To restart a YouTube Live stream after FFmpeg exits, run FFmpeg under a host-level process supervisor configured to relaunch it. FFmpeg reconnect options can address certain connection interruptions while the process is still running; they cannot restart a process that has terminated. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings manage the stream in Live Control Room, not the FFmpeg process on your computer or server.

How the restart works

There are two separate layers to keep straight:

  • Process supervision: A service manager or wrapper watches FFmpeg and starts it again after it exits, according to the policy you configure.
  • Stream connection: FFmpeg sends its output to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. Protocol-level reconnect options may handle some connection errors, but they do not relaunch an exited process.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start streaming from it (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Its Auto-start and Auto-stop controls are stream settings in Live Control Room, not a host-side process supervisor (Manage live stream settings).

Prepare and verify the FFmpeg command

  1. Run your known-good command manually first. Confirm that the input is available, the command starts without errors, and the stream appears in Live Control Room. A supervisor can relaunch a command, but it cannot correct a bad command, missing input, incorrect key, exhausted disk, or continuing network problem.
  2. Check the encoder configuration. Use the YouTube server URL and stream key shown for the stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
  3. Note how FFmpeg exits. Capture its output or service logs so you can distinguish a transient failure from a configuration or input problem before setting an aggressive restart policy.

If FFmpeg reports a stream-key startup error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to retrieve a stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).

Configure a host-level supervisor

Choose a service manager or process supervisor appropriate to your operating system, deployment, and installed FFmpeg version. Configure it to start the FFmpeg command and to relaunch it after an unexpected exit. Exact configuration differs between supervisors; there is no single unit file, shell loop, container policy, or Windows service setup established here as a universal solution.

  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.

When choosing or configuring a supervisor, check:

  • Whether it restarts after a nonzero exit only, or after any exit—including a clean one.
  • Whether it supports a restart delay and limits rapid repeated restarts.
  • How it supplies the working directory, environment variables, and any required credentials.
  • Where standard output, errors, and restart events are logged.
  • Whether it starts only after required network, storage, or input services are ready.

Use a measured delay and a restart-rate limit where your supervisor supports them. These are operational safeguards: they reduce rapid restart loops but do not fix the cause of an exit. Review the logs and correct persistent failures instead of allowing repeated retries to conceal them.

Test recovery end to end

  1. Start the supervised FFmpeg job and confirm the encoder feed appears in Live Control Room.
  2. Deliberately terminate the FFmpeg process during a controlled test.
  3. Check the supervisor’s logs or status to confirm that it noticed the exit and launched FFmpeg again.
  4. Confirm that FFmpeg is running and that the feed has returned in Live Control Room. Preview the stream and verify viewer access.
  5. If it does not recover, inspect the FFmpeg and supervisor logs, check that the input remains available, and verify the server URL and stream key before testing again.

YouTube recommends testing encoders, monitoring stream health, and testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting the network (YouTube live streaming tips). Its streaming tips also advise allowing upload-bandwidth headroom and note that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (Streaming tips).

What FFmpeg reconnect options can—and cannot—do

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options include reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and delay or retry controls. Their documented scope concerns HTTP input reconnection in specified cases, such as disconnection, end-of-file, or network errors. They are not a substitute for a supervisor watching an output process that has ended. Consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build: the cited option descriptions are from the project’s current HTTP protocol source, and option availability or semantics can vary by version.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

  • FFmpeg exits repeatedly: Read its error output and the supervisor log. Check the command, input availability, storage, network, and stream key; a restart policy cannot repair a persistent fault.
  • The supervisor reports a restart, but no feed returns: Confirm that it launched the intended command with the required working directory and environment, then check FFmpeg’s output and Live Control Room status.
  • YouTube reports a stream-key error: Retrieve the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration, as described in YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
  • The stream drops during a network interruption: Check upload capacity and stability, then test recovery deliberately. A host supervisor can restart FFmpeg after it exits, but cannot restore a persistently unavailable network.
  • Restarts happen too quickly or indefinitely: Add an appropriate delay or restart-rate limit in the supervisor and investigate the underlying error rather than masking it with rapid retries.
