You can rebroadcast archived gaming videos as a YouTube Live event by playing them in order on a computer and sending the computer’s output through a streaming encoder. YouTube provides the event, server URL, and stream key; your playback source or encoder setup handles the playlist. YouTube does not provide a built-in button that turns an archive playlist into a Live stream.
Before you start: check channel access and content rights
Confirm livestreaming is enabled
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before scheduling. See YouTube’s encoder guide and livestreaming tips for current requirements.
Review every recording before rebroadcasting
Use broadcasts you own or have permission to rebroadcast. Check the game publisher’s rules and review embedded music, third-party clips, voice chat, overlays, and other material. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder, interruption, or termination. If you have a license, the rights holder may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived livestreams may receive Content ID claims after the event ends. Details are in YouTube’s livestream copyright guidance.
YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” An unlisted or private test does not remove these obligations or prevent copyright scanning. Read the YouTube Terms of Service.

Set up a playlist-based stream with a computer and encoder
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. A local computer and software encoder are enough for many rebroadcasts; YouTube lists OBS as an open-source encoder at no charge. The playlist itself is an implementation choice: YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the connection, not how to configure a particular application to play a queue of local files. Choose a playback source that supports your intended order and test its behavior before scheduling.
- Prepare the files and playlist. Put the archived broadcasts in the order you want and configure your chosen media playback source to advance between them. Check that each file plays, that audio is present, and that the transitions behave as intended. Avoid assuming that a particular playlist menu or automation feature is available in every application.
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room, then create or schedule the stream. Set the event visibility and schedule to match your plan. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: it directs the encoder to your stream and allows YouTube to accept its feed. Do not publish it or share it with someone who should not control the stream.
- Set output and network capacity. Choose video and audio settings that your encoder, source files, and connection can sustain. YouTube’s streaming guidance recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup stream bitrates; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. Consult YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for the current settings relevant to your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Verify picture, audio, playlist order, transitions, event visibility, and the watch page. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality before and during the event.
- End the event and keep a local copy. Stop the livestream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or source-file backup rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone.
Choose the playback approach that fits the event
| Approach | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Local computer plus software encoder | One-off rebroadcasts, hands-on playlist control, and a low-cost setup | YouTube lists OBS as free and open source. You must arrange the media playback source and keep the computer and encoder running for the event. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required. |
| Dedicated hardware playout/encoder | Scheduled prerecorded playback without leaving a computer running | YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The cited information does not establish its price, suitability for every consumer, or comparative reliability. |
| Cloud playout | Continuous or 24/7 prerecorded streaming | YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. Check the provider for current availability and plan limits. |
Choose based on whether the playlist must run unattended, whether you want local control, how long the stream will run, and whether your existing setup is sufficient. YouTube has not published a comparative benchmark establishing which approach is more reliable, less expensive, or better in video quality.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live Control Room will not accept the stream. Check that livestreaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and there is no restriction from the previous 90 days. Confirm that the encoder has the current server URL and stream key; replace the key in the encoder if you changed it in YouTube.
- The preview is missing or arrives late. Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the correct event, then check its connection and output status. Leave time before the scheduled start to diagnose problems rather than starting at the last minute.
- The feed stutters or drops frames. Check whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom over primary plus backup bitrates. If it cannot, reduce the output demand or use a more capable connection.
- The playlist stops, skips, or plays files out of order. The playlist is controlled by the selected playback application, not by YouTube’s event settings. Verify the queue, file compatibility, automatic advance, and transitions in a private or unlisted test before scheduling.
- YouTube interrupts the stream for a copyright match. Stop and investigate the identified material. Confirm you have the necessary rights; if licensed material is involved, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist.
- The completed livestream has no archive. Check its duration: YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For long events, retain a local recording.
