For a low-end PC, start with OBS at 720p and 30 fps, use a supported hardware encoder if your computer has one, and set the bitrate below what your own connection can sustain. Test a private or unlisted stream from the same PC, network and location before relying on it. No OBS setting can guarantee an uninterrupted or indefinite broadcast: the PC, power, ISP route and YouTube ingest all matter.

What “continuous” means for an OBS stream

OBS can keep sending an encoder feed while the computer and network remain operational, but a long session is not the same as a guaranteed 24/7 service. The official guidance available here does not establish a reliable duration for a single OBS session, a minimum PC specification that ensures streaming, or a universal upload speed for India. Plan to monitor the stream and recover it if the PC, power, local network or YouTube connection fails.

For YouTube, an important archive limit is that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube’s guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream longer than 12 hours, so do not treat a very long event as a guaranteed recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Check your YouTube channel and stream setup

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the minimum age for live streaming is 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select a stream configured for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If OBS offers a choice of server or connection type, use the RTMPS option when available; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the feed to Google’s servers.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not include it in screenshots, recordings or the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
  5. Before a long session, start with a private or unlisted test, check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and test representative audio and motion. Monitor stream health during the test.

The exact appearance of OBS and YouTube Studio can vary by version or account. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe preparing the encoder, checking the preview and monitoring stream health.

Choose a low-load video profile in OBS

Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard

In OBS, select Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and use its result as a starting estimate, not a guarantee. Whether a computer can stream depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS warns that meeting its basic system requirements does not by itself guarantee that a machine can stream adequately; see the OBS system requirements.

Set output resolution and frame rate

For a constrained machine, try 1280×720 output at 30 fps first. If OBS struggles to render or encode, or the upload connection cannot keep up, test 480p30 or 360p30 instead. Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce processing demand, though the resulting image has less detail. A 30 fps profile is also a sensible first step if you were considering 60 fps: OBS specifically suggests dropping from 60 to 30 fps when performance is a problem.

You can reduce the output while leaving the canvas unchanged. Changing the canvas as well may require resizing and repositioning sources. Starting output YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate When to try it
720p30 3 Mbps Try first if the PC and measured upload can sustain it.
480p30 4 Mbps Try if you need a smaller image to reduce PC load; note that YouTube’s listed recommendation is not lower than the 720p30 figure.
360p30 4 Mbps Try if a lower output resolution is needed to ease rendering or encoding; the listed recommended bitrate is still 4 Mbps.
1080p30 14 Mbps Usually a less practical starting point on a low-end PC or limited connection.

These are YouTube’s displayed H.264 recommendations, not guarantees and not a claim that lower bitrates are forbidden. YouTube also publishes settings for other resolutions and codecs in its live encoder settings table.

Select an encoder and set output options

Hardware encoder or x264

If your PC has a supported hardware encoder and it works well in your own test, try it before relying on x264. A hardware encoder moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU, which may help a low-end CPU. The result and quality at a given bitrate depend on the hardware generation. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel QSV among supported hardware options, with generation-specific caveats; Apple VideoToolbox is relevant on Apple systems. Do not assume every graphics chip has a suitable encoder or that buying a particular GPU is necessary. Compare the options against the hardware actually in your PC using OBS’s hardware encoding guide.

Bitrate, rate control, keyframes and audio

In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder. YouTube’s general guidance calls for CBR rate control, a 2-second keyframe interval (not above 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a broadly compatible setup, H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative choice; use a different codec only if your encoder and workflow support it. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings if you need a resolution or codec not listed above.

Set bitrate for your actual upload connection

India does not have one upload-speed figure that makes every ISP, home network and route to YouTube reliable. A speed test is a useful first check, but the most relevant test is a sustained stream from the connection and location you intend to use. The YouTube bitrate figures are ingestion recommendations, not promises about broadband performance in India.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Measure the upload connection at the PC’s usual location and at the time you expect to stream.
  2. Choose the output profile and bitrate together. OBS’s connection troubleshooting suggests using around 75% of total upload speed as a starting video bitrate; this is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee or an India-specific rule.
  3. Run a private or unlisted stream at the planned bitrate and check OBS’s dropped-frame counter as well as YouTube’s stream health.
  4. If the connection drops frames or the stream cannot keep up, lower the bitrate and test again. Do not treat one speed-test result as proof that the route will remain stable for a long session.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions. You do not need to create a separate low-bitrate version for each kind of viewer when sending a YouTube stream.

Use a stable local network and a simple scene

Use Ethernet if practical. OBS identifies Wi-Fi instability as a possible cause of connection problems and recommends a wired link. A cable can improve the connection between the PC and router, but it cannot fix weak ISP service, insufficient upload capacity or congestion farther along the route. If Ethernet is not practical, test from the exact Wi-Fi location you plan to use.

  • Keep scenes simple: remove sources, filters and animated elements you do not need.
  • Reduce the resolution of oversized sources and avoid unnecessarily complex scene collections.
  • Close GPU-heavy applications. If streaming a game, cap its frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU resources.
  • On Windows, OBS suggests trying Run as administrator when diagnosing performance issues.

These steps are useful when OBS cannot render or encode frames quickly enough; they do not resolve an unstable internet connection. OBS separates these symptoms in its guides to encoding performance and stream connection troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot the symptom you see

“Encoding overloaded” or choppy output

This points first to a processing or rendering bottleneck. Lower output resolution, reduce frame rate, simplify scenes, reduce expensive or high-resolution sources, close GPU-heavy apps, and cap a game’s frame rate if one is running. If you are on Windows, try running OBS as administrator. Change one or two settings at a time and test again so you can tell which change helped.

Dropped frames

Dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Try a lower video bitrate, use Ethernet if available, and check network software and drivers. If OBS provides another ingest server option, a different server is also a troubleshooting step. Lower bitrate and then test the stream again; changing encoder settings alone will not fix upstream packet loss.

The preview works, but the long session is unreliable

A successful short preview only establishes that the setup worked during that test. For a long broadcast, plan a controlled restart schedule, monitor OBS and YouTube stream health, and consider how the PC and network will remain powered. If you need a local copy, test a separate recording plan first: recording consumes storage and can add encoder load, especially on a low-end PC. The reviewed platform guidance does not establish that simultaneous recording will be safe on your particular machine.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel that loops uploaded video rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving OBS running on a low-end PC. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so nothing needs to stay on at home. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; one free day per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. India-based customers can use UPI or cards; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before running a recording in a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights to every video and audio element and that your channel’s content complies with YouTube’s rules. A successful encoder test does not establish that content is permitted, monetizable or exempt from copyright claims. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight, and check YouTube’s current requirements in Studio.
