Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Change the playlist in the encoder or cloud playout service that is generating your live feed—not in YouTube Studio. YouTube receives the encoded video; whether a playlist edit appears without interrupting the stream depends on the software or service playing it.
Where to change the playlist
Find the system that selects and plays the media. With a local setup, that may be OBS or another encoder and its media source or playlist. With cloud playout, it is the service managing your broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and key to receive the outgoing feed; playlist selection happens upstream of that connection.
YouTube’s official encoder instructions cover sending and ending a stream, not a general control for changing the media playlist inside an active feed. There is no universal YouTube Studio playlist-edit button in that workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup and stream-ending instructions and YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
How to update it safely
- Identify the playout system. Determine whether a computer running OBS or another encoder is playing the files, or a cloud service is generating the feed. Edit the playlist where playback is controlled.
- Check that system’s live-edit instructions. Some providers support edits while a stream is running, but the controls and when a change takes effect vary. For example, Gyre says its playlist can be changed on a running stream. Upstream’s help documentation describes adding or removing files, reordering them, or playing a file on demand while live, then publishing the changes. Confirm the current interface and that your plan supports the behavior you need.
- Do not assume a local playlist reloads when saved. Editing a playlist file or VLC source may not make a running encoder reload it. An OBS forum post from 2023 reports inconsistent VLC results: a change appeared to take effect once, while another required restarting OBS and YouTube. That is an individual user report, not a guaranteed OBS workflow. See the OBS forum discussion.
- Check both ends. Confirm the current item or playlist status in your playout system, then inspect YouTube’s live preview or watch page. YouTube recommends previewing and continuously monitoring the stream; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- If a restart is required, plan for the interruption. Test the procedure before relying on it in production. YouTube’s guidance says to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube; it does not promise that a playlist change can be made without interruption. Avoid restarting a live encoder until you know how your setup behaves.
What to expect from each kind of setup
| Setup | Where you edit | Live change behavior | Interruption risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local encoder or media source | In the encoder or media-source playlist on the computer sending the stream. | Depends on the encoder and source. Saving a playlist file does not guarantee that active playback reloads it; the available OBS/VLC report is anecdotal and inconsistent. | A reload or encoder restart may be needed. Test the exact workflow; a restart can interrupt the feed. |
| Cloud playout service | In the service that manages the live playlist. | Vendor-specific. Gyre and Upstream document live-edit capabilities, but their instructions do not establish identical behavior across services. | Check the service’s instructions for when changes publish and whether playback continues during the edit. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your current setup cannot reliably update its playlist live, StreamNeo is a YouTube cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. StreamNeo offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives each account one free day with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
