You can keep a pre-recorded video streaming on YouTube from a Linux VPS by uploading the media file, sending it to YouTube with an encoder such as FFmpeg, and keeping that encoder process supervised. YouTube supplies the stream URL and key in Live Control Room; the VPS runs the broadcast instead of your home computer. This is a practical implementation, not a YouTube-endorsed FFmpeg recipe, and it still depends on channel eligibility, a suitable source file, stable VPS networking and monitoring.
Check channel eligibility before setting up the VPS
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must be at least 16. A VPS or a new encoder configuration cannot bypass an account restriction. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and policy guidance.
Confirm that the channel can go live before renting or configuring a server. Also make sure you have the rights to stream every video and audio track in the file. YouTube says, “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” Its general policy page does not determine whether you personally hold the rights to a particular recording.
What you need
- A YouTube channel currently eligible to live stream.
- A Linux VPS that can store or access the media file and sustain the chosen outbound bitrate.
- A pre-recorded video, with a decision about whether to stream-copy it or transcode it to YouTube-compatible settings.
- FFmpeg or another encoder, plus a way to supervise the process, retain logs and notice failures.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key for the stream you create in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password.
There is no universally correct VPS size or provider in this workflow. CPU and memory needs depend on whether FFmpeg must transcode; network capacity and any outbound-transfer allowance depend on bitrate and runtime. Compare current plan terms for your region and estimate sustained transfer before choosing a server.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the Live server URL and stream key into the encoder: Set up your encoder for YouTube Live.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots and logs. Store it in a restricted configuration file or secret-management mechanism readable only by the account running FFmpeg. Avoid putting it in a command line that may be visible to other local users or captured in process listings.
- Use the actual endpoint and key displayed for your stream, rather than relying on an old copied ingest URL.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP-over-SSL/TLS option. Its ingest documentation describes the RTMPS connection and port 443; use the endpoint shown for your stream and the current RTMPS ingest guidance.
Upload the video and choose copy or transcode
Transfer the file to storage the VPS can read, using a method and account you control. Before streaming, inspect the file’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate and audio format. If the video and audio already match settings YouTube accepts, stream-copying avoids another encode and reduces CPU use. It is not safe to assume every media file is suitable for direct copy: incompatible codecs, variable timing or unsupported formats may require transcoding.

When transcoding, choose an output that matches the source as closely as practical and fits the VPS’s CPU and network capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance is the authority for current ingest settings and compatible formats: YouTube Live encoder settings.
Configure FFmpeg for YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its current settings table recommends 17 Mbps video for H.264 at 1080p60. That is YouTube’s published recommendation, not a guarantee of viewer quality or a requirement to use 1080p60. Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source and set bitrate within both YouTube’s guidance and the VPS’s sustainable outbound capacity.

A lower frame rate or resolution can reduce bitrate and, when transcoding, CPU demand. For a source that already has compatible encoding, a stream-copy workflow may be preferable; for a source that does not, transcode rather than forcing incompatible media through unchanged.
FFmpeg options vary with the source, chosen output codecs and the exact ingest URL. Use the current server URL, key and RTMPS endpoint from Live Control Room, and consult the FFmpeg documentation for the syntax appropriate to your input and installed build. Do not paste a stream key into a public example or publish it in shell history. The YouTube encoder page gives the target settings; YouTube does not publish a specific endorsed FFmpeg command for Linux VPS continuous streaming.

Start the stream and verify it in Live Control Room
- Start FFmpeg under the restricted Linux user that can read the media and protected key configuration.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, encoder errors and repeated reconnects. Keep logs somewhere with restricted access because careless logging can expose credentials.
- Wait for the incoming preview and health information in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the correct video is being received and the stream is stable.
- Use the applicable Live Control Room control to go live. The encoder connection and YouTube’s broadcast state are related but distinct; do not assume that a connected process alone means the public broadcast is live.
- Monitor the live stream after launch. Decide in advance whether an encoder disconnect should cause the broadcast to end or whether your setup should reconnect and resume.
Keep the VPS process running and recover from failures
A VPS removes the need to leave your personal computer on, but it does not make a stream outage-proof. The server must remain provisioned, retain access to the media, keep outbound connectivity and run a healthy encoder. Use a process supervisor or equivalent service manager to restart a failed process, keep logs, and configure an alert for process exit or sustained network failure. Test the restart behavior before relying on unattended operation.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents a continuous-broadcast arrangement in which a stream resource can be bound to broadcasts, including a 24/7 case where an ongoing broadcast continues while a separate interview broadcast is created and later completed. That describes an API broadcast pattern; it does not guarantee that an FFmpeg process will never disconnect, and a single continuous stream does not require every creator to use the API. See YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation.

Troubleshoot common VPS streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | Wrong server URL or stream key, encoder not connected, or incompatible output. | Confirm the URL and key in Live Control Room, inspect FFmpeg logs, and verify that the output uses supported settings. |
| Frequent reconnects or dropped frames | VPS outbound capacity is below the configured bitrate, or the network is unstable. | Check sustained network performance and provider transfer terms; reduce bitrate or output resolution if needed. |
| High CPU or encoder stalls | Transcoding workload exceeds available VPS compute, or input settings are unsuitable. | Check process resource use; stream-copy compatible media or select a less demanding transcode configuration. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Process failure, VPS restart, storage issue or lost network access. | Review protected logs, confirm the media remains available, and verify the supervisor’s restart and alert rules. |
| Video arrives but quality or timing is poor | Bitrate, keyframe spacing, resolution, frame rate or source encoding does not suit the ingest settings. | Align output with YouTube’s encoder recommendations and the source; use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where applicable. |
| Broadcast is not publicly live despite encoder connection | The encoder feed is connected, but the broadcast has not been started in Live Control Room or its state differs from the intended setup. | Check the preview and broadcast controls in Live Control Room, then confirm the public stream state. |
Understand VPS costs and operating trade-offs
The main costs are the VPS plan, storage and any outbound data charges or limits. At a constant video bitrate of 17 Mbps, video alone transfers roughly 7.65 GB per hour before audio, protocol overhead or retransmissions; that is a mathematical estimate, not a provider quote. A continuous stream therefore makes transfer allowances and sustained network performance central to plan selection. No single VPS price or server specification applies across providers, locations and current plan terms.
A self-managed VPS offers control over files, encoder settings and process behavior, but you are responsible for Linux maintenance, stream monitoring, reconnects, storage and network capacity. If you prefer not to operate a server, a hosted option is StreamNeo, which runs uploaded videos as continuous YouTube streams from the cloud. It is the first option to consider for less server maintenance: any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. The same plan supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
