First check whether the sound is missing only on your device or whether the YouTube replay itself is silent. If the replay is silent on multiple devices, trace the audio through your capture setup: play game sound, watch the relevant OBS mixer meter, then check the source, mute and fader state, and output-track assignment. Make a short local recording and listen to it before streaming again. A silent existing replay may not be recoverable.
First determine where the sound disappears
- Check playback. In the YouTube player, verify the speaker is not muted and raise the player and device volumes. Check the selected audio output, then try another browser or app, another device, or ask another viewer to check the replay.
- Check the replay itself. If other viewers or devices hear audio, the problem is likely local playback. If the replay is silent for multiple people, investigate the recording and streaming audio path.
- Identify what is missing. Note whether the microphone, game audio, or all sound is absent. If the microphone works but game audio does not, focus on the game source, app routing, console output, or capture card. If all sources are silent, start with OBS sources and output configuration.
There is no special YouTube control documented for restoring sound to an already-silent archive. Diagnose the source rather than assuming the player can repair it.
Use the OBS mixer to locate the break
Start the game or play a representative sound while watching the meter for the relevant source in OBS. OBS describes its meters as indicators of source volume; the mixer also provides mute, fader, and monitoring controls.
- No meter movement: OBS is not receiving that sound. Check whether the correct game or device is selected, whether the game is routed to another output, and whether console or capture-card audio is reaching the computer.
- The meter moves: Check that the source is not muted, its fader is raised, and it is assigned to an output track that your stream or recording actually uses. The right track depends on your output configuration; do not assume a universal track number.
- Mic works, game does not: Leave the working microphone source alone while you troubleshoot the game’s capture and routing path.

Fix game audio capture on Windows
Choose a capture method that matches your Windows and OBS versions. OBS’s Application Audio Capture guide says per-application capture is available on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. It also says OBS Studio 30.1 added audio capture to Game Capture or Window Capture sources.
- For Game Capture or Window Capture: Open the source’s properties and, if the option is present in your installed version, enable “Capture Audio (BETA).” The guide uses that label; options can differ by version.
- For a separate application source: Add an Application Audio Capture source and select the game or application window producing the sound.
- Avoid capturing the same sound twice: OBS cautions that when using Application Audio Capture sources, Desktop Audio should be disabled to avoid echo.
- If the app is incompatible: OBS describes routing the application through a virtual audio cable, then adding that cable as an Audio Input Capture source. This is an advanced workaround; confirm it suits your setup before changing system routing.
Fix desktop or application capture on macOS
The method depends on both OBS and macOS versions. OBS’s macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide describes these combinations:

- OBS Studio 30 with macOS 13 (Ventura) or later: Use the macOS Audio Capture source for desktop or selected application audio. The macOS Screen Capture Source can also capture audio.
- OBS Studio 28 or 29 with macOS 13 or later: The guide identifies the Screen Capture Source as the method.
- Older macOS versions: The guide says additional software is required for desktop-audio capture.
These instructions reflect the guide’s version-specific advice; check the current OBS documentation and the options in your installed version if its interface differs.
Check a console and capture-card audio path
If a console feeds OBS through a capture card, verify both the console’s audio output format and the way audio reaches the capture device. Settings vary by console generation and capture-card model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual hardware.

Confirm the console output format
Elgato’s no-game-sound troubleshooting guide says its capture devices take stereo (2.0) PCM and do not support bitstream, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, Dolby Atmos, or other listed formats. For the PlayStation configurations covered by its guide, Elgato recommends Linear PCM. For the Xbox configuration it documents, it recommends stereo or uncompressed output. On Switch, it says Surround may prevent some sounds from being captured correctly and recommends Stereo if Automatic fails. Apply those settings only when they match your console and device.
Check headset routing and the capture-card source
Elgato documents cases where a headset connected to a PlayStation controller or Switch headphone port prevents game audio from being sent over HDMI. If your setup matches, test with the headset disconnected or change the console’s audio routing according to the relevant device instructions.

OBS setup can differ by operating system as well: Elgato says Windows may capture its device automatically when it is added, while on macOS you may need to add an Audio Input Capture source and select the capture device.

- Configure OBS as you intend to use it for the stream.
- Record a short sample while playing the game and speaking into the microphone if you use one.
- Listen to the resulting local file in a media player. Check game and microphone audio separately, including the opening and a representative gameplay section.
- Before going live, test with representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the event.
YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” OBS also recommends recording a session with your normal configuration and listening to the resulting file.

What to expect from an already-silent replay
YouTube’s “Archive live streams” guidance recommends keeping a local backup, but it does not establish that missing audio can reliably be restored after a stream. Keep and check your local recording if you have one; do not count on YouTube Studio to reconstruct audio that was never captured.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive-duration warning, not a statistic about audio failures.
