For a YouTube gaming livestream, use OBS Media Source only for a local video or audio file in a scene—for example, an intro, intermission clip, or background loop. It does not capture gameplay or set YouTube’s stream bitrate. There is no documented India-only Media Source preset: set playback options for the clip’s purpose, then choose encoder settings to fit your resolution, frame rate, and measured stable upload speed.
What OBS Media Source does—and what it does not
OBS Media Source adds a local media file to a scene. Use Game Capture (or another suitable capture source) for gameplay; Media Source is for clips and audio assets you want OBS to play. YouTube’s encoder settings are configured separately from this source. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS guide to Media Sources.
Choose Media Source playback settings for the clip
- Add the file: In the scene where the clip should appear, add a Media Source and select Local File to choose the asset.
- Set Loop: Leave it off for a one-time intro or outro. Turn it on for a repeating intermission or background clip; playback begins again when the file reaches its end.
- Set Restart playback when source becomes active: This is on by default. Keep it on if a clip should start from the beginning whenever its scene becomes visible. Turn it off if you do not want that restart behavior.
- Set Show nothing when playback ends: This is on by default. Keep it enabled when a clip should disappear at its end rather than hold on its final frame.
- Consider Close file when inactive: It is off by default. Enabling it unloads the file while the source is hidden or off-scene, which can free memory but may cause a delay as the file reloads when shown again.
- Consider Use hardware decoding when available: It is off by default. Enable it to let OBS use available GPU hardware decoding for supported formats; availability depends on the system and file.
For a one-time intro, Loop should remain off; whether it restarts when the scene becomes visible depends on whether you want each appearance to begin from the start. For an overlay that should vanish at the end, keep Show nothing when playback ends enabled. These playback controls do not determine whether YouTube saves the livestream as a VOD.
Set YouTube encoder output for your connection
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); supports frame rates up to 60 fps; and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations include the following examples. They are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them.

| Output profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
For the full codec- and resolution-specific recommendations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Choose the output profile based on the detail and motion you need and the upload capacity you can sustain—not simply the audience’s or creator’s country.
Measure upload speed and leave room for variation
YouTube recommends testing upload speed, keeping about 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom, and accounting for other people or services using the connection. The platform’s streaming tips state: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Use a stable measured upload result rather than a peak result, leave the recommended headroom, and account for other network use. If the connection cannot comfortably support a target profile, choose a lower bitrate or resolution.

- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your planned stream.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate whose recommended bitrate fits within your stable upload capacity with headroom left over.
- Run an unlisted test stream. Check audio, gameplay motion, and YouTube’s stream health before going public.
- During the actual stream, watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. If health degrades, reduce bitrate or output demands and test again.
YouTube’s live streaming tips provide further preparation guidance. Network conditions vary; the official guidance reviewed does not establish a different OBS Media Source default or a special YouTube gaming bitrate for India.
Make sure the livestream can become a usable VOD
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the complete VOD matters, do not rely on the automatic archive for a stream over that threshold; record locally as a backup and verify that the recording file is growing during setup. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends recording a local archive as a backup.

OBS Media Source playback settings do not enable or disable YouTube DVR. DVR is a separate YouTube Live Control Room feature that can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. Rewind is limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to before the stream began. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Choose latency separately from Media Source
Latency is the delay between capture and viewer playback, not a Media Source setting. Lower latency can make chat interaction feel more immediate but may increase buffering. If live interaction is central, test a lower-latency mode on your actual connection; if steadier playback matters more than immediate replies, a higher-latency mode may be preferable. YouTube explains the available stream controls in its live stream settings guide.

Common problems and fixes
- The clip does not repeat: Check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. It is off by default.
- The clip restarts whenever its scene appears: Restart playback when source becomes active is on by default. Change it if that behavior is not wanted.
- The last frame remains visible: Enable Show nothing when playback ends if the source should disappear at the end.
- The clip takes time to appear after being hidden: If Close file when inactive is enabled, OBS unloads the media while it is inactive. Disable it if the reload delay is undesirable.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or playback buffers: Check stable upload capacity and other network use, leave headroom, and lower bitrate or output demands if needed. Confirm with an unlisted test rather than assuming a recommended bitrate will work on every connection.
- The complete long stream is missing from archives: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording backup for sessions where a complete VOD matters.
