If the church’s only internet connection goes down, its local encoder cannot send new video to YouTube until connectivity returns. To keep a live camera or encoder feed reaching YouTube through an ISP outage, the church needs a genuinely independent backup internet path. An Ethernet cable can reduce local Wi-Fi problems, but it cannot replace a failed internet service.
First, identify which connection has failed
A YouTube stream depends on a chain: the encoder, the church’s local network, the modem or router, the internet service, and YouTube’s ingest service. A break at any point can interrupt delivery. Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room, then test the church’s outbound internet connection to narrow down where the fault lies.
- Encoder problem: Confirm the streaming computer and encoder are still running and that the encoder reports a connection to YouTube.
- Local network problem: Check the Ethernet cable, router, modem, switches, and any extenders between the computer and the router.
- Internet-service problem: If the local network is working but outbound connectivity is not, contact the ISP or switch to a separate backup connection if one is available.
- YouTube ingest or stream-health problem: Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s status before changing settings. A disconnected encoder and an unhealthy stream are clues to investigate, not proof of a particular cause.
Reduce avoidable connection failures
Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet
Use a wired connection from the streaming computer to the router rather than relying on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A suitable Cat6 Ethernet cable is a straightforward option if the computer and router have compatible ports. This improves the local link only; it does not protect against a router, power, ISP, or wider internet outage.
Watch dropped frames and connection status
In OBS, monitor its connection status and dropped-frame indicator while streaming. OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If the connection is congested, OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the bitrate to reduce dropped frames, but the trade-off is lower video quality. It does not repair faulty equipment or restore an unavailable internet service.

There is no universal church-specific bitrate or upload-speed target established here. The usable capacity depends on the church’s connection and the encoder’s chosen settings; do not treat a bitrate reduction as a guaranteed fix for an outage.
Plan a backup internet path for an ISP outage
If video must continue reaching YouTube while the primary ISP is unavailable, arrange a second internet path that does not depend on the same failed service. A second connection is only meaningfully independent if it avoids relevant shared points of failure—such as the same ISP, modem, power supply, or physical route. Whether a cellular connection or another service is suitable depends on coverage and upload capacity at the church’s location.

When comparing backup designs, consider:
- Failure independence: What equipment, provider, power, or physical route is shared with the primary connection?
- Switching time: How long will it take the backup to take over, and what interruption will viewers see?
- Capacity at the building: Can the backup connection carry the stream reliably from the church’s actual location?
- Cost and operation: What recurring cost, equipment, and operator steps are involved?
A dual-WAN router may be part of a failover design, but the router alone is not a second internet service. Compatibility and switching behavior depend on the specific equipment and connections; confirm these locally rather than assuming any particular model or provider will work.
Do not confuse YouTube’s backup server URL with backup internet
YouTube documents a Backup server URL for supported HLS ingestion workflows. It provides an alternate ingest destination; it does not provide a second ISP or carry video when the church has lost internet access. HLS also requires compatible encoder settings and has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Do not assume that configuring the URL will preserve a viewer’s session through an outage.

Make recovery part of the service plan
- Before the service: Confirm the encoder is running, the stream is connected, and YouTube Live Control Room shows the expected stream health.
- Assign an operator: Have someone monitor the encoder and YouTube status rather than leaving the equipment unattended.
- If the stream drops: Check encoder status, local equipment and cabling, then outbound internet connectivity. Restore the primary connection or switch to the separately provisioned backup path, if available.
- After reconnection: Confirm the encoder has reconnected and YouTube is receiving the stream again. Follow the church’s own communication plan if viewers experienced an interruption.
- Rehearse in advance: Practice who checks the equipment, who contacts the ISP, and who switches the connection. A rehearsal helps the team know its steps; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted delivery.
Troubleshooting common interruptions
