Both OBS and a cloud service can send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live around the clock. OBS gives you direct control but requires a computer, reliable upload internet, and monitoring for the entire broadcast. A cloud service runs the playlist remotely, so your computer can be off, while you still need to manage the YouTube stream, source files, rights, and any interruptions. Choose OBS if you want to operate the encoder yourself; choose cloud if keeping a local machine online is the problem you need to solve.
What “playlist” means in a 24/7 stream
Here, a playlist is a sequence of prerecorded videos that an encoder plays continuously into a single YouTube Live broadcast. It is not the rolling technical media playlist used by YouTube’s HLS transport protocol; the latter has separate segment and latency requirements. For an ordinary prerecorded-video broadcast, the main choice is whether the encoder runs on your computer or in a cloud service.
In either case, the encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists software and hardware encoders and identifies Gyre as a cloud tool for continuous prerecorded streams. The basic encoder connection is described in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
OBS or cloud: which should you choose?
| Consideration | OBS on your computer | Cloud playlist service |
|---|---|---|
| What runs the broadcast? | Your computer runs OBS and sends the feed to YouTube. | A provider’s cloud system sends the feed; your personal computer does not need to stay online. This is a vendor-described workflow, not an independently tested reliability comparison. |
| What you operate | You manage the computer, internet connection, playlist, monitoring, and recovery. | You manage the uploaded media and YouTube connection; the provider handles some broadcasting operations. YouTube-side interruptions, stream-key errors, and bad source media can still cause problems. |
| Control | Direct control over the local encoder and files. | Setup and controls depend on the provider. |
| Archive considerations | A long broadcast may not be saved in full by YouTube. | The same YouTube archive limitation applies; moving the encoder to the cloud does not change it. |
| Rights obligations | You remain responsible for having rights to everything in the playlist. | The same rights rules apply; the service does not grant permission to stream the content. |
There is no like-for-like performance test or verified current price comparison here. Before choosing an external provider, check its current pricing, storage and upload limits, output quality, recovery behavior, and supported destinations.

Before you start: YouTube eligibility, media, and rights
Enable live streaming in advance
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. The minimum age for live streaming is 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and live streaming tips.
Use media you are entitled to stream
You need the necessary rights for all playlist material, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether your channel also needs to be allowlisted in Content ID—having a license alone may not prevent an automated live interruption. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and livestream terms and conditions.

Decide how replays will be preserved
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. If preserving the complete program matters, do not treat a single continuous 24/7 broadcast as your archive plan. Consider a separate recording workflow or shorter broadcasts that fit your publishing needs. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.
How to run a 24/7 playlist with OBS
- Prepare and test the playlist. Arrange your local video files in the intended order and check that their audio and picture play correctly. Confirm that you have rights to every item, including music. OBS setup and playlist controls can vary by version; YouTube’s encoder guide covers the YouTube connection, not a universal playlist configuration.
- Enable the channel for live streaming. Verify the channel and complete YouTube’s live-stream activation before the day you plan to go live. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast and retrieve its displayed stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it unnecessarily, or include it in a public recording.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings, then configure the local output and playlist playback. YouTube’s encoder setup page explains the destination credentials; consult the OBS documentation for version-specific playlist and output controls.
- Check upload capacity and preview. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Preview the feed in Live Control Room, confirm that audio and video are present, and monitor stream health before relying on it for a long broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Keep the local operation running. The computer running OBS, its power, and the internet connection must remain available while it encodes and sends the stream. Plan how you will monitor the broadcast and recover if OBS, the computer, the network, or a source file fails.
- Preserve a separate copy if needed. Make an independent recording or use shorter broadcasts if the replay must be retained; YouTube does not promise to capture a stream longer than 12 hours.
OBS is the practical route when you want local control and can leave a suitable computer and connection running. The trade-off is operational: a shutdown, sleep, OBS crash, internet outage, or playlist issue can interrupt the feed, and someone needs to notice and address it.

How to use a cloud playlist service
- Choose a provider and verify its current terms. Check storage limits, supported quality, billing, recovery behavior, and that it supports YouTube Live for prerecorded continuous streams. YouTube lists Gyre for this use case; provider features and commercial terms can change.
- Upload and arrange your videos. Add the source files to the provider and build the playback order or loop there. Check the provider’s supported formats and storage allowance before uploading.
- Connect the YouTube destination. Create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room, then supply the displayed stream URL and stream key in the provider’s YouTube setup. Keep the key private.
- Preview before leaving it unattended. Confirm audio and video in YouTube Live Control Room and monitor stream health. Cloud hosting removes the need for your own computer to run the encoder; it does not remove YouTube ingest issues, incorrect credentials, rights enforcement, or source-file problems.
- Plan for the replay separately. The same 12-hour archive caution applies to cloud-originated broadcasts. A cloud encoder does not guarantee YouTube will save a long session.
Cloud services shift some broadcast operation away from your own machine. They also introduce a provider dependency, so check what controls and recovery support the particular service offers. Provider descriptions are not a substitute for independent reliability testing.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, any live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days, and whether first-time enablement has finished. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the selected broadcast. If the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder or cloud service.
- The feed is unstable: Check the available upload bandwidth against the stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect network stability and the encoder or provider’s stream-health status.
- Audio or video is missing: Preview in Live Control Room, then check the source file and the encoder’s selected audio/video inputs. Verify several points in the playlist, not just the opening clip.
- A licensed song interrupts the broadcast: A license may not prevent Content ID matching. Contact the rights owner about allowlisting the channel and review YouTube’s copyright notice before restarting.
- The full replay is missing: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited. Use a separate recording or plan shorter sessions when a complete replay is important.
- The playlist stops advancing: Check that the next source file is accessible and playable, and inspect the playlist configuration. With OBS, also check that the computer has not slept or stopped running the encoder; with a cloud service, check its job status and provider-specific recovery information.
Cost and operating trade-offs
OBS avoids a cloud playlist subscription but is not operationally cost-free: the computer and network have to stay on, and you bear the monitoring and recovery work. A cloud service charges for moving that broadcast operation to a provider; compare the provider’s current price and included storage, quality, recovery, and destination support rather than assuming all plans are equivalent. For an estimate of local-computer versus cloud costs, use the cloud vs PC cost calculator. To estimate transfer time before uploading, use the upload-time calculator.
