To update videos rotating during an active YouTube gaming stream, change the playlist in OBS—not in YouTube Live Control Room. OBS’s VLC Video source supports media playlists, with loop and shuffle options. Because OBS’s documentation does not guarantee that editing an active playlist is seamless, test your exact edit method before relying on it on-air.
What controls the video rotation?
OBS supplies the stream’s visuals. For a rotation of local video files, OBS documents the VLC Video source as a playlist-capable option. YouTube Live Control Room handles stream setup and metadata, such as the stream key; it does not edit the media playlist playing through OBS.
Keep the tasks separate: use OBS to change what video content appears, and use YouTube Live Control Room if you need to change stream information such as the title or game category.
Set up a playlist in OBS
Install VLC if the source is missing
OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. OBS also advises matching VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

Add and configure the source
- In OBS, select the scene where the rotating videos should appear.
- In the Sources panel, click the add (+) button and choose VLC Video Source.
- Give the source a recognizable name, then open its properties.
- Add the local media files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop if the playlist should restart after the last file. Enable Shuffle if you want OBS to vary the order instead of following the listed sequence.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and preview playback before going live.
OBS describes the source and its playlist controls in its Media Sources documentation. General source handling is covered in the OBS Sources Guide.
Update the rotation while the stream is live
Make playlist changes in OBS while the stream remains active. The documentation confirms playlist support, but does not promise that adding, removing, or reordering files in an already-playing playlist will happen without a visible interruption. The exact result may depend on the timing of the edit and your OBS setup.

- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Before the broadcast, rehearse the precise change you plan to make—for example, adding a file, removing one, or changing the order—while recording or testing a private stream.
- During the broadcast, open the VLC Video source’s properties in OBS and make the intended playlist change.
- Watch the OBS preview and the live output to confirm the intended video appears and playback continues as expected.
- If the change causes a brief visual break, use a prepared backup scene or a short transition as an operational fallback. These are precautions, not documented requirements.
Do not assume that a playlist edit is invisible just because the broadcast itself has not ended. Validate the exact workflow in your configuration before using it for an important stream.
Playlist changes versus YouTube stream settings
If the videos on screen need to change, work in OBS. If the game or category, title, or other stream metadata needs to change, use YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings covers stream configuration and metadata; it is separate from the media sources OBS sends to the stream. For setup prerequisites, consult YouTube’s live streaming guide.

Do you need a Stream Deck?
No physical control surface is required for an OBS playlist. A third-party project called obs-playlist-deck advertises Stream Deck integration, but that applies to that project; it does not establish that every playlist action or setup is compatible. You can manage the source directly in OBS.
