You can run that encoder on a computer you keep on, use dedicated hardware, or use a cloud service. YouTube does not guarantee that a particular playlist setup will run uninterrupted, so plan for monitoring, recovery, and—if replays matter—sessions shorter than 12 hours.
Choose how to keep the stream running
YouTube receives the broadcast from an encoder: software on a computer, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service. Pick an approach based on whether it can play your lesson sequence, recover from interruptions, and be monitored at the hours your ministry needs.

- Computer and software encoder: A practical starting point if you already have a suitable computer and can leave it running, connected, and monitored. YouTube recognizes software apps as encoders, but no particular playlist application or uninterrupted looping setup is established here.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: An optional choice for a more dedicated or higher-production setup. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but does not require one for this use.
- Broadcast-grade cloud processing: YouTube’s verified-encoder list includes AWS Elemental MediaLive. This is a possible category for larger operations, not a default recommendation for a small Sunday school channel.
Before choosing, check lesson-playback support, continuity and restart behavior, failover, monitoring, YouTube compatibility, production complexity, and total cost. There is no like-for-like price or feature comparison for the computer, hardware, and cloud options above, so compare the specific products and service tiers you would actually use.
Set up a YouTube encoder stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. Scheduling also lets you share the watch-page URL before the broadcast.
- Set the stream options. Choose privacy and DVR behavior for your audience and use case. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Connect the encoder. Select YouTube in the encoder if it is offered; otherwise enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Start the encoder and wait for its preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then start the live event.
- Load and test the lesson sequence. Configure your selected encoder workflow to play the recordings in the intended order. Watch each lesson through, check that speech and any music are audible, and confirm that transitions or gaps behave as intended. Playlist and restart behavior depend on the tool you select; do not assume an untested setup will loop continuously.
- Check the viewer experience. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before an event. Check the Live Control Room preview, public watch page, channel page, and playback on a phone. Confirm picture and audio quality, and test backup-encoder failover if your setup supports it.
Plan for a 24/7 schedule and YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream that is less than 12 hours long. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast a poor choice if you need YouTube to provide a complete replay. If archives matter, use sessions shorter than 12 hours, keep local recordings, and verify how your encoder stops and starts sessions. YouTube’s archive guidance gives the limit; it does not prescribe a universal restart method.

Continuous playback also requires an operational plan. Assign someone to respond to a failed feed, network outage, or playback problem. Keep the source lesson files locally, and retain a separate local archive when possible. If you rely on a backup encoder, configure and test it: YouTube suggests testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable.
Allow enough network capacity
YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, if the encoder sends a 5 Mbps stream, allow at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity for that stream. This is headroom guidance, not a guarantee against outages or congestion.

Check that the connection can sustain the encoder’s total bitrate for the full session. Other devices and uploads on the same connection can reduce available capacity, so test under realistic household or church-network conditions. Confirm the feed in Live Control Room and on the watch page rather than relying only on the encoder’s “streaming” status.
Confirm rights for lessons, music, and images
Use only recordings and accompanying music, images, or other material for which your ministry has permission for livestream use. A license to show a lesson in person does not necessarily cover an online broadcast, worldwide distribution, or the relevant music rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match may cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it if the match remains. If you have licensed third-party material, the rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for use on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights: YouTube Terms of Service.
If you plan to monetize, consider the channel and the stream under YouTube’s monetization policies. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Reused material needs meaningful original value, and permission by itself does not settle the separate reused-content question. Continuous playback or using an encoder does not establish monetization eligibility. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key, is set to YouTube or the appropriate custom destination, and is actively sending. Recheck the key in Live Control Room if needed, then wait for the preview.
- The stream starts but the lesson does not play or loop: Check the selected encoder’s media source and playlist configuration. Test a complete sequence, including the transition from the final recording back to the first; playlist behavior varies by encoder.
- Viewers cannot hear the lesson: Verify the recording’s audio track and the encoder’s selected audio source, then listen to the Live Control Room preview and public watch page.
- The picture or audio stutters: Check available upload capacity against the total stream bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use and retest.
- The stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Review the lesson and all embedded music or images for livestream permissions. If the material is licensed, contact the rights owner about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- A long stream has no complete YouTube replay: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording and, for future replays, divide the broadcast into sessions shorter than 12 hours and test the encoder’s restart process.
