To stream a prerecorded gaming VOD as a YouTube Live event from a Windows PC, create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, add the local video to an OBS scene as a Media Source, connect OBS with the event’s stream key, then preview and start the broadcast. The PC must stay on and connected for the entire stream. This is an encoder-fed live broadcast, not simply an upload of the video.
Before you start: check livestream access and prepare the VOD
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and livestreamers must be at least 16. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s livestreaming setup guidance explains activation and eligibility.
- Have the finished gaming video saved locally on the Windows PC.
- Confirm you have permission to use the gameplay, soundtrack, overlays, clips, and any other material in the VOD.
- Use a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream quality.
- Install OBS Studio and check its current interface: menu labels and source controls can change between versions.
A capture card is not normally needed when the VOD is already a file on the PC. It is relevant when the source is an external console or another device.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream, or open the event you have already scheduled.
- Enter the title, description, visibility, audience setting, and schedule as appropriate. Confirm you are editing the intended broadcast.
- In the event’s stream settings, locate the stream key and server details. YouTube describes a stream key as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Manage live stream settings.
The event page and the encoder do different jobs: Studio holds the event details and viewer-facing destination; OBS sends the video and audio feed to it. Do not show the key in a screen recording, tutorial, or public chat.

Set up OBS to play the local gaming VOD
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- Add a Media Source to that scene and select the local VOD file. Fit or crop the source to the canvas as needed, and check that the picture fills the intended frame.
- Choose what the source should do when playback ends. Depending on the current OBS version and source settings, it may stop, restart, or be replaced by another scene. Test the behavior before the event; do not assume the file will loop or that OBS will end the YouTube event automatically.
- Check the audio mixer while the video plays. Make sure the VOD audio is audible and not duplicated by also capturing the same audio through desktop capture. If you plan to speak live, configure and test a microphone separately.
- Connect OBS to YouTube using the YouTube service integration or the current server and stream-key fields. Select the event’s key, not a key from another channel or broadcast. OBS’s community guide covers connecting to YouTube and working with scheduled or unscheduled broadcasts: Streaming to YouTube with OBS.
Using a Media Source to play a local file is the OBS implementation of this workflow; YouTube does not take the file and play it as a live stream by itself.
Choose output quality and test the feed
Use a quality your upload connection can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real stream, checking stream health, using RTMPS, and encoding at constant bitrate (CBR). Its current guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; use the values in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every setup.

- In OBS output settings, choose a supported video encoder and set rate control to CBR. Configure bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to match your connection and YouTube’s recommendations.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes that control; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Start sending the feed from OBS, then open the correct event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Wait for the preview and inspect picture, audio, and stream-health indicators. Check that the VOD is moving, the audio is present once, and the event is receiving the expected quality.
- If the preview is wrong or unstable, stop and correct the setup before starting the public event.
HDR and advanced codec options are not necessary for an ordinary SDR gaming VOD. Use them only if the whole workflow and encoder support them and you have tested the result.
Start, monitor, and finish the broadcast
- Once the Live Control Room preview is correct, start the event using the current Studio controls. Confirm that the event is actually live before closing or switching away from the monitoring view.
- Keep OBS, the Windows PC, and the network connection running throughout the broadcast. Watch for encoder warnings, dropped frames, audio changes, or an unexpected end to the source video.
- When the broadcast is over, stop the event deliberately in the appropriate controls. Check the event’s archive and retention settings if you want a replay available afterward.
A local VOD source does not guarantee unattended scheduling: playback end behavior and event start/stop actions depend on your OBS source configuration and how you operate the event.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply to a VOD
Prerecorded material is not exempt from YouTube’s rules. Live streams must follow the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube scans live content for third-party material. If it detects copyrighted content, it may replace the image with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. An archive may also receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams describes these risks.
Review the game publisher’s streaming permissions and verify rights for music, overlays, clips, and inserted media. Owning a game or having some form of license does not by itself guarantee that Content ID will not interrupt a stream. For licensed material, confirm the relevant permissions and ask the rights holder about any channel allowlisting YouTube requires to avoid interruption. YouTube’s live streaming policies cover the applicable rules.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed | Livestreaming has not been enabled, the wrong event or key is selected, or the network/encoder connection is failing. | Confirm channel eligibility and activation, select the intended event’s key, check OBS’s connection status, and review the Live Control Room stream-health messages. |
| Studio preview stays blank | OBS is not sending the scene with the Media Source, or the source is not displaying the selected file. | Check the active OBS scene, source visibility, file path, and playback state; then send the feed again and wait for the preview. |
| Video plays but has no sound | The Media Source audio is muted, routed incorrectly, or captured twice through another audio source. | Watch the OBS mixer while the VOD plays, check source audio settings and output routing, and listen to the Studio preview. |
| Stream buffers or health warnings appear | The chosen bitrate or quality exceeds what the upload connection can sustain, or the connection is unstable. | Reduce output quality or bitrate to a sustainable setting, test the connection, and re-check stream health before going live. |
| Broadcast shows a placeholder or ends unexpectedly | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the source or encoder stopped. | Check Studio warnings and OBS status. Review rights for every included asset; if content is licensed, verify permissions and any required rights-holder allowlisting. |
| The video ends before the intended broadcast does | The Media Source reached the end of the file, and its configured end behavior was not what you expected. | Test the source’s stop/restart behavior in advance and arrange the following scene or deliberate event shutdown. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded video looping on YouTube without leaving a Windows PC running, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
