First determine what is restarting: the YouTube broadcast may be going offline and returning, or the broadcast may stay live while the same prerecorded clip starts over. These are different problems. If the broadcast ends, check the encoder connection and YouTube Live settings; if only the clip repeats, check the playlist or playout controls in the software or service feeding the stream.
Identify what is restarting
YouTube separates a live broadcast—the event or watch page—from the stream, the incoming audio and video feed. That distinction helps narrow down the symptom, but it cannot identify the cause in an unknown setup. Watch the stream status and the viewer-facing page when the problem happens.
- The broadcast goes offline and returns: investigate whether the encoder stops sending video, loses its connection, or triggers a broadcast end.
- The broadcast remains live, but the clip begins again: investigate the playlist, repeat setting, or playout behavior in the software or hosted service sending video to YouTube.
- A viewer’s playback jumps or resumes unexpectedly: check whether DVR controls are involved. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind, then continue from where they paused; this is not the encoder restarting.
YouTube’s Live API documentation distinguishes the broadcast from the incoming stream and describes a channel with a continuous feed alongside a separate broadcast: YouTube Live API documentation.
If the broadcast goes offline and returns
Check the encoder’s connection and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect the stream status around the time the broadcast drops.
- In your encoder, confirm that the Live server URL and current stream key match the ones shown for the intended YouTube stream. YouTube describes the key as the password and address for the stream; keep it private. If you reset it, update the encoder with the new key.
- Check the encoder’s own status or logs for a dropped connection, stopped output, or error. The YouTube setup instructions explain that an encoder converts video for streaming and can be software or standalone hardware: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
A correct key and server address are necessary connection details, but they do not prove that either caused a particular interruption.

Review auto-start and auto-stop
In the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room, check whether auto-start or auto-stop is enabled and whether those choices are being reused from saved stream settings. With auto-start enabled, YouTube can start the broadcast when video begins arriving on its bound stream. With auto-stop enabled, the broadcast ends about a minute after video transmission stops. These settings explain how an interruption can affect the broadcast; they are not a universal fix for every restart.
For the available controls, see Manage live stream settings. YouTube’s lifecycle guide describes how auto-start and auto-stop relate to incoming video: YouTube Live API broadcast lifecycle.

Resolve an encoder-start error
If YouTube reports an encoder-start error, copy the current stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises users who sign in to third-party streaming software rather than using a stream key to contact that software’s support: Troubleshoot live stream errors.
If only the video content starts over
When the live indicator remains on and the same prerecorded video begins again, inspect the system that selects and plays the content—not just YouTube’s ingest settings.

- Check whether repeat, loop, or playlist-repeat is enabled in the encoder or playout software.
- Check whether the playlist has reached its end and is configured to start again, or whether the service intentionally restarts a single uploaded video.
- Review the playout schedule and logs at the transition point to see whether the software stopped, reloaded, or moved to the next item.
- If you use a hosted service, check its own playlist and repeat controls or ask its support team how the configured channel behaves.
YouTube’s encoder and Live Control Room documentation covers the incoming feed and broadcast configuration, not the repeat controls of every third-party player. There is no universal YouTube setting that stops an external playout system from looping its source video.
Do not treat the 12-hour archive note as a restart rule
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving statement, not evidence that every broadcast restarts when it reaches 12 hours. The encoder setup page does not establish that crossing 12 hours forces a stream to stop or restart: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Some providers publish their own operating recommendations for their own services. For example, Livestream’s guidance about periodic restarts is vendor-specific and is not a general YouTube requirement or a universal interval: Livestream’s 24/7 stream guidance.

- Keep your current encoder: sensible when it already supports the needed playlist behavior and can provide status or logs to diagnose interruptions.
- Consider dedicated hardware: relevant if you need a physical encoder for your inputs or production setup. Buying hardware alone will not fix a repeat setting in the playout software.
- Consider hosted playout: relevant if you want uploaded videos looped from a cloud service rather than relying on a computer at home. Verify the provider’s controls, recovery behavior, terms, and suitability for your channel before switching.
Or let it run in the cloud
