To turn podcast video files into a YouTube live stream, play them through an encoder such as OBS Studio and send that encoder’s feed to a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the event, copy its stream URL and key into OBS, start the feed, check the preview, then select Go live. For a recurring playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can play several files and loop them.

Choose the right format for your archive

There are three practical approaches, depending on whether you want a one-off event, repeat programming, or an automated workflow:

Approach Best fit Trade-offs
One video per scheduled live event A curated episode with its own title, promotion, and watch page You create and schedule each event separately. YouTube’s archive guidance favors keeping a stream under 12 hours if you want an automatic replay.
Playlist in an encoder feed A sequence of episodes or recurring programming from local files The encoder computer and files must remain available. Long-running streams have an archive-duration caveat.
YouTube API-managed broadcasts and streams Developers automating recurring events or managing broadcast resources Requires more technical setup: create and bind broadcast and stream resources, then manage their statuses.

For most podcasters, the YouTube Studio and OBS workflow below is the simplest starting point. The files are played by encoder software; the original YouTube uploads do not themselves become live broadcasts.

Check rights before rebroadcasting episodes

Before putting an old episode on a live feed, check that you have the rights for this new use. Review music, clips, guest contributions, stock media, and any other licensed material in both the video and audio. A prior upload to YouTube is not automatic permission to rebroadcast the material live. YouTube provides rights-management controls for live content and advises creators to ensure their audio and video do not infringe others’ rights: YouTube Help: Copyright on YouTube.

Prepare the videos and OBS

For a single episode

  1. Gather the finished video file you want to play and confirm it opens and plays correctly on the computer that will run OBS.
  2. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file.
  3. Check the scene’s picture and audio before connecting it to YouTube. Use a short test if you need to confirm levels or framing.

For a playlist or loop

  1. Install VLC on the computer. OBS requires VLC to make its VLC Video source available.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and load the files in the order you want them played.
  3. Set the playlist’s loop option if the sequence should repeat. OBS also documents shuffle controls for this source; choose the playback order that suits your program.
  4. Preview the sequence in OBS and check episode order, sound, and the transition between files before sending the feed live.

OBS documents these source types and playlist controls in its media sources guide. The exact playback result depends on your files and setup; do not assume a playlist will be gapless or run unattended indefinitely.

Create the YouTube live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live.
  2. Choose the Stream tab for a straightforward stream, or use Manage → Schedule Stream to set up a future event. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers creating a stream in Live Control Room: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
  3. Enter a clear title and description, set visibility, and add a thumbnail as appropriate. For a scheduled stream, the upcoming event can be visible to viewers, who may request a start notification: YouTube Help: Schedule a live stream.
  4. Find the stream URL and stream key in the event’s stream settings. Keep the key private: it identifies where your encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it.

Connect OBS, preview, and go live

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube as the service, or configure the server and key manually if needed.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the matching OBS fields. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room preview.
  4. Check the picture, audio, episode order, and first transition in the preview. When everything is correct, select Go live in YouTube Studio.
  5. Monitor the event as it runs. To end it, stop the broadcast in YouTube Studio and stop the feed in OBS.

YouTube treats a broadcast event and the stream carrying its audio and video as distinct resources. Reusable streams can support recurring events; YouTube also documents a 24/7 feed scenario for API users. That API route is optional for ordinary creators, and it does not remove the need to manage the encoder and source files.

Plan for replay and keep a backup

YouTube’s archive guidance says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete YouTube replay matters, schedule a shorter event and keep a separate local recording as a backup. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

An external SSD is one optional way to keep a separate copy of the video archive or recording. YouTube recommends a local recording backup but does not prescribe a particular drive type, capacity, or brand.

Choose settings without guessing

There is no universally correct resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or computer specification for every podcast archive. The right settings depend on the source files, computer, connection, and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Start with a profile appropriate to your source and available upload connection, then use YouTube’s preview and status indicators to catch problems before going live. Avoid upscaling a lower-resolution archive just to select a higher output setting.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • OBS does not show VLC Video: Install VLC, then restart OBS so it can detect the VLC installation.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Verify the selected event, server URL, and stream key. A key from another event or a mistyped value can prevent the encoder from connecting. Keep the key private.
  • The preview is black or the wrong episode plays: Check that the selected source points to an accessible file, that the correct scene is active, and that the playlist order is right.
  • There is no audio or the level is wrong: Check the media source and OBS audio mixer, then confirm audio in the YouTube preview before going live.
  • The stream stops when unattended: A desktop encoder depends on the computer, power, internet connection, and local files remaining available. The documented OBS playlist controls do not establish automatic recovery or guaranteed unattended uptime.
  • The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep the event shorter when an automatic archive matters, and make a separate local recording.
