot common failures
- The device restarts but YouTube does not open: The startup behavior may run only after sign-in, or the browser may not be configured to reopen the saved page. Check the device’s supported startup and login settings.
- The page opens, but playback is paused: Browser policy may require a user gesture. Press Play, check site playback settings, and retest. Do not treat the Chrome testing flag as a universal consumer remedy.
- Playback starts but stops at the end of a video: Check YouTube Autoplay on that device. It applies to the next related video, and does not ensure that a live stream restarts.
- The stream page opens but the broadcast is unavailable: The saved destination may refer to a live broadcast that has ended or changed. Confirm the current destination; a playlist is a different option, not a guarantee of continuous live availability.
- It works on one device but not another: Startup behavior, YouTube Autoplay preferences, browser policy, sign-in, and network conditions can differ. Verify each layer on the device that needs to play.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than to make a home device reopen YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera broadcasting. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
