Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can keep a podcast feed live on YouTube with an encoder, but treat the live broadcast and its chapters as two separate jobs: send the feed to YouTube Live, then add chapter timestamps to the recording after it is uploaded. YouTube’s documented chapter workflow is for uploaded videos; do not count on those timestamps appearing as chapter markers during the live stream.
Choose what “continuous” means for your podcast
Before setting up the stream, decide which format you need. They have different broadcast and archive implications.
- Recurring live episodes: Schedule a separate broadcast for each episode. This gives each episode its own watch page and recording.
- One always-on feed: Keep a single broadcast running, for example with prerecorded material cycling between live segments. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, so a longer nonstop broadcast may not produce one complete automatic replay.
- An always-on feed plus separate interviews: YouTube’s API documentation describes creating distinct broadcast resources for the continuous feed and an interview carried over the same incoming stream. The interview broadcast can end while the ongoing broadcast continues. This is an API-oriented pattern, not a one-click YouTube Studio setting.
If complete, chaptered episode replays matter, use bounded broadcasts or preserve a recording and publish separate episode videos. That avoids relying on a single very long broadcast archive.
Set up the YouTube Live broadcast
- Check live-streaming eligibility and activation. Confirm that your channel meets YouTube’s current requirements. First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to launch.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling can create a watch page and let viewers set reminders.
- Connect an encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into compatible streaming software or an encoder. The server URL tells the encoder where to send the signal; the stream key identifies and routes the incoming feed. Treat the key as a credential. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder.
- Configure the show and test it privately or before promotion. Check that the encoder is sending the intended picture and sound, preview the incoming signal in Live Control Room, and listen for clipping, silence, or an unintended microphone input. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video quality; expensive equipment is not a prerequisite.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that the source keeps playing and that viewers can access the watch page. For a long-running feed, arrange periodic checks of the source and stream rather than assuming the broadcast will run without interruption.
YouTube’s encoder setup and eligibility details are in its live streaming with an encoder guidance. Exact controls and eligibility requirements can change, so check the current instructions in YouTube Help and Live Control Room.

Plan the recording before you go live
Keep episodes within a manageable broadcast
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended. Do not assume a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will create one complete automatic replay. For a chaptered archive, end episode broadcasts deliberately, or keep a separate recording and upload it as an episode video.
Separate an episode from a 24/7 feed when needed
For recurring episodes, create a distinct scheduled broadcast per episode. For a continuous feed that also carries individual interviews, Google’s API documentation models the ongoing feed and each interview as separate broadcast resources, even when they use the same stream. That approach may require API-level setup; the documentation does not establish a simple Studio control for doing it.

Add chapters to the uploaded recording
YouTube’s manual chapter instructions apply to uploaded videos. Once the live recording is available as a video, add timestamps to its description in YouTube Studio. You can also use the same process for a separately uploaded episode recording.

00:00. - Include at least three timestamps, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long.
- Save the description and check the video’s player to confirm the chapters appear as intended.
Example format:
00:00 Introduction
02:14 Why we chose this topic
08:42 Listener question
15:06 Closing notes
Those times are illustrative; use the actual start time of each segment in your recording. Keep titles short and specific enough to help a viewer find a topic. Manual chapters override automatic chapters. YouTube’s Video Chapters guidance documents the format and requirements.
Automatic chapters are optional, not a substitute for checking
YouTube may offer automatic chapters in a video’s settings, but not every video is eligible and not every eligible video receives them. Use manual timestamps when accuracy and editorial control matter, particularly for episode topics, guest names, and sponsor breaks.

Choose a production approach for your format
| Format | Practical approach | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring live podcast | Schedule a distinct YouTube broadcast for each episode and reuse encoder settings where appropriate. | Guest handling, audio/video inputs, overlays, monitoring, and a separate recording with chapters for each episode. |
| Always-on feed with separate interviews | Use distinct broadcast resources; Google’s API documentation describes binding multiple broadcasts to the same incoming stream. | API-level setup or a third-party automation workflow, plus clear monitoring and archive handling. |
| Chaptered on-demand episodes | Upload or retain each episode as a video and add manual description timestamps. | Accurate timestamps and a recording that is complete enough to publish. |
If you speak live, YouTube supports using external audio and video hardware through an encoder, but you do not need expensive equipment to begin. Choose equipment and software based on the number of speakers, inputs, and production elements you actually need.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: Check channel eligibility and activation status. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder does not connect: Re-copy the server URL and stream key from the correct Live Control Room event, then verify they are entered in the matching encoder fields. Reset a key that may have been exposed.
- The preview has no sound or the wrong sound: Check the encoder’s selected audio input and levels, then make another test before going public.
- Chapters do not appear: Confirm the timestamps are in the uploaded video’s description, the first is `00:00`, there are at least three in ascending order, and each segment is at least 10 seconds. Save the description and check again.
- A long stream has no complete replay: YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. For longer programming, split it into bounded broadcasts or preserve and upload a separate recording.
- Automatic chapters are missing: Eligibility does not guarantee automatic chapters. Add manual timestamps to the uploaded video when you need dependable navigation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your format is a prerecorded podcast feed that should keep looping, StreamNeo is an alternative to leaving an encoder computer running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera.
