To make a YouTube radio livestream with a waveform visualizer, create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Studio, send it an audio feed and video from OBS, and use an OBS Browser source to display a visualizer that reacts to the audio. Test the audio and motion before going live, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and confirm that you have rights to broadcast every track and visual.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
  • An encoder such as OBS, with the radio audio source and a video scene.
  • A stable upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you choose.
  • Permission to use the music and visual material in a live broadcast.

A radio stream still sends video to YouTube. That video can be a station image, a loop, or an audio-reactive visualizer.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
  2. Choose the Stream tab for a new encoder stream, or open Manage to schedule a broadcast.
  3. Set the broadcast details and visibility. For a scheduled stream, use the planned broadcast in Live Control Room.
  4. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the matching fields in OBS under Settings > Stream. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.

YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that the encoder sends the live feed using the server URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Starting the encoder creates the watch page. If the broadcast is scheduled, wait for its preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready.

Build the OBS radio scene and waveform

Add the radio audio

Add the source carrying your program audio to OBS, such as a media source or an audio input that receives your radio mix. Play representative audio and check the OBS audio meter. Make sure the signal is audible without clipping and that the intended source is reaching the stream mix.

Add a background or loop

For the simplest video, add a station card or other still image. A looping video can add motion, but it is not required for a radio broadcast. Arrange and size the visual source in the scene so it fills the canvas without covering essential text.

Display an audio-reactive waveform

To make the visual respond to sound, add an HTML visualizer through an OBS Browser source. A technical guide describes this approach, but a Browser source or visualizer does not automatically have access to every audio source on every operating system. Check the visualizer’s instructions for how it receives audio, configure that signal path, and confirm the waveform visibly moves when the intended program audio plays. If the visualizer cannot access the audio reliably, use a static station graphic or a pre-rendered animation instead.

Keep the scene legible at the resolution you plan to stream. If you use a visualizer with a separate audio path, test the sound and motion together rather than assuming that a moving preview proves the YouTube feed is correct.

Set encoder quality and test the feed

YouTube’s published encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and codec-dependent bitrate recommendations. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the current official table for your codec, resolution and frame rate rather than applying a preset from an unrelated setup: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The listed bitrate is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of your connection. Choose settings your upload connection can sustain, leaving capacity for normal network variation. For examples, YouTube’s H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps.

  1. In OBS, select the stream output settings that match YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate.
  2. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  3. Start the encoder and review the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
  4. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual program. Check that sound is present, the visualizer reacts, the picture is correctly framed, and YouTube reports a healthy stream.
  5. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room only after checking the preview.

YouTube specifically recommends preflight testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast.

Choose how to keep the radio stream running

The right approach depends on whether you can supervise a local computer, maintain a server process, or prefer hosted playlist playout. The available guides describe different workflows, but they do not establish comparative uptime or total cost.

Approach What it involves Best fit
StreamNeo Upload videos, add the YouTube stream key once, and start the cloud stream. It loops uploaded videos and can use playlists; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Creators who want uploaded-video playout to continue without leaving a computer running at home.
OBS on a local computer Build the scene and send the feed from OBS. The computer and connection must remain available, and someone may need to troubleshoot interruptions. A supervised setup where the creator wants direct control of the audio and visual pipeline.
FFmpeg on a VPS Run a configured process on a virtual server and arrange restart handling. This requires server and command-line maintenance. Technically experienced creators who want to manage their own unattended process.
Another hosted playout service Use the provider’s cloud workflow for playlists and visuals, subject to its current features and terms. Creators whose requirements fit the service and who have verified its current operating details.

For streams that end normally, YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that archive rule as a guarantee that an interrupted stream will be saved in full.

Clear music and visual rights

Confirm that your rights cover the actual live-stream use of every track and visual, and check the relevant territory, composition and sound-recording permissions. A music subscription does not necessarily grant every type of live-broadcast permission. A vendor guide notes that live streams may be scanned by Content ID and points to licensed music as one possible route, but it does not establish the license scope for a particular catalog or creator. Read the provider’s current terms and verify that they cover your YouTube broadcast.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a first live stream: Live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate for a first-time user. Check channel eligibility and try again after activation.
  • YouTube receives no video or audio: Check the server URL and stream key in OBS, confirm the encoder is running, and verify that the intended audio source is active and metering.
  • The waveform does not move: The visualizer may not be receiving the program audio. Check its required audio input or routing, then test again with sound playing.
  • The stream health is poor or unstable: Compare OBS output settings with YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations, confirm the keyframe interval, and check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
  • The scheduled broadcast has no live picture: Wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room, inspect the feed, and select Go live for the scheduled event.
  • A track triggers a rights issue: Stop or replace the material if needed, then verify the license covers live YouTube use and the territories where the stream is available.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are using uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone or camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

The Monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide. See current plan details, then start the free day on StreamNeo.
