To switch prerecorded videos automatically during a 24/7 YouTube live stream, use a playout system to schedule and transition between files, then use an encoder to send the continuous output to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the stream; it does not, by itself, choose the next video from your files. The switching controls depend on the playout software or hosted service you choose.
How automatic video switching works
Think of the setup as two jobs:
- Playout: selects videos, sets their order or schedule, and transitions from one file to the next.
- Encoding and delivery: sends the resulting continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
The playout system might run locally or in a hosted service. A standalone hardware encoder can handle the ingest leg, but YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish that any particular hardware model can select or switch video files. Confirm that capability in the model’s documentation, and check whether it still needs a separate playout computer or service.
Choose where the switching will happen
Local playout plus an encoder
A local playout application or dedicated system handles the playlist and transitions, while an encoder sends its output to YouTube. This gives you control over where files are stored and how the schedule is built, but the equipment and connection involved in playout must remain available for the stream to continue. Verify that your chosen software supports unattended playback, the transitions you need, and recovery after a restart or interruption.
A hosted prerecorded-video service
A hosted service runs the playout outside your home or office. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. Treat that directory listing as a starting point, not a substitute for checking the service’s current documentation for playlist controls, scheduling, recovery, monitoring, and pricing.

Hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is a physical way to send a feed to YouTube, not automatically a video library or playlist scheduler. Before choosing one, confirm support for your input sources, continuous unattended operation, remote monitoring and restart, and redundancy. If you need automatic file switching, establish which separate playout component performs it.
Set up a continuous stream
- Choose and configure the playout system. Add the prerecorded files, arrange their order or schedule, and set transitions using the controls documented for that specific application or service. There is no universal YouTube button for switching among local video files.
- Enable live streaming on your channel. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s corresponding fields. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s address and password; treat it like a credential and do not share it publicly.
- Run a test feed. Start the playout and encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check video, audio, and stream quality. Confirm that viewers can reach the stream from your channel and watch pages, including on a mobile device.
- Test interruption handling. If you have a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work. Also check what the playout system does after a file ends, a machine restarts, or the connection drops.
- Keep your own archive if you need a recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 stream, keep a local archive backup rather than relying on YouTube to preserve the complete broadcast.
Settings and checks that affect reliability
Use the stream URL and key associated with the selected Live Control Room stream, and confirm the encoder is sending the intended output. The right video settings depend on your source, encoder, and network; use the encoder’s documented recommendations rather than assuming a universal bitrate or resolution. Check that audio is present and that the preview remains stable during a video change.

- Confirm that playlist behavior at the end of the last file matches your intended schedule, such as looping or advancing to the next scheduled item.
- Check audio continuity and picture transitions at file boundaries; clips can have different formats, levels, or durations.
- Monitor stream quality during the test and after launch, not just whether the encoder reports that it is connected.
- Verify restart and recovery behavior for the playout system and encoder, and test backup failover if you rely on it.
- Review copyright and permissions for every video and audio track before broadcasting. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if its content violates YouTube policies or rights requirements.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The next video does not start | The playlist, end-of-file action, or schedule is not configured as intended. | Check the playout system’s playlist and transition settings, and test the sequence through the end of a file. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The encoder is not sending, or its stream URL or key does not match the selected Live Control Room stream. | Verify the encoder connection fields and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Keep the stream key private. |
| The stream is connected but picture or sound is wrong | The source, encoder output, or media files may not match the intended output. | Check the preview, audio presence, and stream quality; test each file boundary and consult the encoder’s guidance for supported settings. |
| The stream stops after an outage or restart | The playout or encoder may not restart automatically, or failover may not be configured. | Test unattended restart and backup-encoder failover in advance; verify which component is responsible for recovery. |
| A complete 24/7 recording is missing | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. | Maintain a local archive if you need a full recording. |
