Yes, a Raspberry Pi can send a podcast stream to YouTube Live, but the available evidence does not prove that a particular current Pi model will run a 24/7 broadcast reliably without interruption. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives you the settings to target; the practical test is whether your Pi, encoder software, audio/video workload and internet connection can sustain them and recover from failures.

What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—guarantee

A Pi can act as the encoder host: it sends audio and video to YouTube using a server address and stream key. Raspberry Pi’s official site demonstrated a Pi Zero and FFmpeg-based setup in a tutorial published on 30 May 2017, showing that the general approach is possible. That historical example is not a current-board endurance test, nor does it establish 24/7 reliability for your particular setup. Raspberry Pi’s tutorial

For a podcast with static artwork, the workload may be simpler than a camera-heavy production, but that does not remove the need to test encoding, sustained upload, power, cooling, software restarts and network recovery. The cited official guidance does not certify a specific Pi model or restart configuration for continuous use.

Choose settings YouTube supports

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For a straightforward Pi setup, H.264 is a practical supported choice, provided the encoder stack you select can produce it reliably. Use constant bitrate encoding and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Video bitrate starting points

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measurements of what a Raspberry Pi can encode. A static-artwork podcast may not need as much visual data as high-motion video, but begin with YouTube’s guidance and test the actual result.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Audio

For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz audio sampling and a 128 Kbps audio bitrate, using AAC or MP3 with RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm that the source and encoder agree on the audio format, sample rate and channel layout; mismatches can produce silence, distortion or an unexpected stream format. YouTube encoder guidance

Set up the YouTube connection

  1. Enable live streaming. If this is the first time the channel is using YouTube Live, activation can take up to 24 hours. Do this well before the planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming workflow
  2. Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and retrieve the server URL and stream key. The exact controls shown can vary with YouTube’s interface.
  3. Configure the Pi’s encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in your chosen encoder, select RTMPS where available, and apply a supported codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings.
  4. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it, include it in public scripts or screenshots, or leave it in a file that other users can read.
  5. Start a private or otherwise low-risk test. Check picture, audio, sync and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for an audience.

Test for continuous operation and recovery

YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and movement, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. For an always-on show, go further: run the intended program for an extended period under the real room and network conditions, then deliberately verify what happens after an encoder restart and a network interruption. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream

  • Use the actual artwork, audio chain, overlays and output settings planned for the show.
  • Measure sustained upload performance, not just a single speed-test peak. Leave headroom for ordinary network variation and other household or office traffic.
  • Use a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart the encoder after a crash, and make a separate plan for reconnecting after network loss. These are implementation recommendations, not configurations certified by the cited Pi tutorial.
  • Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and listen for dropouts or audio problems at the receiving end.
  • Check power, ventilation and storage over the duration you intend to operate. A successful short test does not establish long-term reliability.

Plan for a complete archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be preserved in full. If the complete program matters, record a separate local copy or schedule deliberate stream breaks, and verify the resulting archive behavior for your channel. Common problems and what to check

YouTube does not receive a signal

  • Confirm live streaming is enabled; first-time activation may still be pending.
  • Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, and that the key belongs to the stream you intend to use.
  • Verify that the Pi can reach the internet and that the encoder is actually running.

Stream health reports connection or bitrate trouble

  • Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected video bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead. Reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the target.
  • Check whether other devices or transfers are consuming upload bandwidth; test over the same connection and at the times the stream will normally run.
  • Confirm constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding YouTube’s four-second maximum.

Video works but audio is missing or wrong

  • Check the encoder’s selected input and confirm the microphone, interface or prerecorded audio source is active.
  • Verify that the stream uses AAC or MP3 and that stereo audio is configured at YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
  • Listen to the test on YouTube itself, not only through local monitoring.

The stream stops after a crash or network drop

  • Check encoder and system logs to distinguish a software crash, power issue and internet interruption.
  • Verify that the configured supervisor restarts the process after a crash, and test whether the encoder reconnects after the network returns.
  • Monitor a longer run before treating the setup as dependable; the historical Pi example does not demonstrate current 24/7 recovery performance.

The stream is live but the full recording is missing

Check the broadcast duration: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer programs, use a separate recording or an intentional break plan rather than relying on a complete automatic archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of prerecorded podcast episodes or a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not broadcast from a live camera.
