Lower the video quality in the player, enable its data-saving mode if available, and set a lasting preference for the metered network. Then estimate usage from the service’s per-hour figures or the stream’s bitrate: continuous playback adds up quickly, and no single resolution guarantees a particular monthly total.

Change the player settings first

The exact controls depend on the streaming service and device. These steps apply to YouTube and Netflix as documented by their help centers; other players may use different labels or lack persistent network-specific settings.

YouTube

  1. For the current video: open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, then select Data saver or a lower resolution. YouTube describes Data saver as “Lower picture quality, but videos may start faster.” YouTube Help: change video quality.
  2. To set a preference: open your profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Choose a setting separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi. Set the metered connection to Data saver or a lower quality. The precise options may vary by device and video.

YouTube says Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. The Advanced option is not available for every video. A lower setting can make small details and text less sharp.

Netflix

  1. In a browser: open Account → Profiles → select the profile → Playback settings, then choose a lower data-use setting.
  2. In the mobile app: open My Netflix → profile name → App Settings → Video Playback → Cellular Data Usage. Choose Save Data to reduce cellular use, or Wi-Fi Only if you do not want playback over cellular data.

Netflix says mobile controls can be constrained by the profile’s playback setting. The cellular-data control may be unavailable while Automatic is enabled or downloads are pending. See Netflix: How to control how much data Netflix uses.

Estimate the data for continuous playback

Use the streaming service’s estimate per hour when it provides one. Multiply by 24 for a day, then by the number of days you plan to watch. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed bill: actual usage depends on the selected quality, the video’s encoding and complexity, and how the player behaves.

Netflix’s published estimates

Netflix Help Center figures, current when accessed on October 3, 2026, are per device and per hour. The daily figures below are arithmetic extensions of those hourly rates, not separate measurements published by Netflix. They describe Netflix generally, not a guaranteed rate for a particular cartoon livestream. Netflix Help Center.

Netflix setting or quality Published hourly estimate Implied use over 24 hours
Low Up to 0.3 GB 7.2 GB
Medium Up to 0.7 GB 16.8 GB
High, standard definition Up to 1 GB 24 GB
High, HD Up to 3 GB 72 GB
High, 4K Up to 7 GB 168 GB
Mobile Automatic About 4 hours per GB About 6 GB
Mobile Save Data About 6 hours per GB About 4 GB
Mobile Maximum Data 1 GB per 20 minutes or more At least 72 GB

Netflix’s mobile Automatic and Save Data conversions are approximate; the daily values are calculated from the stated hours per gigabyte. Maximum Data is expressed as a minimum daily implication because the published rate is 1 GB per 20 minutes or more.

Use bitrate for a separate planning estimate

If you know the sustained bitrate, 1 Mbps for 24 hours works out to approximately 10.8 decimal GB; over 30 days, approximately 324 decimal GB. This is a unit conversion—1,000,000 bits per second × elapsed seconds ÷ 8, converted to decimal gigabytes—not a measured result for a particular player or cartoon. Multiply the estimate by the actual bitrate in Mbps, then leave extra headroom for variation and network overhead.

Choose a quality that fits the screen and cap

There is no universal best resolution for every metered connection. Compare the player’s available choices against your data allowance, the screen you are watching on, and whether playback stays stable. Lower quality is usually the direct control for reducing use, but the amount saved depends on the stream and cannot be stated as a fixed percentage from the available service figures.

  • For YouTube: its help guidance calls 360p and 480p typical SD, and 720p and 1080p HD. UHD spans 2160–3840 vertical lines and uses much more data than HD or SD. YouTube Help: system requirements.
  • For Netflix connection speed: Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. These are speed recommendations for picture quality, not data-per-hour guarantees. Netflix: internet connection speed recommendations.
  • For cartoons specifically: a New Zealand Commerce Commission broadband report published October 27, 2022, described a Netflix encoding change in 2021 under which bitrate varies with video complexity. It noted that a program with fewer colors and less movement, like a cartoon, is encoded at a lower bitrate than a fast-paced action film. That is a dated observation about Netflix encoding, not a current universal rate or a quantified saving for your stream. Commerce Commission New Zealand, Measuring Broadband New Zealand Spring Report 2022.

Do not assume that shrinking the video window reduces downloaded data; that effect is not established here. Automatic quality modes may choose a higher setting as connection conditions change, so a fixed lower quality or data-saver choice is more predictable where the player offers it. If the problem is buffering rather than exceeding a data cap, lowering quality may also improve stability, but those are distinct issues.

Troubleshoot unexpectedly high use

  • The monthly total is higher than the estimate: confirm the selected quality in the player and whether the app has a separate cellular or network preference. Automatic may choose higher quality, and service estimates are not guaranteed stream rates.
  • The picture still looks sharp despite a low-data preference: check whether the setting applies to the current network and whether it is a default or only applies to one video. YouTube lets you choose preferences separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.
  • Netflix’s cellular control is missing: check whether Automatic is enabled or downloads are pending, and review the profile’s Playback settings; Netflix notes these can affect mobile controls.
  • Playback buffers after lowering quality: verify that the selected quality is supported for the video and try a slightly higher setting if data headroom permits. Quality and stability trade off differently across connections.
  • You have a speed limit rather than a data cap: reducing quality can ease buffering, but it does not change the terms of your internet plan. A faster plan may address speed, while a larger cap addresses total allowance; neither makes a given stream consume fewer bytes by itself.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you mean a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded cartoon videos as a live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud instead of requiring your computer and home connection to remain on. It does not reduce the data used by a viewer watching the stream: the advice above is for reducing the viewer’s download. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; and a first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
