To keep YouTube moving from one video to the next, turn on Autoplay on the device you’re using or play a playlist or queue. To keep audio going after you leave the app or lock your phone, you need the separate Background play feature, which YouTube documents for eligible signed-in Premium members in supported mobile apps and locations. These solve different problems.
Choose the kind of playback you want to continue
| Goal | Use | What continues |
|---|---|---|
| Play another video after the current one ends | Autoplay | A recommended next video, subject to the setting and device behavior |
| Choose the videos that play next | A playlist or queue | The items you selected, in sequence |
| Keep audio going after leaving the app or locking a phone | Background play, where available | The current video’s audio |
| Keep music flowing without choosing each track | YouTube Music radio stations or shuffled mixes | A continuous music selection, depending on availability and context |
Autoplay does not keep the current video’s audio running in the background, and Background play does not guarantee that a new video will start when the current one ends.
Turn on Autoplay or choose what plays next
Check Autoplay on the device you are using
When a video ends, YouTube Autoplay can start another video. Check the Autoplay control in the YouTube interface on the same device or session where playback stops. YouTube says settings can differ across devices, so enabling it on a phone should not be assumed to enable it on a TV or another device. Casting behavior may also vary; the available official help material does not establish one setting that guarantees every transition across devices.
Use a playlist or queue for a known sequence
If recommendations are not what you want, use a playlist or queue so you choose the next videos. YouTube documents manual queueing on mobile devices and tablets for Premium members; on Android, recommended videos can also be added to the queue. The exact controls and eligibility can vary by app and account, so check the options shown in your YouTube app.

Keep audio playing when your phone is locked
This is a Background play question, not an Autoplay question. YouTube documents Background play in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps when available, for users signed in with an eligible Premium account. Availability depends on the app, account, and location.
Check the Background play setting
- Open the relevant YouTube app and confirm that you are signed in to an account eligible for the feature in your location.
- Open the app’s settings and look for Background play. YouTube documents the choices as Always on, Off, or playback only with Headphones or external speakers.
- If you chose the headphones or external-speakers option, make sure that audio output is connected. That condition affects background playback; it does not turn on Autoplay or ensure that a next video begins.
- Start a video, leave the app or lock the screen, and check whether its audio continues. If it stops, verify the account’s eligibility, app availability, and Background play setting.
Because availability and app interfaces can change, use the settings and plan details shown in your own app and account rather than assuming the feature is available everywhere.

For continuous music, try YouTube Music
If your goal is a continuing music selection rather than a chain of unrelated videos, YouTube Music offers radio stations and personalized mixes that can be played on shuffle. These are purpose-built music options, but they should not be treated as a guarantee of uninterrupted playback in every region, app version, or listening context. YouTube Music Product Manager Jason Robinson described the feature direction in a 4 October 2021 announcement with the phrase “Keep the music playing.”
What Premium Lite means in India
On 12 March 2026, Google announced a rollout of Background play and downloads for most videos to Premium Lite subscribers in India. Google distinguished music content and YouTube Music Premium as reasons to choose full Premium. The announcement is specific to India and says “most videos”; readers elsewhere should check their local plan details, and Indian users should confirm the feature is available for their account and content.

Common reasons playback stops
- The next video never starts: Check Autoplay on the device that stopped. If you want a specific sequence, use a playlist or queue instead of relying on recommendations.
- Audio stops when you leave the app or lock the screen: Check Background play eligibility and its setting. Autoplay controls what happens after a video ends, not whether the current audio can continue in the background.
- Background playback works only with a connected device: The setting may be conditional on headphones or external speakers. Choose Always on if that option is available to your eligible account and is what you want.
- Behavior differs on a TV, cast session, or another device: Check that device’s own controls. YouTube’s documented settings can differ by device, and the official material does not promise identical Autoplay behavior everywhere.
- You want music, but recommendations are unpredictable: Try a YouTube Music station or shuffled mix rather than an Autoplay chain of general videos.
- You are in India on Premium Lite: Google’s 12 March 2026 announcement describes a rollout for most videos, not every video or every account. Check current local availability and content eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
If by “continuous YouTube stream” you mean a 24/7 YouTube live stream made from uploaded recordings, that is different from keeping ordinary YouTube app playback moving between videos. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start the free first day.
