This works best for live gameplay from that PC. A continuous loop of prerecorded gameplay is a different setup: it does not provide live gameplay capture, and you need the rights to stream the footage.
What an always-on gaming stream requires
A spare PC can encode and send a live broadcast while it is powered on and connected to the internet. It still needs a source that produces video: for live gameplay, that is usually a game running on the PC, captured in OBS. As YouTube explains, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” YouTube’s encoder guide also describes cloud streaming of prerecorded videos as a separate 24/7 use case.
Plan for continuous operation rather than assuming that a computer which can play a game can also stream it indefinitely. The game, OBS compositing and video encoding all use system resources. The PC also depends on uninterrupted local power and internet, and a person or alerting setup to notice failures. OBS notes that compatible system requirements do not guarantee a particular streaming quality; demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS system requirements
Check YouTube eligibility first
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.

Set up OBS and connect the YouTube stream
- Install OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. The wizard considers your intended use, hardware and network conditions. Treat its suggested output as a starting point, not a guarantee that a long stream will remain stable. Follow the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Add and arrange sources. Add the game capture source that fits your game, then add any overlays, media or other intended visuals. Add the relevant audio sources and speak or play sound to confirm that the OBS audio meters respond. Check that the preview shows the expected image and that no private windows or notifications are visible.
- Create or select a YouTube stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as a password and address for the stream; keep it private, and do not show it in a broadcast or share it with viewers. Use YouTube’s encoder instructions and stream settings guidance for the current Studio flow.
- Choose a sustainable output profile. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate and using RTMPS. Its current encoder guidance lists supported codecs and setting recommendations; use those recommendations for the codec and output you select. Start conservatively, then test at the resolution and frame rate you intend to keep. OBS cautions that actual encoding capacity depends on the hardware, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. - Run a short test before making the stream unattended. Start the stream, check the YouTube preview and watch page, confirm moving video and balanced audio, and review YouTube’s stream-health information. If you plan to preserve a local recording, confirm that the file is being created and growing. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring before and during a broadcast; OBS also encourages a short test. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and the OBS Quick Start Guide.
Do not leave the stream unattended until the exact game, scenes and output settings you plan to use have passed a test. A complex game or scene can behave differently from an idle desktop preview.
Keep the spare PC stable during a long stream
Leave performance headroom
A game can run smoothly by itself while the combined game-and-stream workload overloads the PC. If OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble, reduce game load or frame rate, simplify scenes, or lower the output resolution. Hardware encoding may help when suitable hardware is available, though older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality. OBS explains these trade-offs in its performance guidance and hardware-encoding guidance.

Investigate dropped frames and disconnections
OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections generally point to a network problem between the PC and the ingest server. Check whether the connection is stable and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable; a setting that exceeds what the connection can reliably upload can interrupt the broadcast. Plan for power and failure recovery
A desktop UPS is an optional way to bridge some short power interruptions if keeping the PC running matters. It is a continuity measure, not a YouTube requirement, and it will not fix an internet outage or OBS failure. No PC or OBS setup can be assumed to recover from every crash, restart, power loss or network interruption; arrange monitoring or alerts and decide who will respond.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on a single broadcast longer than that being archived in full. If preserving the whole session matters, check YouTube’s current behavior and make a separate local recording plan. YouTube also recommends checking that local archive files continue to grow and confirming that the event is accessible during the stream. See YouTube’s encoder guide and live-streaming tips.
Live gameplay versus looping prerecorded gameplay
OBS on a spare PC is the direct fit when you want to broadcast gameplay as it happens, with live control over the game and scenes. A loop of prerecorded gameplay instead broadcasts uploaded footage. Confirm you have the rights to the footage and any included music or other material; owning a game does not by itself establish that every recording or soundtrack is cleared for continuous rebroadcast. Consider how the archive and long-running broadcast should be managed under YouTube’s current rules. These approaches serve different goals rather than being interchangeable ways to capture a live game.

Troubleshooting common problems
