To change the quality of a 24/7 YouTube stream, adjust the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then test the new settings before relying on them. YouTube detects the incoming settings and transcodes the feed into formats for viewers; changing the quality option in a viewer’s player does not change the broadcast.
Change the encoder’s output settings
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio’s Go Live area and select the relevant stream in Live Control Room. Check whether the encoder uses automatic resolution detection or a custom stream key configured for manual resolution selection.
- Set the encoder’s resolution and frame rate. Choose a mode appropriate to the source video and its motion. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate and a more capable, stable upload connection.
- Choose a bitrate for the codec and mode. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits every setup. For example, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps with AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps with H.264; for 1080p at 30 fps, it recommends 10 Mbps with AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps with H.264; for 1080p at 60 fps, 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps with H.264. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not guarantees. Consult the full encoder settings and bitrate table for other modes and minimums.
- Check the rest of the encoder configuration. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Confirm your encoder and service support the settings you select.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% room. Count both primary and backup streams if they transmit at the same time. A higher encoder bitrate will not improve the result reliably if your connection cannot sustain it.
- Test before changing a live continuous stream. Send audio and motion similar to the real program, preview it in Live Control Room, and check stream health and audio/video quality. If you use failover, verify that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. YouTube’s documentation does not promise that every encoder or cloud service can apply a quality change in-place without interruption. Check the provider’s instructions and test on an unlisted/test stream or during a planned transition.
For a 24/7 operation, monitor encoder warnings, dropped frames, upload instability, and viewer reports after the change. If the encoder or service requires a restart, schedule a controlled transition and follow its documented failover procedure. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing, bandwidth, monitoring, and failover.
Broadcaster quality is not viewer playback quality
The broadcaster sets the incoming feed’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder. YouTube says it automatically transcodes the live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. A viewer’s quality menu selects playback quality; it does not alter the encoder’s source feed. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Latency is a separate stream setting, although it affects viewing behavior: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. Review live stream settings before changing latency in an effort to solve a picture-quality problem.

HDR and other special cases
If the source is HDR, YouTube currently requires H.265/HEVC for HDR live streaming. HDR playback depends on the viewer’s device; devices that do not support HDR receive SDR playback. YouTube also notes that Live Control Room’s preview will not display HDR colors. Follow the platform’s HDR streaming setup rather than treating HDR as an ordinary resolution change.
YouTube’s encoder setup page names Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. That is an example, not a requirement: it does not mean every continuous stream uses Gyre or that a particular service supports changing quality without interruption. YouTube also describes software and standalone hardware encoders without prescribing one model; a camera, capture card, or dedicated encoder is not universally required to adjust stream quality. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
